Interesting story

This story is full of the tangled history of disappointments and untruths that can gather around a family over the generations, especially a family whose members willfully refuse to see and acknowledge the truth about themselves. Emily, Charlotte 's sister, has married into such a family and her poor husband, George, pays the price. This turn of events made me sad. I rather liked George as a character. He certainly had his faults but in general he was fairly innocuous for his time and otherwise very likeable. Charlotte and Pitt have a real challenge unraveling the truth and unlike most books the answer isn't very clear, even when it comes. The murderer's motive remains murky and unclear, even if Charlotte is convinced she's figured it out.

I didn't know if I should give it four stars or one. Feeling generous so I went with four. This was my favorite in the series so far...until the very end. I HATED the ending.

Although I enjoy the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series, I found this book difficult to get into. Although the 1st chapter deals with the apparent murder of a woman, the 2nd through 5th chapters read like a love novel rather than a murder mystery. A lot of the book deals primarily with ''society" in the late 1800's in London which can be tedious, however, there is a good murder mystery in this novel, actually more than one. Eventually the 1st chapter is tied into the rest of the story. Not my favorite of the series but still worth reading.

While it is not necessary to read the books in sequence there is some benefit to doing so, however, in case one has not done so, this book contains notes referencing the titles of 4 earlier books in the series to which reference is made.

The characters in this book seemed so real that I had a hard time tearing myself away from it. Many nights I fell asleep while trying to read one more page and would often awaken several hours later to find myself sitting up in bed holding the book with the lights still burning. I highly recommend it.

This is another winner. Anne Perry writes a wonderful murder mysteries. I highly recommend all her series to everyone who love Victorian mysteries. Diana Romano

This is one of my favorites. They mystery is good, as is the red herring.

I also really like Stripe.

8/10
Two seemingly unrelated murders and a cast of suspects with secrets galore, amidst a vivid backdrop of Victorian London. Thomas and Charlotte Pitt eventually figure it out, even as the case strikes chillingly close to them.

This was kind of a two-fer, where investigating one mystery helps solve another only minimally related. Well done and a Good Read.

ALWAYS A PLEASURE

As always, a crime has been committed; Thomas Pitt is called in; His wife, as usual, is ready to help; between the two they solve the crime and life carries on.

I’ve enjoyed this series, but this was not one of my favorites. Both. Charlotte and Emily were much less level-headed than usual, especially Charlotte, who is prone to risking danger, but not usually so foolish as she is portrayed in this novel. I’ll continue with the series when I need some light entertainment, as I generally enjoy Anne Perry’s style of writing.

I have read most of the previous books in this series and have found them to be excellent. A lot of this book felt stretched simply to add pages and in my mind the ending was not fully closed. I will continue reading others and I am sure they will be better.

When you read the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries, you get a birds-eye view of what it must have been like in Regency England. At times, Jane Austen's influence appears during conversations among the elites. At other times, mystery is the center of the story. As always, a good read
