A treat, as all Vonnegut works are. A powerful moral that is relevant now more than ever - that the cure for violent bigotry is to hold the mirror up to the perpetrator, revealing their own clownishness.
Obviously Vonnegut was most masterful in the novel form, but this play script is a good attempt. The introduction is a really interesting description of how it developed through being performed. Unfortunately it feels like it’s still feeling its way and hasn’t quite matured yet. There’s a feeling of the naive ‘60s about it. Some of his message feels more obvious now than it must have done then.
But it is lots of fun. Harold bursts into civilisation like a comic book character. Looseleaf is all confused loyalty, and comments on the changes in society which the 60s brought. Woodly feels like a self-insert character, but, being Vonnegut, fun is being gently poked at him, too. And I am sure it is deliberate that the only sensible, admirable character is the only woman in the main cast (there is a sort of ghost subplot).
I would love to see this staged and it looks like it would be lots of fun to perform in. It is a bit simplistic, the ending’s not as strong as the rest, but Vonnegut has good points to make, as ever, and makes them with humour and goodwill, as ever.
Brimming with sadness and truth, peppered with humor...would be quite interesting to see performed on the stage. The first Wanda June monologue, as well as the dialogue between Wanda June and Von Konigswald detailing their club are especially poignant.
This is the first Kurt Vonnegut anything I'm reading and I was definitely not disappointed. He reminded me of Woody Allen's works, especially his plays .I am definitely definitely reading all his works now. I .loved. this. Period.
I am rarely a fan of farce in place of a plot line. Whatever blatant political points Vonnegut was trying to make here they largely get drowned out by the dull and disorientating attempt at story telling. Script writing is clearly not his forte, and this would be disappointing by any standard, but compared to what Vonnegut is capable of this is a real shame and best avoided.
