Our book group made the decision to read this particular book, which was a contender for "Canada Reads" in 2004. However, it not only failed to win that prestigious accolade but also failed to hold my attention.

I can't help but think that perhaps it must have lost a great deal in translation. Maybe the essence and the charm that the original version might have possessed got lost in the process of being translated into English.

As a result, it just didn't have the same appeal and failed to captivate me as I had hoped it would.

In a Gaspe campground, he encounters a young native woman. The two decide to set off together in their van, which they affectionately call the Volks.

They drive south, passing through St Louis and Kansas City. Then, they follow the Oregon Trail all the way to San Francisco.

Along the way, they experience short vignettes of the people and places they encounter. Although it may not be the best travelogue, having been translated from French and potentially losing some of its poetry, it still manages to strike a chord with the reader.

It reminds me of my own van travels, complete with mechanical problems and the Volks' arduous struggle over the Rockies.

The story takes us on a vivid adventure, filled with the joys and challenges of the open road.

This is a truly strange little book that I happened to pick up a week ago at a charming little independent bookshop in British Columbia. And I have to say, I absolutely adored it!

Perhaps I'm just a die-hard fan of road trip sagas, but there was so much to love about this book. I was completely drawn to both of the main characters. There's the writer, Jack Waterman, who is on a quest to find his brother Theo. And then there's his mysterious Metis companion, known as Le Grande Sauterelle (the big grasshopper, due to her long legs).

The two meet along the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec and embark on an epic journey all the way to San Francisco. Along the way, a wealth of history is seamlessly inserted, making the story not only entertaining but also educational. They also have some fascinating and memorable encounters with various folks, which add depth and color to the narrative.

Now, I understand that this book won't be to everyone's taste. Some may find it a little tired or hackneyed. And perhaps if I had read it at a different time, I might not have liked it as much. But for me, right here and now, it was the perfect read. So I highly recommend giving it a try, at least taking it for a spin around the block. You might just find yourself so enthralled that you decide to go all the way to San Francisco with Jack and Le Grande Sauterelle.
