Basically, this is a huge reference for all things related to Outlander - covering books 1 - 4, and also including a bit of information about the later books. The synopses of the books are really great as they help to refresh one's memory about what happened in each book. My favorite part was definitely the section written for ladies, lol - specifically about not actually sitting on the toilet seat. It was truly an outlandish part, but I found it hilarious and I completely agree! I also loved learning more about Ms. Gabaldon herself and seeing her interactions with her internet friends. I skimmed over some bits like the bibliography, the Gaelic translation and pronunciation guide. Since I listened to the audio and didn't read the books, I'm really grateful to Davina Porter as I don't have to worry about the pronunciation. The best parts for me were the sections when she talked about her writing process. It gave great insights. I also really like her snarky attitude and the fact that she freely admits she doesn't play well with others. Diana, you're speaking my language! It's a great reference to have or peruse (even though it's not cheap, even in the ebook version) for those who love the series and want to know everything.

Very much in DG's signature style, this wordy tome covers an extensive amount of information.
Since its intention is to serve as a reference guide, I must admit that I did not read all of it. I skipped multiple entire chapters that failed to pique my interest. However, it also didn't truly disclose a great deal that I wasn't already aware of.
I have the second volume of this on my bookshelf, also borrowed from the library, and I'm really undecided as to whether I'll even bother.
It's worth noting that I read the 2015 re-release edition, which incorporated some updates encompassing the TV series and the later books (which now have proper names, unlike when the original version was released).
It's quite entertaining to see the introduction of the discussion boards under the assumption that people were unfamiliar with how they functioned at that time.

I have a deep love for the Outlander series. However, I read the first few books in the series many years ago. As a result, when the TV series came out, I really needed a recap to refresh my memory. Fortunately, I found this book, which provided me with much more than just a simple recap.

It not only reminded me of the important plot points and characters but also delved deeper into the story, offering new insights and perspectives. The author's writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making it a pleasure to read.

I was completely immersed in the world of Outlander once again, and I couldn't put the book down. Now, I'm eagerly waiting for volume 2 to be released. I'm sure it will be just as精彩 as the first volume and will continue to satisfy my love for this amazing series.

I highly recommend this book to all fans of the Outlander series, whether you're a long-time reader or a new viewer of the TV show. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to fully understand and appreciate the story.

It was truly great to receive a summary reminder of the first 4 Outlander books.

Personally, I generally have a preference for when the author herself narrates a story. This is because one gets to hear their true intention and the nuances that might otherwise be lost.

However, in this particular case, it was quite evident that there had been no proper editing done. There were skipped words and very obvious pauses, which really detracted from the overall listening experience.

The author is indeed a wonderful writer, as her books are highly engaging and captivating. But unfortunately, I did not care for her narration at all. It seems that perhaps she is more suited to the written word rather than the spoken one.

Hopefully, in future audiobook productions of her works, a professional narrator will be hired to do justice to her amazing stories.

This book was crafted as a "companion" to the captivating Outlander series. It is a treasure trove filled with a plethora of fun facts, intricate background details, and engaging stories about "the making of" the series penned by the talented Diana Gabaldon. It was written subsequent to "Drums of Autumn", which is the fourth book in the series. I patiently waited until I had devoured the first four books before delving into this one. And I would most definitely recommend doing the same, as there are numerous "spoilers" incorporated here, along with a concise "synopsis" of each of those books. The very fact that I would actually read this large, hefty hardback "reference" book from cover to cover perhaps speaks volumes.

Although I am a passionate fan of the series, I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm "obsessed". I simply have a deep love for the books. There is undoubtedly something truly special, something quite rare about the way readers form a connection with the characters. And I also sense that there is something unique and extraordinary about the author herself. Her "stories about the stories" are almost on par with the stories themselves. I have skimmed through a few other similar "companion" books, but discovered that they were more effectively utilized as a tool for reference - not something to cozy up with and read纯粹 for pleasure. This one, however, is different. While certain parts of this book were more fascinating to me than others, I found the entire thing to be highly readable and extremely enjoyable. This is something that will surely remain on my bookshelf as I continue to follow the enchanting story of Claire and Jamie Fraser.

I'm really kicking myself for not reading this sooner.

Until now, I have been using the companions as reference books, and they are truly wonderful for that purpose.

However, I didn't realize just how much I would love reading every single thing they contain from cover to cover.

If you are an Obsessenach like me, I highly recommend that you READ these.

It was simply delightful from the very first page.

I can't wait to dive into Volume 2 and continue this amazing reading journey.

The detailed information and engaging stories within these companions have completely captured my attention and made me appreciate them in a whole new way.

I'm sure that anyone who gives them a chance will have a similar experience and be hooked from the start.

So don't hesitate, pick up these companions and start reading today!

Writers Guide

I titled this piece as it is. If you have an interest in the art of writing, this can serve as a great starting point. I find it truly fascinating. Although I may never have the ability to pen a book myself, I have an intense love for reading them. Having said that, I did thoroughly enjoy delving into Ms. Gabandon's thought process. It was captivating to learn how she unearthed events that were historically accessible in order to remain true to them. Understanding the way she approached her research and incorporated historical facts into her work provided me with a newfound appreciation for the meticulousness required in writing historical fiction. It made me realize that every detail matters and that staying true to the historical context is crucial in creating a believable and engaging story.

As a die-hard fan of the Outlander books and its TV series, I was eager to pick up The Outlandish Companion: The First Companion to the Outlander series, covering Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn.

I wanted to reminisce a bit while waiting for the new season and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. As my friends know, I discovered Outlander in March 2020. So, while I'm experiencing the widespread droughtlander, I'm aware there are far more serious cases than mine.

My Covid pandemic reading has included all of Diana Gabaldon's works, even the Lord John novellas. I've gone as far as reading travel guides to Scotland, buying the Outlander television soundtrack piano score (though I haven't played in 20 years), and learning about whisky tasting from Youtube videos.

However, I digress. I bought the Audible recording of the Companion, but I must admit, the audio sequence doesn't match the print book, making it cumbersome and confusing to sync (hence the 4 stars). Still, I enjoyed hearing Diana's voice, so I persevered.

The synopses of the novels are a great way to recall plot details and character interactions. But since it wasn't long since I first and last experienced all things Outlander, it wasn't as captivating for me. What was interesting was the Australian astrologer's chart readings for Jamie and Claire. The chapters on Diana's writing process were my favorite, learning how she develops ideas and plots.

I also loved the section on reader feedback regarding controversial topics. Diana Gabaldon is thorough in her research and guided by Jamie and the Rule of Three. Thankfully, her high principles have ensured the integrity of the story when it comes to the TV adaptation. The Companion ends with \\"Actors and Magic,\\" explaining the casting process and how lucky they were to get Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. We're all winners here!

In addition, the book features beautiful illustrations and concept art that bring the world of Outlander to life. Whether you're a die-hard fan or new to the series, this companion book is a must-have addition to your collection. It offers a unique and engaging way to explore the Outlander universe and discover new aspects of this beloved story.

The only downside to this book is the audio book version on Audible.

It is truly a pity that chunks of the book were missing from the audio. I had such a great desire to hear more of it read in someone else's voice.

Nevertheless, overall I have no complaints. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, along with all the details and intricacies of the first 4 'Outlander' books in the series.

The storylines and characters in these books are so engaging and captivating. They draw you in and keep you hooked from beginning to end.

Even though the audio version had its flaws, it didn't overshadow the overall enjoyment I got from reading/listening to these wonderful books.

I would highly recommend the 'Outlander' series to anyone who loves a good historical fiction with a touch of romance and adventure.

Update review for my 2016 audiobook listen, for the revised/updated 2015 edition of The Outlandish Companion, Volume I:

Basically, this is an absolute must-have for Outlander fans. It truly belongs on your bookshelf right next to the equally outstanding OCII. I took the time to write up a comprehensive reading and listening guide for this volume. You can easily view it here at Bookshelf Fantasies.

My review of the original edition of The Outlandish Companion (read approximately in 2012):

For fans of the Outlandish series, \\"The Outlandish Companion\\" is an essential item. Covering the first four books in the series, TOC serves as a wonderful reference to have by your side. As the cast of characters expands exponentially over the course of the series, TOC comes in extremely handy. It includes detailed synopses of the first four books, an alphabetical guide to all the characters, Gaelic phrases and a pronunciation key, sections on historical accuracy and background, and some very interesting responses to frequently asked questions. The prologue, in which Diana Gabaldon describes the genesis of Outlander, offers a fascinating insight into her writing process. All in all, it is well worth the money for anyone who has a deep love for this book series.

Don't judge.

Judgment is a natural human tendency, but it often leads to misunderstandings and unfairness. When we judge others, we are quick to form opinions based on limited information or our own biases.

This can prevent us from truly understanding and empathizing with them. Instead of judging, we should strive to be more open-minded and accepting.

We should take the time to listen to others' stories, understand their perspectives, and try to see the good in them. By doing so, we can build stronger relationships, foster greater kindness and compassion, and create a more harmonious world.

Remember, everyone has their own unique journey and challenges, and we should avoid passing judgment without first walking a mile in their shoes.

Let's choose to be more understanding and less judgmental, and make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
