Think I was expecting deeper analysis, but he's a fiction writer so I don't know why I thought that's what I was going to get. Still, I enjoyed his observations on the film. I learnt that Rushdie sees the Wiz of Oz as the source, along with another film that I'm damned if I can remember now, of the 'magical realism' of his own work. Mostly it just made me want to watch the movie again, with slightly fresher eyes, and what're books about films for if not that?
Some interesting information and perspective. I would have liked a bit more detail on certain subjects... Garland's treatment and experience, Munchkin antics. The short story was a bit convoluted.
This is how I found Salman Rushdie - in his response to The Wizard of Oz. Through it I learnt of his relationship with his dad and I made a connection to him through which I'll always view his other work.
Wanted more analysis. You get some, but then you get a strange surreal truly uninteresting short story by Rushdie included at the end of the book. You just scratch your head. Why?
Have you ever wanted to see a yellow brick road? The wizard of oz is an adventure novel.I love this book and I recommend this book to everyone who has seen the movie because it is very different.
A girl named Dorthy and her dog got stuck in a twister. When she lands in a weird place she comes out if her house and is thanked. Dorthy was confused why she was being thanked. The setting is in Kansas and she has to follow a yellow brick road to find someone. The plot is that she finds a tin-man,a scarecrow, and a lion. The conflict is person vs person because Dorthy runs into a man that wont let her see the wizard. The theme is in Kansas trying to get home.
The first person point of view affects the story because it lets you know what everyone is saying.Dorthy ends up freaking out because she dropped a house on someone.
In my opinion she shouldn't have felt bad because she didn't do it to be mean. When she went home she felt like she actualy did it all.The witch under the house was dead but it wasn't her falt.
I give this book four stars because it was a little weird.I would recommend this to all teachers.Don't always believe what you dream because if you do you will believe many weird things and the weird things you dream most likely will never come true.
It's interesting to read this mostly personal recollection of what the film meant to him as a child, and certainly I can see the connections to some of his novels he touches on. It feels oddly like I'd seen the movie with him and he was holding forth over drinks, afterwards. I was, however, startled by repeated reference to Garland/Dorothy being overweight during the film -- that had never, ever occured to me and that kind of judgment of women gets my hackles up.
I loved this book! I can't speak to the series, but Salman Rushdie is fantastic, and I appreciate his commentary on one of my favorite films. I'm ready to watch the movie again. FYI: If Toto is your favorite character of this tale, prepare to be offended. Rushdie's hatred of Toto really made me laugh. It only gets 4 stars because as much as I loved it, I was left wondering what the purpose of this series was. (It didn't make me want to read every book in the series...it just made me THINK about Baum's Oz in literature vs. film and deepened my affections for Rushdie. Perhaps as I read more, I will be able to discern the connection being made between the books and the movies.
I chose this book because I have seen the movie and wanted to see if the book is different. In the book The Wizard of Oz, Dorthy lived in Kansas with her family. A tragic event occurs in Dorthy’s life which made her end up in the magical land of Oz. As she tries to find her way back home she meets several interesting characters and they become fast friends. Dorthy discovers that an item she has had with her the entire time is the secret to returning home.
I felt the book was just as interesting as the movie. The author did a good job describing the events that happen in the book. I liked this book because it was very detailed. For me it was hard to put the book down. It is very interesting the whole book, not just at the end. All the characters have their own personality
I recommend this book to people who have seen the movie The Wizard of Oz and thought the movie was good. I say this because the book is even better than the movie. I say this book would be good for a young adult or even a child who likes reading adventure books because Dorthy and her friends are on a mission the whole time because they all want something from the wizard.
