The first shocker was that the movie was nothing like the book. Absolutely nothing. But, weirdly, I liked the book and the movie equally because the essence in both stayed the same. A common enough problem faced by a majority of people (especially me) dealt in a very funny way. What's not to like?
(Oh, and by common, I mean the getting addicted to something part, not the being buried in a ton of debt aspect)

I loved the snarky humor and the heroine Becky was balanced on a very thin line between endearing and annoying, but managed never to cross over, giving a pleasant, bumbling feel to the book. The romance part was so out-of-the-world, that it was almost believable.

All in all, It was a nice pick-me-up, that got me through a stressful couple of days!

Okay so I have a rough system where I read one difficult book and then one easy book. Like a child abuse memoir then an Emily Henry romance, I have to balance it out.

So you’d think this book would be the easy book, right? WRONG I am shaking with anxiety. The girl has a problem with overspending and she’s overdrawn all her credit card accounts and it is literally my worst nightmare helpppp. This book made me realize I have some sort of deep rooted fear of overspending.

The whole book I was doing the equivalent of dad screaming at the TV during a football game. WHAT AN IDIOT! SOMEBODY FIRE THEM! This legitimately stressed me out so much to read.

This is my first time reading a book written by Sophie Kinsella.

"The great thing about you, Rebecca, is you've got the common touch. We see you as finance guru meets girl next door. Informative but approachable. Knowledgeable but down-to-earth. The financial expert people really want to talk to" (pg. 279).

Sophie's writing is very entertaining and humorous. I laughed out loud more than once! This book has a fresh voice. I enjoyed this story being told in a first-person narrative, seeing life through Rebecca Bloomwood's eyes. I thought the personal letters from the bank was a nice touch!

In "Confessions of a Shopaholic," Rebecca Bloomwood works as a financial journalist for "Successful Saving", a money magazine but she is struggling personally with debt and managing her finances. She has a "fake it till you make it' outlook on her job and doesn't take her articles or work responsibilities seriously (doodling in her notepad during work events).

As a reader, you are inside the mind of a shopaholic who convinces herself that an expensive purchase is considered an investment, her attempts at staying clean and not spending - just to fall off the wagon, screening calls (or answering in a foreign accent) from debt collectors and bank managers, having her card publicly declined, making up bad excuses (even bringing her fictitious Aunt Ermintrude into this!), how empty this addiction leaves Rebecca.... and ultimately her sinking to rock bottom.

"I've plunged to the lowest ebb of my life. What have I got going for me? Nothing. Not one thing. I can't control my money, I can't do my job, and I haven't got a boyfriend. I've hurt my best friend, I've lied to my parents - and now I've ruined my neighbors" (pg.224).

Rebecca is inspired by the scandal surrounding Flagstaff Life to debate Luke Brandon on a morning show on national TV which consequently opens a new career opportunity, money to pay off her debts and adds a new romance in her life.

I thought in the book that Rebecca took too long in figuring out her situation and moving in a positive direction for redemption and change. It's on page 286 of 312 where she has an epiphany that she needs to grow up and to stop running away and regain control of shopping temptations.

The book is rated R, primarily for language.

"We all fail to appreciate each day just how much we already possess. Light, air, freedom, the companionship of friends... I mean, these are things that matter, aren't they?" (pg. 71).

Is the Book "Confessions of a Shopaholic" better than the Movie version?

Like every light and fluffy book that I pick up I except to love it! I had watched the movie a few years back and absolutely loved it! I was so excited to read the book! However I did not consider that the story line would be completely different. This is really what killed it for me.

The book starts off with a few letters our main character Becky receives from the bank. Saying that she needs to contact the bank managers assistant as her bill is skyrocketing.

You can tell when you read the letters that Becky has managed to make-up excuses for not calling the assistant. For instance 'she broke her leg'. Now the interesting part of this novel is that Becky actually does have a job (she's been working there for 3 years). She just has no idea what she's doing. It's amazing how none of her co-workers have caught on to that. Bearing this in mind readers assume that yes while her job doesn't pay that much she simply keeps on spending rather than paying her debt.

It was different in the movie. She was actually job hunting. She does get a job but I guess because she was just starting out it didn't pay that much. And like the book she spent rather than saving.

The only reason I didn't enjoy this book is because I liked the movie more. And why does this series need 8 books? I felt like that would just drag rather than be entertaining. Bearing this in mind I couldn't bring myself to continue.

I did still enjoy some of it though (hence the 2 star rating). The relationship between Suze (her roommate) was really sweet! Luke was also nice to read about. And some of her adventures were hilarious! Unfortunately this wasn't enough to keep me interested in continuing it.

Overall it wasn't that good but not terrible. I recommend this to fans of the author and comedy.

As a Shopaholic myself, I found this book really enjoyable. If you like shopping at all, this book will make you laugh. The main character gets into funny situations constantly. It's not an advanced physics treatise, but it's not mindless either. The effort the main character goes to to justify her shopping is hilarious and some genius plotting on Kinsella's part. If you don't like shopping at all, look elsewhere. If you like funny, memorable characters and plots, then give this a try.

A friend of mine doesn't want to read this book because she thinks it will make her feel bad about her shopping habits. Trust me, the main character is worse than you could ever be. So don't count it out because you think it might expose you.

I am happy to report that I saw the author speak, and she is delightful, nice, funny, and deserving of your book purchase!

This book was super cute...Becky's "justifications" for all her purchases made me laugh! I also now feel a strangely intense desire to go shopping :P

Main character gets a few lucky breaks so she can continue pulling the same immature shit as she did at the beginning of the book and learns absolute fuckall in the process.

I was in the library when I walked by this book, while I was looking for another book. I pulled it off the shelf and because I've found and read some pretty amazing book with this randomness, I thought ok. Another reason I have become a little obsessed with shopping on ebay. I thought this girl book would be fun, it would be like a new girl friend, getting to now good and bad about her, how she thinks about life........... So, I checked it out and I read it in about 6 hours. Reason it sucked:

1. The main charter was English so I didn't relate the stores that she was bragging about shopping at and it didn't have the SAME"sex in the city" LUSTFUL MATERIALISTIC effect on me . So, her prideful continuous description of these clothes she "owned" and was in debt for became ridiculous. And her constant shopping while in debt, actually started to physically stress me out.

2. Half way into the book I felt really sad because I know that there is so many people who this is their reality. This shallow mindset or consumption of caffeine, sugar, shopping, "fashion"..... the constant carve of distraction and never learning to deal. It just seemed to glorify being shallow and reinforce that if and when you are you should keep on being so because:

3. The modern day fairy tale ending for could happen. Debt paid off, get the job you want, they guy, the clothes, the romance, the money, the fame..... It grasps on the the romantic notion of what life should be, and could be. It seem to encourage that there is nothing wrong with lying to yourself and others.

4. It reminds of humans I know, who choose to lead the most dramatic, self indulged, objectified, diva lifestyle. Where they are the most important and beautiful person on the planet, and you'll regret being not trying to be their best friend (a.k.a. letting them use you) when they are Famous and rich one day. I think this book glamorize this attitude, and not matter how you dress that up, there is nothing glamorous about that.

All and All I HAETED this book and wished I hadn't read the it. And if I could give a negative star I would. But I know this is not a hateful website.
