Oh, I am truly saddened to have come to the end of this book.

For more than a month now, I have been reading approximately 20 pages every night before going to sleep. Strangely enough, I think I have been sleeping better as a result.

E.B. White is what the kids would refer to as a "class act." These letters are, at times, deeply poignant and at others, uproariously hilarious, with a definite emphasis on the funny side.

After reading so many exquisitely crafted sentences, I can't help but feel that my own writing must improve by some sort of osmosis.

This book has also ignited a strong desire in me to move to a farm right away. Maybe we will acquire just two geese and start a new life in the countryside.

Who knows what adventures await us there?

A Monumental Collection of E.B. White's Letters

A truly remarkable and monumental collection of the letters penned by the renowned children's author, E.B. White, exists. I couldn't resist picking up and skimming through the very letters that served as the foundation for Melissa Sweet's Some Writer!: The Story of E.B. White.

As I delved into these letters, I was deeply inspired by White's remarkable wit and his endearing humbleness. His words seemed to leap off the page, painting a vivid picture of his life and thoughts. However, as I read, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and lamentation for the lost art of letter writing. In today's digital age, with its quick texts and emails, the personal touch and thoughtfulness that went into writing a letter by hand seem to have been largely forgotten.

The beauty and charm of receiving a handwritten letter, with its carefully chosen words and unique penmanship, is something that cannot be replicated in the digital realm. It is a tangible piece of someone's heart and soul, a connection that is truly special. E.B. White's letters serve as a reminder of the importance and value of this lost art, and I can't help but long for a time when letter writing was the norm once again.

This collection is not the ideal starting point for those who wish to explore E.B. White's works.

Although it offers consistent enjoyment to those who simply appreciate good, clear, and amusing writing, it alone would not suffice to establish White as a great writer without the presence of works like One Man's Meat, Charlotte's Web, or The Elements of Style.

Moreover, since this collection was assembled during White's lifetime and he was well aware of what biographers and interpreters might do, there are not many major revelations or controversial attitudes towards other writers (Hemingway and Woollcott are gently criticized; Thoreau and Perelman are highly praised) or friends.

As you read this, you form a picture of a man who detested ritual, loathed public speaking, abhorred typos, adored sailing, loved animals, cherished Katherine White, and valued freedom with responsibility.

You find yourself wondering why he was constantly ill - especially considering Katherine was even sicker and in a more serious condition - but you also come to love his gentle irony and his always interesting ways with words, despite his frequent claims that he couldn't write or hated to write.

The best parts are his letters firmly defending the truth and clarity of Charlotte's Web. His is the most compelling argument for spiders anywhere.

This book truly makes me feel an intense nostalgia for real correspondence and personal letters.

Most of the time nowadays, the only way we hear from others is through their broadcasts on social media. However, these are not real conversations or even personal. They are just shallow and self-centered me-isms.

Even email seems to be too much of a hassle for some people, let alone the act of putting a real pen to real paper. Is it archaic? Maybe, but don't you recall the excitement of receiving something in the mail that isn't a bill (and who even gets those via USPS anymore?) or something addressed to Occupant?

E. B. White was an extremely prolific letter writer, and his letters were the kind that one would desire to keep and read over and over again. He was hilarious, mostly at his own expense, and such a great storyteller even in his casual correspondence.

The book is quite long, and I believe I would have relished it even more if I had spread it out over a period of months instead of attempting to read it all within the short library loan time I had. His granddaughter and other editors did an outstanding job of providing context with footnotes and introductions whenever necessary.

Still, EBW maintained such a long and vigorous correspondence that the reader easily gets to know his friends and family through these missives. It's a delightful read, and far more enjoyable than one might anticipate. Even his brief letters of instruction to assistants or publishers often contained some quirky observation or tidbit about his day that must have made the recipient smile. (Or perhaps groan since EBW was not above using puns or intentional non-sequiturs.)

There were also some surprises hidden within the letters. It appears that EBW was not at all pleased with the animated version of Charlotte's Web. He was among the few who told the Book of the Month Club to take a hike with their hefty advance because he wasn't willing to agree to their holding his book hostage. He nearly told the publisher of The Elements of Style to shove off rather than change the tone of the book to appease others. He defended the free press and the responsibilities of writers with a sharp pen numerous times throughout his career. He was far more than the "simple, inept writer" and "almost farmer" that he claimed to be.

A few months ago, I embarked on a literary journey with "Letters of E.B. White." From the very first page, I was captivated by the beauty of his writing. So much so that I made a conscious decision to read the book slowly, savoring each letter as if it were a precious gem.

I would pause after each letter, allowing the words to soak in and digest before moving on to the next one. This deliberate pace allowed me to truly appreciate the nuances of White's writing style and the depth of his thoughts.

As I neared the end of the book, I came across a letter in which White mentioned that he took longer to read good writers, as he wanted to fully savor their work. It was as if he had peered into my mind and described exactly what I was doing at that very moment.

When I finally turned the last page and closed the book, a sense of sadness washed over me. Sadness because White's life had come to an end, and there would never be another letter from him. I hate closing the cover of a book that I have truly loved, as it feels like saying goodbye to a dear friend.

With good writing, I am insatiable. I always crave more, eager to be transported into another world through the power of words. "Letters of E.B. White" has left an indelible mark on me, and I will forever cherish the time I spent with this remarkable collection of letters.
