I like the lonely planet guides. They provide a good mix of history with easy to find reference information.

This is for the 12th edition. Much to my annoyance, Lonely Planet now tries to obfuscate what year its guides are published. So I don't know the year, but the information in it was reasonably accurate. Oddly enough, at 472 pages it still seemed a little thin for a city like London, which offers so much to do and see. I mostly used it as a source of suggestions for places to visit. I was surprised on this visit, my second - the first was over 15 years ago - at some of the changes I saw. For one, the downtown, touristy areas were absolutely packed with people; it seems that London is more than ever a popular place to visit. Not surprisingly, costs have gone up. Overall the quality of the writing and the suggestions for places to visit were good, if not spectacular.

This is my top place to go sometime in my life. Read it for a trip, then didn't get to go. Seems like a really great guide book for London.

Yes, London is a big city and there's a lot to cover, but everytime I wanted to look up a certain restaurant or find a bar near me this guide was severely lacking. Also, probably not really the book I needed while debating becoming a resident, this guide clearly (as it should) focuses on the tourists point of view.

I love the Lonely Planet books. Plenty of words when you want them and it's easy enough to skim through the stuff that you don't care for.

One notable thing that this book lacked is information on pub quizzes and trivia in London. I'm sure it's a burgeoning scene for quizzers and yet there's scarcely a mention.

I've always loved Lonely Planet's books. I read this - cover to cover! - before my trip to London earlier this year.

Good recommendations, accurate maps, updated listings. Very useful even for a second timer like me.

The only thing I wished from LP books (or rather all travel guidebooks) is that they cover halal restaurants as well.

But hey, that's where the internet comes handy :)

You guys, one week from today I'm going to London for the first time ever OMG OMG OMG OMG.

Anyone want to tell me about amazing places to visit and neighborhoods to stroll through and foods to eat and things to do? The quirkier and stranger and underground-er the better.

Dit boek stond nog in mijn kast en om weer nieuwe ideeën voor Londen op te doen ben ik het gaan lezen. Het is wel een versie van 2008, maar het meeste wat er in staat is nog steeds te bezichtigen in en om Londen. Hooguit zijn prijzen die worden genoemd in het boek nu anders.

In het verleden heb ik dit boek al eens eerder gelezen en er aantekeningen in gemaakt. Een aantal van die aantekeningen heb ik nu weer overgenomen als sightseeing tips. Maar mijn smaak is over de jaren anders geworden. Hierdoor andere plekken als idee toegevoegd aan de wensenlijst om te bezoeken in Londen.

Niet alles in dit boek is bruikbaar vind ik. De eerste helft van het boek met beschrijvingen van de verschillende Londense wijken is zeer bruikbaar en leverde me inspiratie op. Maar de tweede helft met onderwerpen als winkelen, eten en nachtleven sprak me minder aan.

Maar al met al genoeg nieuwe inspiratie opgedaan door dit boek te herlezen.

Very useful guide to the city of London. Great recommendations by neighborhood plus detailed guides and visuals for numerous landmarks and historical palaces. The maps are helpful and the history sections are insightful. I've used this guide on two separate trips and wouldn't leave home without it!
