After two books that have been carefully and gradually setting the stage, Final Rain presents a significant pay-off for a great deal of the tension that has been building up. This encompasses various elements such as the Soviet nukes, which add an element of extreme danger and uncertainty. Natalia's psychosis also plays a crucial role, adding a layer of psychological complexity and instability to the story. Additionally, the fact that the varying free factions are finally coming together is a major development that brings a new dynamic to the narrative.

While I do have the feeling that the events of the last three books (including this one) could potentially have been condensed into one or two novels without sacrificing too much of the essential plot and character development, I am still very happy to see that the series is now moving into interesting and uncharted territory once more. It gives the impression that there are many more exciting and unexpected twists and turns waiting for the readers as the story progresses.
