I usually love anything that Sophie Kinsella writes, but with the Shopaholic series I was seriously disappointed. Writing in first person / present tense is a great way to get the reader to 'come along for the ride' but with Becky Bloomwood, Kinsella has put us in the head of one of the shallowest, most self-serving and dishonest characters I've ever encountered who wasn't (supposed to be) the bad guy. She lies to the people who love and trust her and glibly dismisses their feelings with almost no sense of remorse. I persevered, hoping that the story, or rather character would improve - my friend lent me the whole series otherwise I would have stopped at the first one - and ended up hoping that someone would finally make her pay for her many deceits. I'm supposing that Kinsella dealt with a very timely and relevant issue with the first book in this series, and it was such a success that her publishers demanded more of the same. With all of her other books I found her characters to be likeable in spite of their flaws, and wanted them to do well. That's what this genre is usually all about, no? But I just found Becky to be too odious to have any empathy for.
