i didn't expect a satire book about the sex lives of college kids in the 80s and the nihilistic view of the death of the romance to hold much relevance. yet, somehow it's almost timeless? the book shifts perspectives through it's characters so well. everyone is clearly an unreliable narrator and part of the fun is finding some semblance of truth. it was an easy read once i stopped being confused about who the characters were (i will admit after the first 40 pages i made a cheat sheet to help.) nothing major happens- it's ellis after all. he focuses on the tone of a small northeastern liberal arts college in the 80s and captures a complex love triangle with humor and an interesting melancholic feeling.
