Este ‘Dias da Birmânia’ foi o primeiro romance de George Orwell antecedendo os mega-sucessos (dois últimos livros): “Triunfo dos Porcos” e “1984”.
A estória está excelentemente contada, com abundância de descrições, belíssimas, sobre o território que hoje se designa Myanmar – por isso mesmo, algumas vezes, recordou-me as Viagens na Minha Terra, tão caseiro, mas publicado mais de cinquenta anos antes.
Não tendo ‘aproveitado’ a oportunidade enquanto aluno em Eton (o King's College of Our Lady of Eton) e as portas ‘folheadas a ouro’, das carreiras que abre, Orwell, segue para o Indian Civil Service, (via para o funcionalismo no império britânico na Índia), e faz carreira como polícia na Birmânia, onde recolhe o conhecimento e o enquadramento, físico e social, para esta estória.
Pese embora alguns receios iniciais de que a obra pudesse causar escândalo (mais precisamente: acções judiciais) na Inglaterra da época, tendo sido primeiro editada nos EUA, não tem ainda a profunda carga política que encontraremos mais tarde. Tem, outrossim, uma caracterização, notável, das (más qualidades) humanas, ou talvez, das características inerentes à espécie humana que catalogamos normalmente como negativas, atrozes, pretendendo que o mainstream é muito mais róseo e muito diferente do odioso habitualmente varrido para debaixo dos tapetes.

এই বই শুরুই হয় এক ইতর বর্মীরে দিয়ে, যার বিছানার বর্ণনায় লেখা, এই বিছানায় সে ধর্ষণ করেছে শত শতবার। অন্য বিলিতিদের সাথে এই লোকের পার্থক্যের জায়গাটা হইলো গিয়ে, তাদের বইতে হয় এই অঞ্চলের লোকে খারাপ, নয়ত সবাই ভালো — শুধু কিছু ভুল বোঝাবুঝির দোষ। অথবা হয়ত, কেউ কেউ ঊনিশ বিশ। এই বইয়ের সবাই খারাপ। মূল নায়করে আর কোনোভাবে খারাপ প্রমাণ করতে না পেরে, শেষে মুখে একটা দাগ আছে, সেই দাগের ঘাঁড়ে দোষ চাপাইতে হইলো। শুধু দোষ চাপায়েই ত ক্ষান্তি না, লোকে ত চাইলেও বিশ্বাস করতে পারবে না, একটা মানুষের মুখের এক দিকের জন্মদাগেরে এত দায় দেয়া যায় যে। তাই ঐটার কথা দুই পাতা পরপর স্থায়ী হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হইছে। ওষুধ গেলানো আর কারে বলে।

মীনা রাজু সংলাপ আছে কিছু, গল্পের মূল কালপ্রেত আর তার বউয়ের ভেতর। তুমি টাকা টাকা করে কী হবে, আমাদের ত সব আছে,– আরে কী বলছো গো তুমি বউ, আরো চাই, আরো চাই – এবং অবধারিত ধুন হিসেবে মুখের ঐ জন্মদাগের সাথে আছে ভারতীয়দের মুখে রসুন রসুন রসুন, একটা মানুষ যে প্রতিদিন রসুন নিয়ে কথা বলবে, আচ্ছা, বলুক। কিন্তু এ ছাড়াও আছে সবাইরে খারাপ বানাইতে হবে যেহেতু, নায়িকার এক জায়গায় অদ্ভূত আচরণ। সে প্রথমে দুই অ্যাংলোর জন্য কিছু করা যায় কী না ভাবলো, কারণ লেখকের দেখাইতে হবে যে ঐ সমাজে অ্যাংলোদের জন্য কিছুই করা হবে না, আর পরক্ষণেই তার মুখ ঘৃণায় কুঁচকায় উঠলো, কারণ লেখকের দেখাইতে হবে, নায়িকার মনে কোনো সহমর্মিতা নাই, সেও এক বাজে মেমসাহেব!

এইসব গান্ধামো হাজার চুরাশিতে মানায়, সেই জায়গার মানুষেরা খারাপ হইতে পারে এমন। এইসব গান্ধামো খামারবাড়িতে মানায়, আমি ত ঐ বইয়ের প্রথম দৃশ্যেই বিশ্বাস অবিশ্বাস শিকে ঝুলায়ে রাখতেছি। যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত কাতালোনিয়াতেও, আচ্ছা মানলাম, কিন্তু এই বর্মা মুলুকে, জবরদস্তি করে সব কয়টারে বানায়ে ছাড়বো খারাপ —

এছাড়াও আছে ভূমিকম্প এক্স মাকিনা, সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য সময়ে এসে আর কোনো অজুহাত না পেয়ে, যেহেতু দেব দেবতা আনা যাচ্ছে না, একটা ভূমিকম্প বাঁধায়ে দেয়া। এবং আছে লেখকের একটা প্রশ্ন, ইজ দেয়ার এনিথিং ইন দ্য ওয়ার্ল্ড মোর গ্রেইসলেস, মোর ডিজঅনারিং, দ্যান টু ডিজায়ার এ উওম্যান ইউ উইল নেভার হ্যাভ?
এইটা যদি ডিজঅনারিং হয়, আমি বাঁচি কী প্রকারে!

একেবারে বাজে বই না নিশ্চয়ই, ভালো একটা শিকারের দৃশ্য আছে, আছে একটা অদ্ভূত ছোটো বিপ্লবের সীন, শেষ একশ পাতায় কাহিনী বেশ ভালোই তড়তড়ায়, শেষটাও বেশ চমৎকার, বেশ বলি কেনো, ভালোমতন ভালো। কিন্তু ঐ শেষে আসতে গিয়ে এর আগের দুই আড়াইশ পাতা প্রায় না, পুরোপুরি গলদ্ঘর্ম হতে হয়। এই বই, সংশ্লিষ্ট সবার বদনামে ছয়লাপ একটা বই, সংশ্লিষ্ট প্রত্যেকের জন্য এই বই আনফ্ল্যাটারিং।
সম্ভবত এর ফলে পাঠকসমাজ কিছুটা তাড়িত, কিছুটা ফ্ল্যাটারিত বোধ করে থাকতে পারেন। মনে হয়।

داستان در منطقه کی یا اوکتادا در حدود سال1926 در کشور برمه متسعمره انگلیس میگذره.جان فلوری تاجر چوب 35 ساله که مجرده دارای افکار روشنفکری و طرفدار برابری حقوق با اهالی برمه است و به ظلم و ستمی که به اونها میره ناراحته.
در عین حال آدمیه ترسو و بدون اعتماد به نفس و خیلی هم پولدار نیست و قادر به بیان تفکراتش پیش بقیه انگلیسیا نیست.
اون دوست دکتر وراسومی برمه ای هسش که حتی دوستش هم چیزی از حرفای روشنفکری درک نمیکنه.
فلوری با زن روسپی به نام ماهلامی هم در ارتباطه که در اخر همین ارتباط بیچاره اش میکنه.
شخصیت اصلی این داستان (فوری) خودش یک تبعه انگلیس هست اما از اوضاعی که بر مردم کشور برمه می‌گذرد به‌شدت بیزاره و در هر فرصتی از آن انتقاد می‌کنه.
درحالی��که خود مردم برمه به این طرز زندگی عادت کرده‌اند، اون نسبت به این وضعیت اظهار انزجار می‌کنه؛ اما چون اعتماد به نفس نداره، نمی‌تونه این عقایدش را به‌طور آشکار نشون بده؛ چون میدونه که تمام اروپاییهای ساکن برمه به‌شدت از شیوه حکومت بر مردم راضی و حتی طالب واردآوردن فشار بیشتر بر آنها هستن. .

George’s fictionalised account of his time in Burma with our brave old lads in the Indian Imperial Police. Flory is our antihero, desperately striving for decency and brotherhood and love in a moral backwater populated by the drunk whore-mongering Old Guard English and corrupt local blackmailers, rapists and tyrants (rolled into one here as U Po Kyin). Caught in the middle are the unfortunate Burmese and Indians trapped in an easily manipulated honour system, ruled over with contempt by the institutionally racist English masters. An unflinching depiction of yet another bleak chapter in Britain’s history of world-conquering adventures in repression and brutality. Since all the “bad” archetypes are bundled into the book (i.e. the characters whose attitudes George has to blast) the novel’s credibility is occasionally stretched. But there’s no denying these warped human dung beetles existed and befouled the planet with their pestilence for far too long. As Wayne Coyne and his Lips know well, with loving hands, evil will prevail.

Eeeeh… no.

The real question is: Has anyone ever truly enjoyed a book that they were forced to read for school? (Thank God I'm almost done already.)

Orwell lived for several years in Burma as a minor police official in the fast-dying Raj. "Shooting the Elephant" is the more famous short story of the absurd to come from this period. But his novel "Burmese Days" may have a more clever twist: it's the photographic negative of Jane Austin's "Emma". After a slow start focusing on an intelligent Orwell stand-in who is a fish-out-of-water in the "play, play up the game" of the white man's world, a woman of marriageable age suddenly appears. Though deeply unsuited for each other, she is on the verge of accepting proposals he never quite makes: because he talks too much, because of an earthquake (Hemingway, anyone?), etc.

But then, after a series of misadventures:


"She understood his character perfectly now. She understood why it was that he had so often bored her and irritated her. He was a highbrow--her deadliest word--a highbrow to be classed with Lenin, A.J. Cook and the dirty little poets in the Montparnasse cafés. She could have forgiven him even his Burmese mistress more easily than that."


The protagonist does not blame the beginning-of-the-book, unenlightened Emma stand-in:



"The gods are just and of our pleasant vices (pleasant, indeed [and I understood this to refer not merely to sex but to the apple of learning]) make instruments to plague us. He had dirtied himself beyond redemption, and this was his just punishment."



As you would expect in an inverted Austin, all does not end well. But the Orwell stand-in speaks volumes about not just unsuitable couples, but the post-Kipling Raj, when the white men still congratulating themselves for shouldering the burden had no idea the clock was winding to zero.

A bleak story of thwarted love and existential ennui set amidst, and intertwining with, the horrific evil of British rule in Burma. The characters are well-drawn and believable; the language is admirably clear despite a plethora of untranslated Burmese words; and the plot is engaging, if not overly suspenseful. The only stylistic drawback is that the pace is a bit slow. Though clearly an attack on colonialism, the novel never preaches and there's no one to root for. Even the protagonist, who's repulsed by his countrymen's virulent racism, petty snobbery, greed, and hypocrisy, is a mostly unsympathetic character, having been twisted by the moral swamp in which he lives. On finishing the novel one is left feeling sad, disgusted, and very, very glad that the sun has set on the British Empire.

Needless to say, when this obscure one was assigned to us, I felt I was once again venturing out of my comfort zone. Still, isn’t that the role of English instructors – to challenge their students to read beyond rom-coms and mystery thrillers?

Once again, this one was another donation to my Little Free Library Shed, tantalizing me to move from my Grisham reading pile to write this long-awaited review. So here I am.

For those who don’t know it, this actually was Orwell’s debut novel, first published in 1934. It is set in the fictional Kyauktada in the 1920’s during the British Empire. In many respects it is a story of the author’s own experience while living in British-ruled India where he was born.

This is a story of Orwell’s protagonist, John Flory, a white timber-merchant who defies convention by befriending a native, making him somewhat an anti-hero. The story it-self doesn’t evoke any feelings of compassion for any characters, other than Dr. Veraswami. Most the others were a contemptible bunch of bullies who were unprincipled.

But, this is how Orwell felt about what he truly saw and experienced with British colonialism.

“I dare say it’s unfair in some ways and inaccurate in some details, but much of it is simply reporting what I have seen.”

Mostly this is a provocative tale. A tale of identity, loneliness, ignorance, racism and greed.

One that can be considered perfect for discussion. With some amazing quotes to also consider great discussion topics. I can see why our English instructor selected it for his students.

สนุกดี นิยายจิกกัดเสียดสีระบอบอาณานิคมอังกฤษในพม่า ตัวเอกเป็นคนผิวขาวคนเดียวทั้งเรื่องที่พอ "เข้าใจ" และ "เห็นใจ" ชนพื้นเมืองคือชาวพม่า แต่ก็เป็น anti-hero ไม่ใช่ "พระเอก" เพราะมีนิสัยเสียหลายอย่าง โดยเฉพาะความขี้ขลาดตาขาว สันหลังยาว ฯลฯ ราวกับว่าผู้เขียนคือ จอร์จ ออร์เวล ระดมเอาแบบฉบับ (stereotypes) แย่ๆ ทั้งหมดของคนอังกฤษยุคล่าอาณานิคมมารวมไว้ในนิยายเล่มเดียว ซึ่งก็อาจทำให้นิยายเรื่องนี้ดูอคติและเหนือจริงมากกว่าสมจริง ถ้าผู้อ่านคนนี้ไม่บังเอิญได้รู้จักเพื่อนตัวเป็นๆ ที่มีนิสัยละม้ายคล้ายกับตัวละครในเรื่อง นั่นคือ คนอังกฤษที่คิดว่าชาติตน "เหนือกว่า" คนผิวเหลือง และคนอินเดียที่หลงใหลในวัฒนธรรมอังกฤษ หรือเป็นอังกฤษยิ่งกว่าคนอังกฤษ :)

ภาษาและลีลาเหลือร้าย บรรยายฉากชีวิตในพม่าและความรู้สึกนึกคิดของตัวละครได้อย่างมีสีสัน ไม่น่าเชื่อว่านี่คือนิยายเรื่องแรกในชีวิตของออร์เวล สำนวนแปลของคุณบัญชาก็ถ่ายทอดลีลาของคนเขียนมาได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม

This is not a pleasant book to read. I found the characters generally unpleasant and the story extraordinarily depressing. At the same time Orwell pulled no punches in the lacerating portralts of the "civilised" white bureaucracy.
Orwell gives the lie to the patriarchal colonial attitude we find in Kipling's dreadful poem: "Take Up the white man's burden". However noble the poet's personal beliefs were in that piece, and I don't doubt but that they were genuine, the reality was far more corrupt.

هذا هو ثاني كتاب ألفه جورج أورويل وهو عبارة عن رواية مبنية على أحداث حقيقية شهدها في بورما التي كانت جزءاً من مستعمرة الهند أثناء خدمته لخمس سنوات كضابط شرطة. اختار أورويل الرواية لايصال رسالته ضد الاستعمار ﻷنه خاف من الملاحقات القضائية إن كتب الأسماء الحقيقية للأشخاص المتورطين في هذه الأحداث.

تدور الأحداث بشكل بطيء وملل بعض الشيء، وتتطرق لفساد وعنصرية المسؤولين في بورما تحت الاستعمار البريطاني، ولكنها كذلك تشير لبعض فوائد الاستعمار ولطريقة تعاطي السكان مع المستعمرين. شخصية البطل تمثل أوريل والذي يظهر نفسه كش��ب أبيض يكره العنصرية ولكنه جبان لا يجرؤ على التعبير عن آرائه، فضلًا عن القيام بأي أعمال ضد الاستعمار، وفي المقابل هناك صديقه الطبيب البورمي ذو البشرة الصفراء والقلب البريطاني الذي يحب الاستعمار ويرى فيه الخير. أحداث الرواية تتضمن المؤامرة والطمع وكذلك الحب والخيانة.

بشكل عام الرواية عادية ولا تقارب بأي شكل من الأشكال روايات أورويل الشهيرة، ولا عجب أنه أوصى بعدم نشرها.
