Not my favorite, too much Miami Vice in the Highlands. Drug Lords, seamy big town crime. Not my cuppa.

5/8/22 - Still really love this one! And now I'm taking a break from my headlong hurtle through Hamish Macbeth re-read (re-listen?), but will be back shortly! Love him!

One of my favorites of the series! Hamish has to go undercover twice and gets his cover blown with near-deadly repercussions - it's a very exciting and different installment that has Hamish away from Lochdubh and all the usual suspects there and investigating the drug underground.

Very Dark. Not the usual light read.

Ce tome, écrit par M.C. Beaton, s’inscrit parfaitement dans le genre policier cosy pour lequel l’auteur est si réputé. L’intrigue, riche en suspense, tient le lecteur en haleine, même si l’identité du coupable devient assez prévisible vers la fin.

Les personnages sont bien construits, en particulier Hamish et Olivia, dont la relation complexe apporte une profondeur intéressante au récit. Cependant, la fin concernant Olivia laisse un goût amer et suscite de nombreuses émotions.

La demande en mariage de Hamish surprend, tout comme le fait qu’il conserve une photo de Priscilla alors qu’il entretient une relation ambiguë avec Olivia. Ces éléments ajoutent une certaine tension, mais interrogent sur les choix du personnage.

La plume fluide de M.C. Beaton rend la lecture agréable et immersive. J’ai désormais hâte de découvrir les prochains tomes pour voir comment les événements et les relations évolueront.

An entertaining "who dunnit." Once again Hamish tries mixing work and romance while trying to solve a murder.

So, with the Hamish Macbeth series, my review is the same. Good, cozy read with some great extra detail. These mysteries are not going to break your brain, but they provide a nice break from heavier reading and a fun, predictable storyline. I only like cozy mysteries, so I am biased. If you like a deeper, more psychological thriller, this is definitely not it. Overall, I'm happy with this series and can truly reccomend for someone with similar tastes.

Another very pleasant read in the Hamish Macbeth mystery series. I am thoroughly enjoying the series.

Hamish Macbeth #15 is quite a departure from the previous Hamish books. I enjoyed the new character, Olivia, who is actually his superior officer, and someone different than old Priscilla as a love interest. I didn't care much for all the drug dealing plot but it was an interesting adventure in the Scottish Highlands once more!

Der kleine Ort Lochdubh in den schottischen Highlands wird von einem Todesfall überschattet. Tommy Jarret, der eines der Ferienhäuser von Parry MacSporran gemietet hat, wird tot aufgefunden. Weil Tommy eine bewegte Drogenvergangenheit hat, geht die Polizei von einer Überdosis aus. Hamish Macbeth glaubt nicht daran. Er hat den jungen Mann kurz vor dessen Tod kennengelernt und kann sich nicht vorstellen, dass er wieder rückfällig geworden ist. Auch Tommys Eltern sind der gleichen Meinung und bitten Hamish um seine Hilfe. Weil der Fall schon abgeschlossen ist, ermittelt er auf eigene Faust.

Hamish Macbeth ist ein einfacher Polizist aus einem schottischen Dorf mit einem ungewöhnlichen Gespür für Verbrechen. Auch hier trügt ihn sein Instinkt nicht, allerdings zieht der Fall weitere Kreise, als er sich vorstellen kann. Als Hamish für die Ermittlungen sein kleines Dorf verlassen muss, tappt er in die eine oder andere Falle, aus der er sich aber immer schnell befreien kann.

M.C. Beaton spielt mit allen Vorurteilen, die man den Highlands und deren Bewohnern gegenüber hat: die Landschaft ist schön, wenn es auch manchmal regnet (natürlich nicht so viel, wie die Lowlander immer denken), die Menschen sind einfach gestrickt (auch Hamish), aber freundlich. Jeder hat seine kleine Schafherde hinterm Haus und die Verbrechen sind dieselben wie in der großen Stadt, aber irgendwie nicht ganz so schlimm wie dort. Nichts Großartiges, aber nette Unterhaltung für zwischendurch.

Unlike other Hamish novels in that he gets involved with a fellow police officer, Inspector Olivia Chater, and has a torrid love affair with her and ends up proposing marriage, which she rejects. He also has a one-night stand with a prostitute whom he had assumed to be a college student. In previous Hamish novels he was a straight-laced unambitious policeman who preferred to keep the peace rather than enforce the law to the letter. This was a surprising departure.

The story line itself is about infiltrating a drug ring to find the murderer of a young man who had been an addict but was reformed. There are some action scenes about dealing with the members of the drug ring, but the main plot really is about Hamish and Olivia and how their relationship develops from being police partners to lovers.

Mild story line not much to it really.
