With all the fuss about Agatha Raisin, I had to borrow the first instalment of Hamish MacBeth to see what it was all about.
I must say I wasn't convinced by Death of a gossip. It read easily enough, but it wasn't great, just superficial. Somebody who wants to write like Agatha Christie but doesn't have her talent. Apparently though, those novels do please my readers !
I also tried watching the tv-show, hoping it would be better (with Robert Carlyle and great landscapes), it was nice but not great. I had forgotten the Scottish accent was so hard to understand, lol !

Cute story by one of my fav authors. Hamish Macbeth is a simple policeman in a simple Scottish village. He reads people while quietly finding the answers. He isn't overly handsome but is unassuming and pleasant.

Great character. Very funny dialogue with the red haired Constable Hamish Macbeth. A murder takes place with the horrible Lady Jane strangled and in a pool of water. Who did it? Everyone loathed her in the holiday group of fishermen with her poisonous gossip and innuendo.

The location in the Scottish Highlands beside a loch is excellent. The laconic intelligent Hamish is a wonderful character with his eccentricities.

I look forward to the next one.

И первая же книга про Хэмиша Макбета позволила сделать вывод, что общего между двумя упомянутыми авторами на деле не так много, как можно было себе вообразить. Действительно, обе дамы пишут детективы, где - в случае данных конкретных серий про Эвана Эванса и Хэмиша Макбета - главным героем является деревенский полицейский, проживающий где-то в глуши и мастерски распутывающий преступления. А вот всё остальное уже отличается, начиная от сеттинга и заканчивая авторским стилем.
Хэмиш Макбет, как можно догадаться исходя из его имени, живёт в Шотландии среди гор и озёр. Деревня у него, судя по всему, небольшая и тихая, поэтому работы не так много - в итоге он разводит кур, возделывает огород и рыбачит, а ещё очень любит получать всякие плюшки на халяву - кофе, бутерброды, телефонные звонки. Пожалуй, это едва ли не вся информация, которую мы узнаём о нём из первой половины книги. Потому что книга построена довольно забавно: у неё одна из самых длинных завязок, которые я когда-либо встречала. Первую половину книги мы знакомимся с основными действующими лицами, причём полицейский Макбет появляется в тексте лишь эпизодически; основное действие завязано вокруг школы рыболовов, её владельцев и приехавших на обучение слушателей. Что-то здесь есть от "Десяти негритят", потому что фактически в относительно замкнутом пространстве здесь собирается десять персонажей, у каждого из которых есть какой-то скелет в шкафу. С той лишь разницей, что, в отличие от романа Агаты Кристи, трупом здесь становится только один человек, и это как раз тот, кто подходит на эту роль больше всего.
Убийство происходит только в середине книги, и вот тут на передний план наконец выступает Хэмиш Макбет. Помимо него, здесь, опять же, традиционно есть полицейские из управления, которые настоятельно советуют ему не совать нос не в своё дело, а в итоге садятся в лужу (пожалуй, такой вариант развития событий с самого начала не вызывал сомнений). Опять же, что характерно для классических детективов, подозревать можно любого из героев, потому что мотив и возможность совершить своё чёрное дело были у каждого. На самом деле, такие вещи здорово тренируют внимательность: если в начале думаешь, зачем автор так подробно описывает, кто как был одет в каждый из дней, когда разворачивалось действие, то, когда натыкаешься на очередную улику, немного жалеешь, что не читал вдумчивее.
И да, классический детективный ход, когда главный герой собирает всех подозреваемых в комнате и называет убийцу, тут тоже есть. И это даже в чём-то мило. И убийца, как водится, не тот, на кого можно было бы подумать с самого начала - это тоже классика.
В самом тексте много описаний природы, да и не только - книга в целом богата на разного рода описания, что определённо делает повествование ярче. Очень много внимания уделено рыболовной теме (в такие моменты радуешься, что в читалке есть встроенный толковый словарь - это реально помогало хотя бы минимально разобраться, о чём вообще речь, потому что специфической лексики в этих эпизодах хватает). И очень здорово прописаны образы персонажей не только в плане каких-то внешних черт, но и в речевом аспекте: местные жители говорят с шотландским акцентом (графически это передаётся так забавно, что временами, читая, приходилось проговаривать про себя целые фразы, чтобы понять, какое слово имелось в виду под тем или иным набором букв), американцы, понятное дело, на америкене, и это понятно и логично, но здесь можно наблюдать даже классовое разграничение - герои, принадлежащие к аристократическим кругам, разговаривают не так, как, к примеру, секретарша родом из Ливерпуля. За этим было интересно наблюдать.
Ну и шотландская атмосфера, безусловно, порадовала. С учётом того, что лично я знаю не так уж много книг с таким сеттингом, будет интересно почитать и другие книги серии, благо, их там много.

This was an enjoyable read. This is the first book of the Hamish Macbeth series. In this book, Hamish Macbeth has to find the person who strangled and drowned tabloid reporter, Jane Winters. She was a widow and she reveal too many other people’s secrets. I thought the story was fun and quick. I thought the idea of having a cozy mystery with a male character was also something different for me. I thought Hamish was a great character. He is mysterious, but I kinda of would like to know more about him. He is described as bumbling, and lazy. However, as I kept reading, I thought he was observant and skilled at his job. I thought this is a great start to my first cozy mystery with a male main character. The ending was great. I am looking forward to see how the series goes. I am excited to read book 2. Death of a Cad, here I come. Overall, a great read.

I wanted to try out this series because I knew they had a large fan base, but I just didn't like the writing style. I didn't particularly like the MC Hamish Macbeth either.

Audiobook, British country police story. Hamish Macbeth is a police constable in a sleepy Scottish fishing village. A group of people are thrown together with a murderous outcome.
Written in the mid-80s there were only a few times I cringed at things that were dated in terms of today’s writing. I really enjoyed this relaxing cozy story. I’ll continue reading the series.

Rounding up. Liked it alot. The characters/suspects were quirky. The protagonist was very endearing. The solution was rather puzzling to me. I didn't quite understand it and how it all added up/came together.

Cosy mysteries like this one are go-to reads for me. I've read the first Agatha Raisin book twice before, and I thought I would try the first Hamish Macbeth book.

It was an entertaining read, very light, and I read it in one sitting. There were some funny quirky characters and some moments that made me chuckle.

I do like Hamish a lot, I find him endearing and amusing, and he seems to have a sense of wisdom about him. The ending made me smile.

Voilà un roman policier qui aurait pu être charmant si l’intrigue avait été mieux ficelée ... je sais bien qu’un cozy-mystery ne brille pas forcément par son intrigue mais tout de même, je m’attendais à mieux de ce côté-là. Hamish Macbeth est un personnage attachant qui mérite lui aussi de pouvoir démonter ses talents d’enquêteur . Espérons que ce sera le cas pour la suite de la série mais ce premier tome aura un peu refroidi mon enthousiasme ...

Après avoir lu et apprécié le premier tome d'Agatha Raisin, j'étais contente de découvrir cette série qui se situe dans les Highlands, mais les personnages sont assez creux, leurs réactions très stéréotypées et le tout met beaucoup de temps à décoller... (un roman policier où on attend encore le crime à la page 100 alors qu'il y en a 250, c'est longuet...).
A la fin, j'ai finalement été prise d'affection pour Hamish (qu'on ne voit pas beaucoup au début de l'histoire !) et j'ai le 2e tome à lire, pour voir si ça s'améliore avec le temps !

This book was terrible. I am shocked to find the author is 'award winning' and that others gave this book three star and better ratings.

The plot and character developments are childish and poorly developed. I found much of the character behavior to be so unnatural, it was distracting. The author weakly developed the story of this 'whodunnit' with an over-done group-reveal finale that was anticlimactic primarily because it was contrived and all the characters were so superficial and one-dimensional, I did not care.

Were it not for the fact I am behind in my reading challenge, I would have stopped reading the book. Nancy Drew books are written better, which made me wonder if this book was written by a child for children.

This is my first book by this author. And my last.
