There comes a point where instead of discounting memory techniques you actually decide to properly give them a go because the alternative is to be a vegetable by age 35 and mumbling away in an effort to recall your name.

Harry Lorayne is often praised in the magic and mentalism communities for his magic memory work so that's one hell of an endorsement if you ask me given these are industries so reliant on memory. Lorayne covers many techniques in the tiny book including the Peg technique and the Link technique. Do they work? Shoe, Pen, Book, Airplane, Eyeglasses, Fish, Benadryl and Typewriter. That was the first list I learned 4 days ago and they are still vividly in my mind. The old me would have said "But when do I ever need to remember a bunch of random nouns?" but the new me is determined to use the techniques moving forward.

The way I see it - you don't remember anything if you don't try and if you can't be bothered putting in the time to learn new techniques and put them into practice then your apathy is probably a reason why your memory is so rubbish. And when I say 'you', I mean me. My memory will only prove if I start actively exercising it. Here goes nothing.....

Memory tricks, memory tricks, and more memory tricks. It's really fun to use some of the tricks in the book, and they work. The only problem is that once you stop practicing the techniques outlined in the book, within a week your memory goes back to that thing. What's the word. That thing before. Where your brain used to be. Previously. Ahh, see? Previously. That's the one. Nap time.

An easy-to-read, yet very practical book that can work wonders for you if you try to practice what it preaches. The author brings you through step-by-step in a fun and casual manner, which makes learning the methods a breeze.

fun read. Some of the techniques are quite good, specifically with names and numbers.

I learned some great memory tricks that have really helped me remember names better and lists. Once you learn the techniques you'll start applying to your life. You must try to use it every day, or like most things involving memory you'll lose it. It may seem difficult at first, but after trying it a few times it will get easier and easier. A co-worker of mine tried to test my skills and made up a list of 30 completely random words. Some were objects, some were foreign words, and others were people's names. I had to spend an hour working my way thru the techniques because I had just learned the techniques, but once I was finished I was amazing. I could recite the list forward and backwards correctly or at most missing one. I was also able to give him the the word at any point in the list. Example: he would call out a number between 1 and 30 and I would respond with the appropriate word in the corresponding spot. What is even more amazing is that I let him keep his list and I was able to recite the list with the same results for the next 6 weeks! I only had to remember the first object, and I would quickly review the list in my head occasionally before I went to bed or when I woke up in the morning.

I think there are several other memory books out there, but I haven't read them. From what I was able to search on the internet it seems like all them teach you the same type of techniques. The big difference is this book leaves out the reason why it works and just tells you the quick and dirty way to get your memory working for you. One thing to note is that the techniques used are for short/mid-term memory. For something to become long term you'll have to continue reviewing what you've memorized until it gets locked in the long-term memory.

Our brain and memory works in an associative manner. Author of this book stresses upon this point and gives good tools to create a associations for everything that we will like to remember.H is consiciously driving the reader to make associations and explaining the fact that "applying your mind" to something essentially means creating association.

I applied these techniques and found my joy in remembering new things and programming my mind.

actually I couldn't imagine that I would benefit from such a book like that a totally new experience, a very simple book and to the point providing you with tips you need to improve your memory and concentration it really changed my perspective about "is it possible to improve my memory with only a book?!". at the beginning I thought its all about brain activity but I found out that memory and concentration can be improved by simple strategies. I highly advice whoever is reading the book to use his/her imagination it a critical factor in benefiting from the book.

It's a nice introduction to memory techniques and I like his hands-on approach. He introduces Word Substitute method, link system, major system (although he never calls it that), peg system (he's using a different approach than the one I'm used to, instead of rhyming (one is a gun, two is a shoe, three is a tree and so on) he is using Major system for pegs, so for example one is Tie because t=1; two is Noah, because n=2, although I've changed Noah to Neo, and so on.) There are great bonuses at the end and I really liked "elevator system" for adding up numbers. There are also techniques that help you memorize faces, names, dates and foreign words. All these are very practical, and you just need to use them to see how effective they are.
It seems that there is no place for memory palaces in Harry Lorayne world, and that is fascinating. I didn't really like his method of memorizing cards because PAO (Person-Action-Object) system seems way easier and more natural to me. But chacun a son gout.
Look up a great interview "Greatest Memory Expert of 20th Century, Harry Lorayne" on Ron White YouTube channel.

This is very similar in- content and structure - to "Use your memory" by Tony Buzan (first edition of Page-A-Minute Memory Book - 1985, first edition of "Use Your Memory" - 2003, but it is based on an older book by the same author - "Use your Perfect Memory" which was published in 1984... ) ... In my opinion "Use your memory" is slightly better organized but Page-A-Minute exemplifies more. Both are useful if applied.

Small, simple book with impact. I effectively learned my card with bank codes by heart with these techniques. Fun stuff.
