I really, really made an earnest attempt to read this book.

However, despite my best efforts, I simply could not manage to get beyond the first 100 pages.

The story seemed to lack the engaging elements that would have hooked me and compelled me to continue.

Maybe it was the writing style that didn't resonate with me, or perhaps the plot failed to capture my interest.

Whatever the reason, I found myself constantly losing focus and having to force myself to keep reading.

Eventually, I had to admit defeat and put the book aside.

It was a disappointment, as I had been looking forward to delving into its pages and experiencing the story it had to offer.

But sometimes, no matter how hard we try, certain books just aren't meant for us.

Magical realism is always among my favourites.

It is a genre that combines the ordinary with the extraordinary, creating a world that is both familiar and strange.

A beautiful story which made me swept away is Gabriel García Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude".

In this novel, Márquez weaves a tale of seven generations of the Buendía family, set in the fictional town of Macondo.

The story is filled with magical elements such as flying carpets, telepathy, and a woman who ascends to heaven while doing the laundry.

Despite these fantastical elements, the novel also explores themes such as love, loss, war, and the cyclical nature of history.

Magical realism allows us to see the world in a new light, to question the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.

It is a genre that invites us to suspend our disbelief and enter a world where anything is possible.

This was good, but at the end I thought: "What is the point?"

This experience started off well. There were moments that were truly enjoyable and engaging. However, as it came to a close, a sense of confusion began to creep in. I found myself wondering what the ultimate purpose or significance of it all was.

Maybe it was supposed to teach me something, but that lesson wasn't immediately clear. Or perhaps it was just a random occurrence that didn't have a specific point.

Regardless, this thought lingered in my mind, making me question the value of the experience. It made me realize that sometimes, even when things seem good on the surface, we need to look deeper to understand their true meaning.

In the end, I'm left with this unanswered question, and it makes me more aware of the importance of reflecting on our experiences and trying to find the point in everything we do.

I always have a hard time evaluating or reviewing books in translation, especially for books whose original language I’m not familiar with.

It's like trying to understand a complex puzzle with some pieces missing. I wish I knew more about Israeli and Jewish culture (my current knowledge is anecdotal at best), because I feel that would have enriched my understanding of the relationships presented in the novel.

The tale Horn told seems to be indicative of generations of mother-daughter relationships, perhaps more so in the Mediterranean/middle east than in more western cultural milieus. Even then, these relationships can transcend cultural borders.

From my own reading, it was clear that it was Horn’s first novel. Sara’s story was the most developed, but I wish we could have heard her story in her own voice, rather than having it narrated as though it was a discovery. I also would have appreciated Amal’s story being developed further, but there’s only so much one can do when discussing 5 generations of women in just barely over 250 pages.

I am curious to read Horn’s later novels, to see how her voice has changed and matured with experience. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of her writing style and the themes she explores as she grows as a writer.

Although I truly adored another book by this author, namely "Ode to Joy", unfortunately, this particular one failed to resonate with me at all.

It is a narrative that revolves around five generations of women within a family residing in Jerusalem. Strangely enough, the women in this family seem to have been "cursed" in such a way that whenever they give birth to daughters, they lose their husbands in one manner or another.

For me, as I delved deeper into the story, it gradually became rather tedious and uninteresting. I found myself struggling to maintain my engagement with the plot and the characters. Perhaps it was the repetitive nature of the curse and the way it was presented that made it feel somewhat monotonous.

Despite the author's evident talent, this book simply did not capture my imagination or hold my attention in the same way that "Ode to Joy" had. It serves as a reminder that even the most accomplished authors can have works that don't quite hit the mark for every reader.
