UPDATE:

This book was even better the second time around! Perhaps it was because I knew what to anticipate, so I didn't feel as if I would die from an anxiety attack every other chapter. Instead, I could truly enjoy and feel all the minute details and emotions within this story.

REVIEW:

“I’m honest enough to say that I dinna care what the right and wrong of it may be, so long as you are here wi’ me, Claire,” he said softly. “If it was a sin for you to choose me…then I would go to the Devil himself and bless him for tempting ye to it.” - Jamie

I have a deep love for Jamie's playfulness, his temper, and his selflessness. I also adore Claire's wit and determination. Additionally, I am in awe of Mrs. Gabaldon's writing abilities and her complex storytelling skills. And I absolutely freaking adore this series! Do not make any excuses; you must read and experience this epic story for yourself!

James Fraser in all his glory:

“I stood still, vision blurring, and in that moment, I heard my heart break. It was a small, clean sound, like the snapping of a flower's stem.” - Claire

And here's just a little advice for my fellow readers:

I just finished this utterly brilliant book. It's truly a masterpiece that I have read several times throughout my life. Each time I pick it up, I find myself falling deeper in love with it. All the details seem to etch themselves even more firmly within my soul, and I welcome this with open arms. For me, Jamie and Claire are undoubtedly the best book couple ever. The lengths they go to for each other, the fierce fighting, and the sacrifices they make to save one another - it's simply无与伦比.

I only began writing reviews in the past two to three years, once I realized their significance for authors. So, here is finally my review for this perfect book. The story starts about twenty years after "Outlander." When I first read it, my friend mentioned the time gap towards the future, and I was like, okay. But I was shocked to discover just how many there were.

We meet Roger Wakefield, who is sorting through Reverend Wakefield's things after his passing. Claire and Brianna knock on his door, and Claire wants to know about the Jacobites. When he mentions the Fraser name, he notices the profound effect it has on Claire. It seems she knows far more than she is revealing. And when he finds an article stating that Claire returned pregnant, he wonders if she got pregnant from a Fraser descendant.

A few days later, they visit some sights in Scotland and end up in a graveyard. Roger and Brianna hit it off and develop feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Claire is wandering the grounds in search of herbs. When she sees Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall's grave, she is shocked and angry, yet also happy that he died on the day she predicted. But as she wanders further, she discovers the grave of James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser, her beloved husband. She screams and collapses. Brianna and Roger rush to her side, and that's when Claire confesses that Jamie is Brianna's real father and how much she wants to tell her about him, the love of her life, the very reason her heart beats.

Then part 2 begins, and we pick up with Jamie and Claire after "Outlander" in France, trying to prevent Bonnie Prince Charlie from going to war and save as many Scots as possible. I don't want to spoil too much of the story, but this is truly one of my all-time favorite series. Some people may complain that the books are too long and filled with excessive details, but I absolutely adore this aspect. I soak up every bit of it and immerse myself in the world of Jamie and Claire.

This book introduces new and colorful characters like Master Raymond. I love the friendship he shares with Claire, and I wish he were real so I could have met him. I also appreciate that Claire doesn't simply forget about Frank. At one point, she wakes up crying, and Jamie comforts her, allowing the memory to linger while passionately proclaiming that she is his and they are bound together. At another moment, he curses Frank for loving him because he desires to be the only one in her heart. He doesn't belittle Frank, but the love and bond she has with Jamie far exceed everything else. Their connection is eternal, and their souls can never be separated again.

I also love that Claire works in the hospital, still pursuing her passion even while pregnant. And who wouldn't want a loving dog like Buttons? My heart broke several times while reading this book. I appreciate that when certain events occur, they aren't brushed aside. There is pain, suffering, hatred, and confusion between them, but also the determination to find each other again and hope for a better future.

THIS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS HUGE SPOILERS. SKIP IT IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS. The last scene between them is heart-wrenching. When they realize they couldn't stop the war and that Jamie, his men, and the army will perish, he counts the days and tells Claire she is carrying a baby again. He begs her to go back through the stones and live for their child. At first, she refuses, saying she will die with him. But for the love of their child, she eventually relents and goes back. My heart shattered in those final moments, filled with pain and agony. And then they are back in the present with Roger and Brianna. Brianna hates her mom and doesn't believe her until the proof arrives. And when Roger discovers that Jamie didn't die after all, my heart nearly burst! I will read "Voyage" as soon as I can, even though I already know how it ends. I just need to immerse myself in it once more.

This book is sheer perfection. I love their love, the fact that it isn't always easy. I understand Brianna's reaction and adore Roger for believing in Claire so quickly. I love that a love like theirs is written down, transcending time and place. At times, I almost convince myself that this story is true because I love the characters so much. And I must admit, I love the books more than the TV show. I do enjoy the TV show as well, but I dislike how certain things that Jamie did in the book are now done by Claire in the show. For example, why change the fact that Jamie wanted to name the child Brian? Or why change his decision to use Claire for a few minutes to make William Grey think she was a prisoner instead of his wife? So, yes, the book will always reign supreme for me.

Diana Gabaldon, thank you for writing such an outstanding series. Thank you for showing us what true love really is - how powerful, consuming, and all-encompassing it can be. It's truly a work of art, and I give it a billion burning stars!

4.5 stars right off the top!

I got hooked on the Outlander series last year when I read the first book by Diana Gabaldon. I knew I wanted more, and now that I've devoured the second novel, Dragonfly in Amber, I've added the rest and even started watching the TV drama. I'm a major fan, especially since my blog followers chose this as my 'Book Bucket List' read for May 2018. I'm so glad they pushed me to take on this ~950-page behemoth. Now I'm planning to add the next one in June. It's amazing to think these were written nearly 30 years ago in the early 1990s.

Where do I begin? My normal review format won't do as I just want to gush about the book. There's time travel, a Scottish setting, and Jamie/Claire, but it's so much more. The relationships are brilliant, the plot is complex, and the historical facts and embellishments are phenomenal. It's like being absorbed into a life I wish I could live for a few hours, just like when I read Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Pillars of the Earth. I adore these giant tomes because of the author's ability to build realistic worlds with a touch of disbelief.

Gabaldon's attention to detail is strong. As a history buff, I love learning about new characters and seeing if they're based on real people. All the clans of Scotland shine through. I was especially pleased when they visited the Kilmarnock villages, as my ancestors lived there in the early 1800s before emigrating to America. I can't wait to visit the town and compare it to the novel. This is a true genealogy lover's book as it combines the analytical and historical aspects of discovering your past.

The only things that stopped me from giving this 5 stars are in two categories. Some sections are overly detailed, causing me to skim here and there. When that happens, the action and plot feel pushed aside. It happened once every 100 pages or so, not for more than a page or two. The other area is a bit different from Outlander. Gabaldon took a few too many "pun" liberties, covering bathing or bathroom habits too frequently. I like when it's brought up, but it was done in a too-humorous way, pulling me out of the book.

All in all, the plot is smart and charming. The introduction of a good side to a formerly bad character is interesting. The travel between France and Scotland is compelling. If you love fantasy and historical fiction and don't mind strong sexual content, give this a chance. I'll be in a book daze all week, so I'll have to choose something very different to snap me out of it.

Thanks to the voters of This Is My Truth Now for picking this book. A new poll will be set up today for June's Book Bucket List.

I DID IT. I finally finished this book! Miracles happen :P

So this book fell pretty much in the same spot as Outlander for me - I liked it but didn't love. The pacing of the books is a struggle for me. However, I have a great love for the characters and the overall story. It's truly captivating.

I really liked the addition of some new characters and locations. Although I didn't think the book delivered a super strong punch, it was still good enough to maintain my interest throughout. I'm not sure when I'll read Voyager. But I've heard that it's many people's favorite in the series. So, we shall see. Maybe it will exceed my expectations and become my favorite too. Only time will tell.

UPDATE: Video review here - http://youtu.be/iIZ5ICYLXuQ - (If you are scared about jumping into this one, I break down the beginning for you!)

I am truly at a loss for words. However, the very first words that spring to my mind are "HEART-WRENCHING" and "BEAUTIFUL". This book, although not quite as good as the first one, took me on an amazing journey. It has been a long time since I have felt such intense pain for the characters in a book. Despite the pain, I absolutely loved this installment of the series.

Here is a word of advice for you. Guard your heart closely as you read this book. Read it quickly, but also have the third book ready and waiting. You will need it to continue the story and find out what happens next. This series is one that you don't want to miss!

DNF at 34%.

Oh, the horror! The utter disappointment! Here we are, at 34% of the journey, and it's a DNF. How could this happen? It's like a cruel twist of fate. The words seem to dance around, taunting us with their wordiness. Cheesy phrases that make our eyes roll and our hearts groan. And the melodrama! It's enough to make one want to pull their hair out.

But perhaps there's a glimmer of hope. Maybe this is just a stumbling block on the path to something greater. Maybe we can learn from this and come back stronger. After all, every failure is an opportunity for growth. So, let's not despair. Let's pick ourselves up and keep going. Because who knows what lies ahead? Maybe the best is yet to come.

DNF at 34%, but the story isn't over.

Oh, wow! It's truly impossible for me to put into words the profound way I feel about this series.

I'm afraid that I'm becoming far too attached and accustomed to the characters. In fact, I don't really have a clue about what I'll do once the story reaches its end. Thank goodness I still have a long journey ahead before that happens

Grade: A or 4.5 stars

Wow! This was an absolute delight and so much better than Outlander, which I must now confess I found a bit dull at times. (Yes, I really said "boring"!)

The start of Dragonfly in Amber was a touch slow, but the story was constantly advancing. Jamie has matured since the last book. He no longer seems like a youthful lad. I adored Claire. The concerns I had about her portrayal were nonexistent in this volume. Her pain, anger, bitterness, hope, and love are all conveyed exquisitely.

Diana Gabaldon can be quite verbose, but it never became overwhelming. I didn't skim read at all, have vacant stares, or re-read pages. The writing was lush, creating a beautiful backdrop for Dragonfly in Amber. The secondary characters were just as captivating as Jamie and Claire. Additionally, the story has two points of view (Roger and Claire), which I really enjoyed. I'm hoping Jamie's point of view is added in Voyager.

The story is deeply emotional and evocative. Can history be changed? Should it be? How does one distinguish between right and wrong change? Claire and Jamie attempt to prevent the senseless slaughter of many Scotsmen and grapple with these questions. Their relationship has its ups and downs, but their deeply rooted love always shines through. I don't think this series is a perfect masterpiece, but I absolutely adored this book and am completely hooked!

Thanks, Jill and to all my GR friends for helping me discover this book! For those who are intimidated by the large size of the books, please try approaching this series by participating in a buddy read. That's how I got started, and perhaps it will work for you too.

A side note: Jack Randall is a truly fascinating character. His role in this story was brief when he appeared, but readers got to see a different side of him. His ability to compartmentalize his actions is intriguing. He's a gentleman, a loving brother, a sexual predator, and a fiend. Extremely complex!

I can't wait to see what happens next in this amazing series. I'm sure it will continue to captivate and surprise me.

Overall, Dragonfly in Amber is a must-read for fans of historical fiction and romance. It has everything you could want in a book: a great story, well-developed characters, and beautiful writing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read. You won't be disappointed!

Grandios! This is yet another masterpiece by Mrs. Gabaldon!

At first, I had my doubts whether Book 2 could excite me as much as Book 1. Indeed, the beginning of the story here was a bit confusing at first. And Scotland was greatly missed by me at the start, but then I was able to "befriend" quite well with the new scenery and the new opponents.

And I had to take a break more than once in the last hundred pages because I really had to cry. But the ending makes me strongly hope for Book 3!

This book takes the readers on a thrilling journey. The characters are vividly portrayed, and the plot is full of twists and turns. It keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Although the beginning might seem a bit challenging, once you get into the story, you will be completely hooked. The new settings and characters add a new dimension to the story, making it even more engaging.

The emotional depth of the story is also remarkable. It touches on themes such as love, loss, and sacrifice, which really tug at your heartstrings.

In conclusion, this is a must-read for fans of historical fiction. I can't wait to see what happens in Book 3!

5 Out of 5 Stars

This book truly stole my heart. I cannot emphasize enough that Diana Gabaldon is an incredibly amazing writer. She has this remarkable ability to make me completely invested in the story and skillfully plays with my emotions. Her plot twists are simply amazing and they continuously surprise me.

The beginning of the book was rather strange. It starts at a very peculiar point, so much so that I had to double-check if I was indeed reading the second book in the series. However, this unique start gives a different dimension to the story and makes you eager to find out what happened. She managed to keep me in the dark for almost 600 pages, and yet, I just couldn't stop reading.

Claire and Jamie are truly amazing characters, and their development throughout the story is captivating. They have now become one of my all-time favorite OTPs (One True Pairings). Fergus, too, has a special place in my heart. He's just a little rascal, but in the most endearing way.

I am really intrigued and interested in where this series is going to lead. I'm so glad that I decided to start this wonderful series! It has become a truly addictive and engaging read for me.
