❤️ Gotta love it when your 13 year old says, "It just didn't challenge me much but it was a decent book."

Books are like truth serum-- if you don't read, you can't figure out what's real.

To think that a book this short could be so uplifting and heartbreaking.

I would recommend this book because there is descriptive language, and medieval parts of the book and cool action. I think that this book has great language description for example, “Sulfuric acid.” “Good old H2SO4 oily, colorless and corrosive liquid,” on page 132. Page 16 has good language. Freak said “My mom’s name is Gwen, so sometimes I call her Fair Guinevere or the Fair Gwen. King Arthur was the first king of England.

The second reason I would recommend this book is because it has a lot of medieval references in this book such as “A dragon is fear of the natural world,” on page 45. “Arther’s magical sword is called Excalibur, and the Fair Guinevere is the pretty girl who becomes his queen.”

If you like action books then I definitely recommend this book for you and the page is 155. “Then I’m running down the hallway and it’s like I’m kicker again, ready to blast through everybody who dares to touch me. I just keep running and running in till I get to these glass doors. The doors are locked and its dark inside. My final reason is located on page 38. “Can you move?” Freak says. “I don’t think so.” More splashes as the rocks fall short. Pretty soon they had smartened up, Blade says, “smaller rocks, get smaller rocks!” I hope you enjoy reading this book like I did.

It may not be a new title, but still packs a punch. Loved this sensitive story of two unlikely friends. Would be a great read out loud with your kids. Lots of topics for discussion.

This is a lovely, offbeat book about the unlikely friendship between two boys who seem to share nothing in common. Max is very big for his age, and thinks he isn't very smart, while Kevin has a birth defect that causes him to stay very small. He's also brilliant! The two team up, Max carrying Kevin on his shoulders, and become Freak the Mighty, going on quests to assist those in need and living life to its fullest in every adventure. The story is told from Max's point of view, and we learn all about his grandparents, his mother who's passed away, and his father, Killer Kane, who's in prison. Through Max we experience all over again the agony of being young and different, and the joy of finding a kindred spirit. This book was a fantastic read!

This book was one of the first books I ever read properly, it was a book that made me want to read a lot more. The storyline of this book, is gripping and so heartfelt. I couldn’t put the book down, It had me happy then sad then happy then crying again. The ending broke my heart but will always be a book I read again and again.

The book wasn't a great book, but it wasn't the worst book ever. This is a book that I wouldn't choose to read, but I would read it. I would recommend this book to people who are just looking for a book to read and don't care what they get.

I liked this book because it is very interesting and a lot of good and surprising things happen throughout. I don't think there was ever a point where I was bored of it.

Another book I pre read before my 7th grade son's language arts class reads it. And another one I was less than thrilled with. First, the constant negative talk! Preteen and teenage kids have a hard enough time with their self-esteem, but to read a book where one of the main characters is constantly calling himself dumb and stupid and a butthead - really is that helpful? The remembrance of how his mother died was rough to read - as Max remembered it so vividly. And the subsequent attacks on Loretta and Max as well. Overall what bothered me the most was the total negativity and rudeness of the talking to others and about himself. Not a book I'd have ever picked to read myself and not one I'd reread.

This is a fun book, and the kids love it (I teach junior high and cover this book every year). It's the story of an unlikely friendship between a very small boy with health problems and a short life span, and a very large boy whose childhood has been pretty rough. There is a little bit of language that might deter some teachers, but I've found that the kids can get past it for the story. There are a lot of fun adventures, some great lessons, and some tough issues that the boys go through together, and my students have always seemed to relate to them on some level. I highly recommend this book for the junior high age kid.
