I have never read any work by Fannie Flag before. However, I have friends who are fond of her books. So, when I came across this particular one at Costco, I decided to buy it. It turned out to be a great choice and seemed quite appropriate for the occasion. We drove to my parents' home in Idaho for Thanksgiving. This gave me approximately 4 good hours of reading time each way, excluding the time I spent with my eyes closed. My parents are in their 80's, just like the main character in the book, Elner. The exact year of Elner's birth was unknown as her sister had buried the family bible years ago to hide the year of her own birth. The book delves into various aspects of life, such as life and death, relationships, and what life truly means. Elner's life had a profound impact on many people, and I really took a liking to her. She didn't care about what others thought of her and always had an open mind towards people and the world. Elner was a charming person, and Fannie Flag's description of heaven and God was enjoyable to read. When I finished the book, it was a bit like attending a funeral, hearing inspiring stories about the person, and then reflecting on what people might say at your own funeral, and finally making a silent promise to live a better life.
