This collection of poetry is flawless, just like Maya herself. I’m a little biased, as she’s one of my favorite writers ever, but her humanity and words shine like never before in this collection. It’s clear that Maya’s themes of race, sex, religion, class, and nationality are always at the forefront of her mind. She was a trailblazer for her ideas and for how she conveyed those to the people in and outside of her community. I always get a little jealous when I read her stuff because I wish I could write something so precise, eloquent, and heartfelt. Every word, pause, and punctuation means something in a Maya Angelou poem or story. I could almost hear her reading them too as I was I reading in my mind. What a powerhouse!
Some of my favorites are Phenomenal Woman, Still I Rise, Weekend Glory, Human Family, In and Out of Time, The Lesson, Senses of Insecurity, Alone, and so many more. They’re all honestly amazing. Find me a poet who has so much sass, brass, class, and a whole lot of… well you know the rest. Maya knows the human soul because she’s willing to bare her entire soul. She’s been through life and it shows in her work. These poems ooze the troubles and tribulations of a hardworking Black American woman trying to find herself in the 20th century. I have so much respect for her journey and these poems. And please know, I’m not even a huge poetry person, but these are so great I would highly recommend to anyone who loves the human spirit and the written word.
