I can sum up this book in five words:

CURB YOUR FEARS (Pun intended)

Trust me, I've saved you a lot of time. I mean, if you really want to sit through it, then by all means, be my guest. This book aims to be funny, but unfortunately, it only manages to achieve mediocrity. It's not that there's necessarily anything horribly wrong with it. It just lacks that certain something that would make me feel compelled to recommend it to you. It doesn't stand out in any particular way. The humor falls flat at times, and the overall story or content doesn't have that spark to keep you engaged from start to finish. So, in conclusion, while it may not be a terrible book, it's also not one that I would highly recommend.

**Expanded Article**:

The importance of exercise truly cannot be emphasized enough. It is an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercise plays a crucial role in keeping our bodies in top-notch condition. It helps to improve our cardiovascular health, making our hearts stronger and more efficient at pumping blood throughout the body. This, in turn, reduces the risk of heart disease and other related conditions.

Regular exercise also has a significant impact on increasing our muscle strength. By engaging in physical activities such as weightlifting or resistance training, we can build and tone our muscles, improving our overall physical performance. Additionally, exercise helps to boost our immune system, making us more resistant to diseases and infections.

Another important benefit of exercise is its ability to help us maintain a healthy weight. By burning calories and increasing our metabolism, exercise can prevent us from gaining excess weight and reduce the risk of obesity. This, in turn, lowers the risk of developing many chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer.

In conclusion, exercise is an incredibly important part of our lives. It offers numerous benefits for our physical and mental health, and should be incorporated into our daily routines. Whether it's going for a jog, hitting the gym, or simply taking a brisk walk, any form of exercise is better than none. So, let's all make a commitment to stay active and healthy!

The story could have been 100 pages longer to further develop the ending.

This would have allowed for a more in-depth exploration of the characters and their relationships, as well as a more satisfying conclusion.

The best part of the story, however, was Steve Martin's infused quirkiness.

His unique brand of humor and eccentricity added a layer of charm and entertainment that made the story truly stand out.

It was refreshing to see a writer take risks and inject their own personality into the narrative.

Overall, while the story may have benefited from a longer ending, Steve Martin's quirkiness more than made up for it.

It was a fun and engaging read that left the reader wanting more.

Perhaps in a future edition, the author will consider expanding the ending to give the story the full treatment it deserves.

The Pleasure of My Company - Steve Martin (176 pg)

What a truly strange book this is!

Martin appears to be so extremely bent on crafting a peculiar and funny character that he doesn't manage to commence telling a proper story until halfway through the book.

The book does possess a certain charm with its humorous elements and the main character is rather touching. However, the overall flow of the book is so erratic and jerky due to its structure.

It becomes just too difficult to fully enjoy the reading experience. One moment, you're engaged with the interesting character, and the next, the disjointed structure disrupts your immersion.

Despite the initial promise of a unique and entertaining read, the inconsistent flow detracts from what could have been a more enjoyable literary journey.

It leaves the reader with a sense of dissatisfaction and a longing for a more seamless and engaging narrative.

This book is truly hilarious.

The main character, although he seems to be all over the place, is actually quite easy to follow.

His tendency to over analyze situations and people is something that I can easily relate to.

It makes the reading experience very enjoyable and engaging.

The author has done a great job of creating a character that is both relatable and entertaining.

I have a rather complex feeling towards Steve Martin. On one hand, I claim to hate him. How could one not? He is outrageously talented in multiple aspects. He is the king of comedy, an incredible banjoist and song-writer, a wildly talented actor, and a wonderful author who has produced emotionally fulfilling gems and treasures.

Steve Martin constantly amazes me. Take, for example, the fact that the same person who played The Jerk could write such a captivating and heartfelt novel. The main character is so vividly imagined that he seems to come to life in the reader's mind. I don't want to spoil the story as it is a short novel. I want everyone to have the same experience I had while reading it. There were parts where I felt emotional concern for the fictitious person, parts where I was frustrated at the barriers he had to overcome to grow in the story, parts where my heart burst with the wonder and joy of the world as seen through Daniel's eyes, and parts that were educational in the realistic portrayal of a person with OCD.

I love this book, and that only intensifies my hatred for Steve Martin. It's just not fair that one man can be so insanely talented that he leaves me in awe and wonder, always eagerly anticipating what he will do next. I first read this book ten years ago when it was released. I loved it then, and I loved it even more the second time around.

Damn you, Steve Martin, you beautiful bastard! Please, don't ever stop creating!

I could tell from the very beginning that I was going to have a great affection for this book. Steve has crafted the character with remarkable brilliance. The character is written in such a manner that one is constantly compelled to think critically about what he is saying. This is because the character is not only intelligent but also grappling with some intense obsessive behavior, to the extent that it becomes debilitating when trying to rationalize his actions. I have perused several of Steve's books. Among his fictional works, this one stands out as my favorite thus far.

Certain elements give me a fleeting sense of the vibes from Only Murders in the Building. It commences by discussing him being accused of a murder, but that is swiftly dispelled as his alibi is verified. However, I just envision that this book might have served as the inspiration for the idea. But starting it in this way immediately puts you on high alert, attempting to evaluate the character, and I felt it was astute to point out that he is not as "average" as his victory in an "average" person contest might imply.

I'm not really spoiling the plot here. It's just a diverting side story. You cheer for him to discover love and surmount some of his "rules". I won't disclose any of that, but I relished the process of figuring out this character as he is in the process of self-discovery.

Taxi Driver for neurotic Woody Allen types

This book is successfully funny. It has a charm that makes you feel the era in which it was written, which was 2003. The author has done a great job of capturing the essence of that time and creating a story that is both entertaining and engaging.

I read this book as the first one of 2025 and finished it in January. It was a great start to the year. The characters are well-developed and the plot is full of twists and turns. It kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good laugh and a story that takes them back in time. It's a must-read for fans of Woody Allen and anyone who loves a good comedy.

Like the narrator of Walker Percy's wonderful novel
  The Moviegoer
, Daniel Cambridge enjoys the existence of several women in his life.

Clarissa, a young and earnest, yet rather ditzy wannabe shrink, visits him twice a week to evaluate his progress in overcoming neurotic habits that prevent him from normal participation in life. Regarding their current arrangement, he ponders, "One of us is getting screwed. Either she's a professional and I should be paying her, or she's an intern and I'm a guinea pig." His musings sometimes also veer into speculation about their potential for a personal relationship, despite the fact that her name has no anagram (a serious obstacle, in his view).

Philippa, an upstairs neighbor, drops by occasionally for a fruit drink and a chat, unaware that the chats are so enjoyable because he laces her drinks with small doses of his meds. A closer relationship with Philippa, while entirely possible, is hindered by the presence of her live-in boyfriend, a real brute, and by Daniel's insistence that the light bulbs burning in his apartment always add up to a certain specific total wattage.

Zandy, a beautiful pharmacist at the neighborhood Rite-Aid, has skin that he imagines has never been touched by makeup or sunshine, only by the fluorescent lights of the store. Zandy is an ideal that he can only admire from a distance, but simply looking at her from time to time is fulfilling.

Elizabeth, a real estate agent, he perceives as having "assembled herself from the best cosmetics available." He pretends to be interested in renting a new apartment, and when she is in it with him, clicking through the empty room in her high heels, he views the event as a precursor to the time when they might be living together.

This story is both laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking, as Daniel's situation is so recognizably human. Occasionally, the discomfort overshadows the humor, but exploring real problems is the essence of comedy (I discuss that in another review here). Ultimately, the story is mind-expanding, life-affirming, beautifully structured, and just plain good. I highly recommend it to everyone.

This book is truly a prime example of the Steve Martin novel/novella.

It is deeply introspective, delving into the inner thoughts and emotions of the characters in a profound way.

There is a touch of post-modernism, with its unique narrative structure and use of literary devices that keep the reader engaged and intrigued.

The story can make you feel slightly uncomfortable at times, as it explores some of the darker aspects of the human psyche.

However, in the end, it is ultimately satisfying, leaving you with a sense of fulfillment and a newfound understanding of the characters and their experiences.

The story of one man's ascent out of madness is both compelling and believable, drawing you in and making you root for his recovery.

I truly liked this one a lot and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and engaging read.
