I love this book, like the others, but it's got some issues. You see a little more of certain characters, but aside from Kurda (who is great, to be fair) there's very little characterisation going on. Characters, as well as the worldbuilding, just go on from what we got in the previous book but it's much weaker here, and a lot of the book is devoted to stuff (the titular trials) that gets a little boring. This and the previous books also just go a little crazy with the cliffhangers, these two and the next one really should have been a single volume together.
There are twelve books in the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan and I read my way through all of them in about three weeks as a child! I absolutely loved them and was totally immersed in the world created by Darren Shan from the get go. October is just the perfect time to re-read them all! Especially when I have access to all the audio books.
This series is everything I remember. Creepy, full of gore and suspense, leaving you wanting more! All the characters are incredibly unique and developed. The story as a whole is different from comparison novels and you can tell with each book that there is much more of a story to come. Shan has written the books whilst planning ahead. Small details that suggest further meaning crop up later in the series and it is sheer genius and talent.
There is gore, which I enjoyed immensely. Also, some humour thrown in so it wasn't completely gross and disgusting all the time. It was a nice way to break things up so it didn't feel dark and bleak every step of the way. I was lucky enough to meet the author at Edinburgh Book Festival in 2019 and every sentence on every page of these books oozes his personality, humour and fantastic mind! You are completely immersed into the world of Darren Shan, Mr Crepsley and the Cirque Du Freak with just a few sentences.
I think this series will forever be a favourite of mine! Especially during the spooky season! This book in particular is like the vampire version of the Hunger Games and I love it!
I think this book was awesome. The reason that this book is awesome is because I really like vampires and this book is about vampires. The book is exciting, fun, and interesting. I recommend this book to all the Vampire lovers. By the way the vampires in this book are not evil creatures who suck blood and kill. There are vampires who only drink a little of human blood. READ THE WHOLE SERIES!!!!!!!
These trials and so unfair. Antiquated vampires... Poor Darren! I think there should have been exceptions for a half vampire more so than they gave.
The trials were so vivid I could imagine watching and being there! Enjoyed the first trial with the weight and water. Then the hall of flames was cool, thought he was going to die... Alas he didn't but it didn't do him any favours!
The olot twist in this was rather savvy I genuinely didn't think anything of Kudra doing that and Gavner Purl is a great loss!! How could he!
I like this book because it has a lot of action to make it more exciting. Also it gave a big imagery what the book is about. It made my heart pound like a drum when Darren Shan doing his trials because he going to die of drowning. he was underwater for 22 minutes so being a vampire has a huge advantage than humans.
Readers worry that the main character Darren Shan will die because Darren hints throughout the book that he will need to fight for his life. For instance he says, “I never thought I would be fighting for my life.” The reader is hoping Darren will be able to escape Kurda, but the only way he can do this is by running and hiding. The readers know that Kurda is not a good person because he kills someone that everyone in the book likes. However, Mr. Crepsley and Arra do not know, so we kind of sense that they’re in danger. Readers feel worried about Darren because we learn that a lot of his friends died, we get to hear his thoughts and what he thinks about his friends dying.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy paranormal stories, specifically stories with vampires and werewolves. because it’s a really good book and I think they should read it because in the book it makes you attached to the characters. People who are more into realistic standards may not like this book because it’s a fantasy book.
This is the best book ever! Another cirque du freak book has hit a home run and has baffled me again. Well Darren is now being put to tests of mental and fiscal hard ship to prove to be a true vampire but if he messes up well something will happen. So guess what he fails! So forced to run away he is signing up to the biggest challenge of all. So this book is a fast pace book that has the most realistic feeling to me. I love how I feel like I can gust just jump in the book and talk to Darren and he will under stand me if he survives the hall of death!
