It is widely known that C S Lewis was a devout Christian. However, one should not approach this book with the expectation that Screwtape is a strawman. He is gloomy, painstaking, and as sharp as a blade. Nevertheless, as was noted in the preface, he is a liar, and even he doesn't believe everything he utters all the time, although he would persuade you otherwise. The most effective propaganda can even deceive the spokesmen themselves.
