Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams hit a home run with Game of Shadows. It was expertly researched and, as they reveal in the afterword of this edition, led the Federal government to investigate them because of the access they were able to obtain to materials.
It's not just their ability to research BALCO and the steroid era in baseball, they went above and beyond to personalize each character while still treating them fairly. These are real people, not fictional characters. Sometimes we are outraged by them. Other times we empathize with them. Nobody portrayed in this volume is a saint, but even the worst sinners have some redeeming qualities.
It definitely should have won a Pulitzer.
