Audiobook listen 2022

Now the reason I have this separate to my "book" read of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILES is simply because I think it should be :- Whilst based on Sir ACD's version this has many extra added bits and is credited to two more authors who have written their own Holmes novels and stories.

Lets be clear, this is NOT narrated by Stephen Fry, it is a full dramatised version of the story with Stephen Fry as Dr Watson (excellent). Free on "Audible" if you are a member it is more than worth a listen.

Full review to follow when I finish listening to it.

My second time reading this story and I still felt the chill and goosebumps. It helped that since I last read it three years ago, I had forgotten some of the particular details of the story and hence, every new revelation was as new to me as when I read it the first time around.

Arthur Conan Doyle combines the mystery, bleakness, horror and danger of the moorland and the Grimpen Mire within it, the fear and terror of the dreaded Hound of the legend of Baskerville, and a murder to create one of the most original detective stories.

I first read The Hound of the Baskervilles when I was about ten years old. It was both a fascinating and scary read for me at that time. I remember imagining that a large fierce hound might appear in our backyard at night and being uneasy about it! :) Almost thirty years later I find it more fascinating since I have outgrown my fear. :) And also, this time around I could appreciate the genius mind and brilliant power of observation and deduction of Sherlock Holmes. Out of all the Sherlock Holmes books that I have read so far, this is where Sherlock Holmes shines the brightest.

The mystery around the hound has always fascinated me, although I now know very well what it is. I love how Holmes unravels the mystery and how he lay out the plan to catch this "devil" of a beast using a human "bait". To me, this is the climax of the story where suspense and action are at their height.

The scientific element that is involved in this mystery has captured my interest from my childhood. I remember being thoroughly fascinated by the use of phosphorus to cover the muzzle of the hound, and thinking that it was such a fine idea. :)

I love this and enjoy it very much every time I read it. And even though I know the story, it doesn't impede my enjoyment of this beautiful mystery in any way. No matter how many times I might read this in the future, I know that each reading will feel like a fresh reading for me. And that is exactly why this murder mystery is the only one to have graced my favourite shelf.

_The Hound of the Baskervilles_ is probably one of the more famous cases of Sherlock Holmes and is also one of only four novel-length treatments of the cases of the great detective. It’s a solid story and is perhaps primarily of interest in the apparently supernatural element which lies at the heart of the case. Indeed this element of the tale, along with its ultimate resolution, is very interesting when viewed in the light of Doyle’s subsequent conversion to spiritualism and when looked at from this angle the numerous comments in the story about the credulous peasants who give credence to the supernatural gain a somewhat ironic lustre.

I do think, however, that the story was far from the strongest of Doyle’s outings with his most famous creation. Its main failing lies primarily in the fact that the real draw of all of these stories is largely absent for the bulk of it: Sherlock Holmes himself. I wonder whether Conan Doyle was trying to keep his distance from the creation whose popularity he had begun to view with a growing ambivalence? As it is we do have the opportunity to see Watson acting on his own as Holmes’ agent which is of some interest, but I’m afraid that he doesn’t hold a candle to his confederate as a fully compelling character study. Stolid and not without resources as an investigator he may be, but there really is no substitute to the biting commentary and unique perspective of Holmes himself.

I will avoid giving much of a plot outline, since it’s probably either already known or not desired due to the possibility of spoilers in the case. Suffice it to say that an apparently insoluble death leads our intrepid team to the foggy moors of England’s West Country where they not only hope to solve one death, but also to prevent another. Doyle goes all out in peppering the trail with utterly ambiguous clues and numerous strands and false leads until things can be brought to their ultimate and satisfying conclusion. I did learn one interesting tidbit: apparently as far as Dr. Watson is concerned it's ok to let an insane psychopath go free as long as he will leave England and only be a burden and a danger to the people of South America. Nice one, doc.

It's time once again for me to return to Dartmoor, to the Great Grimpen Mire & to Baskerville Hall. This time I'm reading the 100th anniversary edition with illustrations by the great Sidney Paget.
However, my previous review still says it all...
I have loved Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories since I was a child & am still amazed at how good they are, even more than a 100 years after they were first written. While I do enjoy the four novels Conan Doyle wrote I think that the short stories are far more entertaining. I don't really think he made a great novelist, but his short fiction is superb. The Hound Of The Baskervilles is my favourire of his four novels, & my only real critisim of the story is that Holmes is missing for far too much of the plot. However, this tale has great characters, a great plot & I love its superb setting on Dartmoor. Usually I would give this book a four star review, but I've given it five this time as I read it while staying at a hotel on Dartmoor! I live in Exeter, which is only about 25 miles from the moor but it was well worth an overnight stay. I enountered no evil presence while staying there, but I thought I saw something strange this morning........they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!

My first audio book finished, and what a great adventure it was! I suppose it was guaranteed to be good with Stephen Fry narrating. Not only was this my first audio book, but also my first Sherlock Holmes one, and indeed listening to this got me into the Sherlock Holmes show so now I am on the Sherlock bandwagon and as big a fan as everyone else now.

I loved the epic scope of this story, the novel is broken up into two parts and both were extremely well done, I never thought a Sherlock Holmes book would make me misty eyed! My only quibble was that the second part was rather jarring and I was a little confused for a while, it really just throws you into another story.

Apart from that this was great fun and made the mundane task of doing the dishes and vacuuming the floors much more bearable. Highly recommend this audio book, it's a steal if you use it for your free credit at audible.

I’m not sure if I want to write a full review. It was so meh! I’ll think about it but for now I’ll just leave it a steady 3 maybe 2.5.
