کل کتاب پر بود از اِلِما‌ن‌های تکراری: سه تا برادر که میخوان برن دنبال سرنوشتشون‌، نامادری بدجنس و جادوگر پیر، شاهزاده‌ی خوش بر و رویی که طلسم شده، دختر فقیر و خوشگلی که پسر پادشاه توی یه نگاه عاشقش میشه، عروسی، عروسی، عروسی. از بین ۱۰۰ تا داستان، کمتر افسانه‌ای بود که واقعا بشه بهش گفت افسانه.
این دو تا ستاره هم یکیش برای تلاش نویسنده برای جمع‌آوری این داستان‌ها و یکیشم برای ترجمه‌ی عالی کتاب.

I did not end up finishing this, although I read most of it. Most of the tales featured familiar tropes in an uninteresting way, and hardly any captured me. I felt like I was reading all of my least favorite Grimm and Lang stories.

Le fiabe raccolte da Calvino sono "diverse", nonostante gli stereotipi. Sarà stato perché mia madre era solita leggermele quando ero piccola (Zio Lupo era una presenza fissa nei miei incubi!), ma sono state capaci tuttora di affascinarmi e trasportarmi in mondi magici in cui tutto è possibile.

Nagyon jó ízléssel válogatott és összerakott mesék. Felnőttek számára mind tökéletes, gyerekek kamaszkoron alul nem hiszem, hogy tudnának velük mit kezdeni. Például az utolsó mese sztoikus főszereplőjével, aki megtehetné, hogy örökké él, de szándékosan megadja magát a halálnak. Vagy azokkal a mesékkel, amelyekben a főszereplő veszít, és még nevetségessé is válik. Számomra nagy élményt jelentett, hogy mindegyik mese tudott valami újat mutatni: váratlan cselekményfordulatot, szokatlan szereplőt, furcsa és ügyes motívumot. Újraolvasós.

5/7/2012: Eight hundred pages, with 200 folk and fairy tales from Italy. I've read about 40 tales so far, and am not even a fourth of the way into the book. I enjoy these kinds of stories, but they have enough in common with each other that I'm starting to get burned out. I will probably set this one aside and read something else for a while, then come back to this with a fresh outlook.

6/3/2012: Never did get back to this book. I'm returning it to the library unfinished. I enjoyed the tales I read, but they all tend to run together after a while. I would have enjoyed a volume with maybe half the number of tales, with some illustrations to go along with them.

As a young boy I learned many things. That houses could walk on chickens legs, and that the world of fantasy could be full of nasty little people doing nasty little things. This is something Ive taken into my adult world, and am most grateful to have discovered these wayward truths. Folktales carry much that is good in them, and these especially.

Generally speaking, I don't post books on Goodreads that I have read more than 20 years ago. I read this extraordinary and deep collection in 1990, but parts of it still haunt me.

Ah an oldie but a goodie ... pulled this out to read some of the tales to my 3 year old. While she fell asleep during the 1st one, I kept reading. This is a book I've read before (parts), but enjoy again and again.

This is a great read of not only 200 Italian folk tales, but also background notes on the set and on each individual story. There are many familiar tales and many not-so-familiar. Collector Italo Calvino has tried to remain true to the original tales, not tweeking them for German children like the Grimms, nor for the "gentle English minds" as with Andrew Lang and company. Therefore, there are some lovely true Italian stories in this collection. Great short reads.
