Chapter 5 (the first chapter in vol. 2) started on a happy note but soon turned gloomy. It became so sad after the truth about one state alchemist came out and very soon was followed by a final blow - it left a bitter taste in my mouth and a scar in my mind and I noticed the same feeling in Ed Elrich.
In this volume more powers of Lust and Gluttony surfaced. For Lust, it's the power to restore body parts and keep senescence in check. Gluttony can smell a person over a long distance.
One of the most complex characters introduced in this volume is Alex Louis Armstrong. Like his name he truly has strong arms and excellent fighting techniques - something for which he deserves respect. His narcissism over his muscular body is funny, while his sensitive mind soon makes him one of the most likable characters in the manga. But the crimes he committed in the past make it difficult to decide his moral values. So, as I said, he is a complex character.
As always the graphics are hilarious, expressions comical, and dialogues entertaining. I am totally in love with this manga series - no wonder it achieved such popularity. Though the anime based on it couldn't faithfully recreate those funny expressions (yeah, you guessed it - I am watching the anime side-by-side with each chapter), it nonetheless has a beauty and gravity of its own.
The situation with Scar wasn't solved in vol 2 and it seems it will go on for some time. Maybe he is intended to represent one of the main villains (or is it? It's not too much to expect from someone whose whole family and village were murdered by another group), let's see!
Overall I loved every part of this work by Hiromu (originally Hiromi) Arakawa and looking forward to reading her other books too, once I finish this series of course.
Without a doubt, it deserves a whopping 5 Stars from my side!
Umm... maybe I should wait a while before deciding on the ratings!
The hype is real. No pude evitarlo: me emocioné.
This took a huge turn and was just left wide-eyed because the actions by that one Alchemist that shall not be named was AWFUL! I was so angry and upset and really wrestled in that moment how I felt that Scar did the right thing as wrong as I feel it is for me to say that. *very nervous laughter*
This volume was INTENSE and I quickly understood why this series is so treasured in the manga community. The bond between Edward and Al is deeply heartmoving and we see that in fullness (at least so far since I've only read so little LOL). Definitely was thankful for the humor woven in to though!
I really love the introduction of some of the new characters and genuinely shocked how I am being pulled into this story because I did NOT want to stop reading this volume. I felt I read it fairly quick for a shonen read (which usually takes me longer to read compared to shojo manga) and just can't get over how amazing this series is. Like the hype is really real!
Sort of nervous as to what is going to happen next, but I'm pretty excited because this is probably the first time where I've even liked the villains! LOL! Looking forward to the next volume!
I take back what I said in my review of book one. ;)
I thought the first volume of "fullmetal alchemist" was pretty cheesy. Kinda cutesy & leaning more towards the lower end of the teenage audience range it's going for.
But this!
Volume two...
My god! This was anything BUT cheesy. This was so sad. And so epic. And funny. There was so much character development and world building. We were given so much reason to love Al & Ed, echo at first seem like goofballs, but are really so much deeper and rounder. We got some fucking awesome introductions to our antagonists.
I fucking love Edward. This sad tortured soul. :'( he loves his baby brother so much! & he's so sad & angry & lonely. & quiet obviously hates himself for not being able to save his mother & sticking his brother in that armor. But he's also so super badass. & hilarious. He's got this quirky snarky angry sense of humor that I just love so much.
& poor Al. :'( he just wants to be a normal kid again. :(
I'm fan girling so hard right now and it's only book 2.
The art is growing on me to. :) like, I think I'm starting to really love it.
it Is just a tad cartoonish & simple. And at first glance, that might seem like a bad or annoying thing. Especially for a gal who's use to more serious, more heavily detailed manga's like "black butler" (my personal favorite.)
but as I read more of "fullmetal alchemist" I see how well this slightly cartoonish style actually works in the story's favorite. Along with this sad backstory & this obviously seriousness surrounding the brothers to regain their bodies & the threat of Scar, we all these super funny bits thrown in for some excellent comic relief. Like poor Al riding in the sheep cart or Edward's hilarious angry expressions when he thinks someone is picking on him about his height.
Plus, these character designs are so clear & distinctive. & the facial expressions are actually really good, especially the angry ones Ed makes. I'm also deeply impressed by fight scenes. & the flashes of light & magic that show the use of alchemy. It's so perfect & pretty & bad ass all at once.
Does any of what I just wrote make sense? Cartoonish style, but also fucking brilliant?
If it doesn't, Oh well.
Basically I'm saying:
-cool powers -amazing characters - great world building -awesome storyline
This book (& the rest of the series I hope) is fucking amazing. I highly recommend this if you like the darker more fantasy type mantas with lots of action. If you've enjoyed "black butler", "pandora hearts" "inuyasha" or "attack on Titan" chances are you'll like "full teal alchemist"
Onward to more good reads! (Ha! See what I did there?)
“Riza: Without his Alchemy he's just... Jean: A little brat who swears a lot Maes: An arrogant pipsqueak Roy: Useless. Just useless Alphonse: Sorry big brother, I don't know how to add to that... Edward: *starts to cry* YOU'RE ALL PICKING ON ME!!!” HAHAHAHA I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE RIDICULE EDWARD CAUSE...WHY NOT?!
I loved this! Wasn't as thrilling as the first book of course but I like where the story's going! So the Fullmetal Alchemist A.K.A Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse Elric try to restore their bodies back and they need a philosopher's stone to do that. But acquiring it is not so easy with an alchemist killer on the loose who's trying to wipe out the alchemist population. Curse him!
I absolutely loved the sense of humor and it's very entertaining and didn't bore me even one bit!
