ظاهرا داستان‌های اگزوپری طرحی یکسان دارند، سیر و سلوک در تنهایی در آسمان. حالا به این طرح کلی، یک داستان زمینه‌ای که معمولا تلخ هم هست اضافه کنید و با توصیفات شاعرانه از جنس شاعرانه‌های هرمان هسه داستان را ارایش کنید
این داستان هم از قواعد بالا پیروی می‌کند با این تفاوت مشخص که مرز بین گوینده‌ها و بین زیرداستان‌ها در خیلی از موارد بسیار مبهم است

L'auteur écrit de façon lyrique. Dans d'autres de ses livres comme la terre des hommes, cela donne un livre incroyable et poétique. Mais dans courrier sud, il est compliqué de comprendre le message que l'auteur veut faire passer. J'ai eu l'impression de ne pas comprendre l'enchaînement des mots dans une même phrase et de ne pas voir pourquoi certaines phrases en suivaient d'autres.

Pour moi ce n'est pas un livre qui rend compte de la qualité de l'auteur.

J'ai eu l'occasion, en lisant son premier roman, de voir l'origine de quelques motifs obsédants de Saint-Exupéry : les roses, les moutons et, bien sûr, le désert et le vole. Toutefois, en dehors des passages romantiques avec Généviève, les autres moments (sur l'aérodrome) et les dialogues avec les autres pilotes font défaut de la consistance spécifique.

Un livre qui m'a touchée, par le récit de cette solitude en avion, cette communication inexistante avec la terre.
Impossible de le lire sans voir des liens avec le Petit Prince, évidemment.
J'ai seulement été gênée par la façon dont Geneviève (et même les femmes en général) est décrite comme une femme faible, alors qu'elle ne l'est pas du tout.

Je suis un grand amoureux des livres de Saint-Exupéry, mais je dois avouer que celui-ci est celui que je préfère le moins, et de loin.

If I had been someone looking for a novel like Ernest K. Gann’s The High and the Mighty, I would be sorely disappointed. However, since I am reading the same author who wrote about a little prince stranded on a star, I know the book is to be about one who loves the skies in a different way. The novel is divided into three parts: In the brief Part One, readers encounter French pilot Jacques Bernis, who flies a mail plane on a route south to northern Africa and back, sometimes his clients not receiving mail for up to six months. In Part Two, a flashback to the prior two months, Bernis tells of his love affair with a very young woman named Geneviève. And he’s not entirely satisfied with his life on earth, referring to himself as a “sorrowful archangel” (24). In perhaps the author’s subconscious nod to his novel, Le Petit Prince, Bernis says, “Two minutes later, standing on the grass, I felt young, as though put down on some star where life begins anew” (26). Exupéry seems to have used his experience as an aviator for all kinds of miracles and metaphors. In Part Three, Bernis is back in the air. Italicized reports of his progress informs us, on the last pages: n  “Saint-Louis du Sénégal to Toulouse: France-America located east Timeris stop Bullet holes in controls stop Enemy forces in vicinity stop Pilot killed plane smashed stop Proceeding to Dakar” (119-20)n.

There are times when one reads a book for the sheer joy of the words and how they flow together to form sentences and how the sentences rush to form a river of words which carry us to the source.

Southern Mail is such a book and even though the translation isn't perfect, I have to remember this was written and translated in 1933 when English language readers were much more literate than they are today and the meaning of words could be reasoned out. This was a time, in a part of the world where this takes place, when instant communication was not even dreamed of. Information was communicated via telegram once or twice a week. And those telegrams had a sole purpose: to inform the mail station that a plane was coming in with the mail.

The book is a diary of a wanderer; one who sails above us trapped in a cocoon but free as the wind. It is the story of his friend and their mutual friend and the tragedy that surrounds them. It is ultimately a story of lonliness but more intensely, aloneness.

Even though the writing is spectacularly beautiful, even though the story is heart breaking, I only gave it three stars because the pathos dates it, at least for me.

Plus une histoire de vie de de voyages dans son passé et ses attentes que d'avions en fin de compte. Pourquoi voyager loin et haut quand on peut le faire avec des gens ?
On réalise que parfois les vies se croisent seulement au lieu de faire des chemins côte à côte.
Avec toujours le cadre des périples en avion et leur dose de mystère et de secrets, desquels Saint-Exupéry est un très bon conteur.
