Κάθε φορά που διαβάζω ένα βιβλίο του Χένινγκ Μάνκελ έχω την αίσθηση ότι το βιβλίο είναι η αφορμή για να γράψει ο συγγραφέας τους προβληματισμούς του πάνω στην ανθρώπινη φύση και την εξέλιξη της σουηδικής κοινωνίας. Ερχόμενος από μια γενιά που η Σουηδία ήταν ακόμα αγροτική και αναπτυσσόμενη οικονομία, έβλεπε την μετάλλαξή της στην κοινωνία που είναι σήμερα, ευημερούσα και υλιστική. Σε σχέση με πολλές ευρωπαϊκές χώρες, η Σουηδία έχει μια κοινωνία που έχει κοινωνικά αντανακλαστικά, δομές και πρόνοια. Αυτά είναι λοιπόν που σχολιάζει ο Μάνκελ στο βιβλίο Η Πέμπτη Γυναίκα και είναι το χαρακτηριστικό που κάνει τα βιβλία του σταθερή αξία. Η αστυνομική πλοκή είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα (όπως πάντα) αλλά αυτό που με τραβάει στο συγγραφέα αυτόν είναι η μη-ηρωοποίηση του Βαλάντερ (που είναι ένας απόλυτα καθημερινός άνθρωπος με τα προβλήματα που έχουν όλοι, από την εξέλιξη της σχέσης του με την αγαπημένη του, μέχρι το που θα βρει τα λεφτά να αγοράσει καινούργιο αυτοκίνητο), που είναι ανθρώπινος και αληθινός. Επίσης, το γεγονός ότι μιλά για τα προβλήματα της σουηδικής κοινωνίας (έστω και πριν από 20 χρόνια) με ρεαλισμό και ανθρωπιά, κάνει το βιβλίο αυτό όχι μόνο εξαιρετικό αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα αλλά πραγματική λογοτεχνία.

A well written, if not high literature, thriller. A dark, brooding narrative in line with the central character and very readable. It's a police procedural novel; this happened then that happened and so on. Yet it manages to be gripping. The motive behind the killings is given due weight. Even though the characters (more the men than the women) are well drawn, the intentional pacing of the book sometimes only allows for a brief skimming over of important events. Wallander manages to be in three or four different places on one page towards the end. In any case, well worth a read.

Gosto de Henning Mankell. Escreve maravilhosamente bem!

Gosto de Kurt Wallander. Uma personagem de que, tal como me acontece com algumas pessoas, não gostei quando o "conheci", mas ao qual me fui afeiçoando ao longo de seis livros, onde ele se revelou um homem culto, sensível, humano, ...(gosto de homens que choram...).

Gostei da intriga, dos crimes, das vítimas, do criminoso e dos seus motivos para matar...
O início do livro é muito bonito. As páginas sobre o "Poeta dos Pássaros", uma figura solitária e encantadora, são intensas e comoventes:
"Um céu enorme, vibrando de asas, mete-se a caminho da peregrinação. O caminho das aves para Meca.
O que é um homem, comparado com isso? Um velho solitário agarrado à terra? E lá em cima, no alto, um completo céu que se vai embora?

Não gostei do arrastar na resolução do caso; demasiadas reuniões para o meu gosto...

No princípio pensei que, finalmente, iria dar as cinco estrelas a um livro da série Wallander, mas vou guardá-las para "Um Passo Atrás". Será, que não irei, outra vez, dar um passo atrás...?

Wallander - our favourite Introspective Detective: This book was enjoyable but overly repetitive. I like the way Henning Mankell adds a different dimension to the police investigation genre, and the setting in Sweden makes a change for the usual US / UK locales. The story itself is intelligent and well-constructed, and moves at a goodish medium-pace. One minor irritant is Mankell’s tendency to have the characters sum up the same facts at regular intervals – it seems he assumes that his readers have short memories and he needs to jog them as much as possible. Some jogging is not a bad thing, but his editor needs to snip a little.

Swedish crime fiction authors are hot right now because of Stieg Larrson's "Millenium Trilogy". Henning Mankell, on the other hand, has been around for years, authoring the police procedual Kurt Wallander Series. Wallander is an introspective, self doubting, detective with a rather unsatisfactory personal life. He is also irresistable and very persistent when he is on a case. In addition he has the ability to sometimes intuit things that help solve the crime.

In this book, the sixth in the series, Wallander is pursuing a serial killer. The killer places the victims' bodies so they can be found and is trying to communicate something with their placement. The story goes on with Wallander and his subordinates trying to figure out why these particular people were targeted and what the killer's motivation might be.

There are sub-plots involving Wallander's relationship with his father, his daughter, and his Latvian girlfriend. These serve to help the reader understand Wallander's idiosyncracies.

The descriptions of the characters and the environment make me feel as if I am there in Sweden. Mankell does a masterful job of drawing us into the story so that we don't need a lot of action to stay hooked on the plot.

The ending is not a great surprise, in fact, we know who did it before Wallander does. The way they capture the killer provides most of the surprise. The epilogue ties everything together and leaves the reader well satisfied.

I feel the Kurt Wallander series is the best of the current Swedish police procedural series. I like the emphasis on the teamwork of the police involved.
Each mystery is challenging and the denouement is satisfactory. There's much more thinking and putting together bits and pieces of information than action in this series, which might make it too slowly moving for some.

The Fifth Woman is the sixth book in Mankell's Inspector Wallander series. At this point I feel like we know what to expect (in some instances down to the very words repeated in every novel). Yet, to my mind it's the most accomplished entry, yet.

There are many threads to the plot. Wallander's hopes and loss, mercenarism, the vigilante killer, the question of adequacy of conclusions based on gender and sexuality assumptions – I think they are all very effectively conceived and pursued in at times surprisingly philosophical directions.

Another serial-killer plot is nothing to call home about, but Wallander and his team constantly ask the question whether women really are capable to do certain things. It's silly at times – would women really dash off in their cars like this? – and maybe you would want to think that the answer is obviously yet in all cases. Still, I felt strangely intrigued by this aspect of the investigation. I wonder if things have gotten more diverse or emancipated since the release of the novel.

Mankell again strikes the right balance between progress, stalling, and backtracking. When they come across clues or are given information they follow up on plausible speculations. I always enjoy when crime thrillers attempt to dramatize actual police work. It culminates in the thrilling chase at the very end rounded off on the more personal note in the epilogue.

Έχοντας μία αρνητική πρώτη εντύπωση από το βιβλίο του συγγραφέα "Ο άνθρωπος από το Πεκίνο" αποφάσισα να αναθεωρήσω με ένα δεύτερο, μια και έτυχε να το αποκτήσω σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή.

Βρήκα τον Κουρτ Βαλάντερ άρτι αφιχθέντα από ένα αναζωογονητικό ταξίδι μαζί με τον πατέρα του στη Ρώμη. Εμφανώς ξεκούραστος και με σκέψεις ξεφευγάτες από την εργασιακή καθημερινότητα, φιλοσοφεί για τη σχέση του με τον πατέρα του, έτσι όπως ένας μεσήλικας "σοφός" ανασκοπεί τις αναμνήσεις και τα συναισθήματά του για τους γονείς του, καθώς το ρολόι του χρόνου μετράει αντίστροφα για αυτούς.

Η επιστροφή στη δουλειά τον προσγειώνει πολύ σύντομα στη σκληρή πραγματικότητα : στα περίχωρα του Ύσταντ βρίσκεται ένα πτώμα σε μια αγροικία, καρφωμένο σε καλά ακονισμένους πασσάλους κρυμμένους σε ένα χαντάκι. Ο Βαλάντερ και η ομάδα του ξεκινούν μεθοδικά τις έρευνες καθώς και άλλοι φόνοι έρχονται να προστεθούν σταδιακά, το ίδιο ειδεχθείς και περίεργοι.

Ενδιαφέρουσα πλοκή, παρά τις κάποιες αδυναμίες και ευκολίες, σε μερικά σημεία εκεί προς το τέλος.
Χωρίς να μπω σε λεπτομέρειες και αποκαλύψεις θα σταθώ σε κάποια σημεία που μου άρεσαν στη δομή της ιστορίας.
Ο Βαλάντερ σκιαγραφείται ιδιαίτερα εσωστρεφής και αναλογίζεται πόσο του κόστισε στην προσωπική του ζωή η εργασιομανία του. Κατέστρεψε το γάμο του, προβληματίζει τη νέα του σχέση και ο ίδιος αναρωτιέται πολλές φορές μήπως πρέπει να ρίξει τους ρυθμούς του και να αλλάξει τις συνθήκες της ζωής του. Μια μελαγχολία τον κατακλύζει και αναρωτιέται πόσο του μένει να ζήσει και αν πρέπει να εκμεταλλευτεί αλλιώς τις μέρες που έχει μπροστά του. Αναγνωρίζει ότι η δουλειά τον εξουθενώνει και εξετάζει εναλλακτικά σενάρια πρόωρης συνταξιοδότησης, αλλαγής αντικειμένου (πχ υπηρεσίες φύλαξης και ασφάλειας προσώπων), αγοράς ενός νέου σπιτιού και σκύλου. Προβληματίζεται δηλαδή σοβαρά για το μέλλον του και αυτό σημαίνει ότι είναι στα όρια ψυχικής εξουθένωσης.
Οι θετικές εμπειρίες από το ταξίδι του στη Ρώμη εξανεμίζονται πολύ σύντομα και σε αυτό συμβάλλει και ο ξαφνικός θάνατος του πατέρα του. Ο Μάνκελ συμπληρώνει με πολλά ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία την προσωπικότητα του ήρωα του και καταφέρνει να τον κάνει οικείο στα μάτια του αναγνώστη, ο οποίος, ιδιαίτερα εάν είναι παρεμφερούς ηλικίας, ταυτίζεται με αρκετούς από τους προβληματισμούς του ήρωα.
Ένα άλλο ενδιαφέρον σημείο που θίγετ��ι από τον Μάνκελ είναι η ανάγκη του ήρωα του να πενθήσει το θάνατο του πατέρα του, κάτι που δεν κατορθώνεται και αναβάλλεται μέρα τη μέρα, προσθέτοντας μόχθο στην ψυχή του Βαλάντερ.

Οι σκέψεις του Μάνκελ όμως δεν μένουν στάσιμες γύρω από τον ήρωα του. Περιλαμβάνουν και τον προβληματισμό του για την πορεία της χώρας του. Μιας χώρας που είχαμε συνηθίσει να σκεφτόμαστε ως το πρότυπο της ευημερίας, της οικονομικής άνθησης και των ανοιχτών αντιλήψεων. Η βία κάνει πλέον την εμφάνιση της όλο και συχνότερα, διαβρώνοντας έναν κοινωνικό ιστό ιδιαίτερα περήφανο για όλα όσα είχε καταφέρει να δημιουργήσει.

Η έναρξη της ιστορίας γίνεται με ένα περιστατικό αρχικά ασύνδετο με την μετέπειτα πλοκή. Μία ομάδα 4 καλογριών σκοτώνεται σε ανταλλαγή πυρών σε μία περιοχή της Αφρικής και μαζί με αυτές σκοτώνεται και μία Σουηδή η οποία ήταν μαζί τους κάνοντας περιήγηση στη χώρα. Η προσπάθεια συγκάλυψης της δολοφονίας προκειμένου να αποφευχθούν απώτερες δυσάρεστες πολιτικές εξελίξεις πυροδοτούν τη σειρά των φόνων στη Σουηδία.
Όλα εξηγούνται στο τέλος και ο αναγνώστης συνειδητοποιεί σταδιακά το μέγεθος της σταγόνας που ξεχειλίζει το ποτήρι. Η έννοια της αυτοδικίας έχει μερικούς οπαδούς και ίσως περισσότερους οι οποίοι κρυφά την επικροτούν αλλά ντρέπονται να το ομολογήσουν. Εδώ, η αυτοδικία, ο δολοφόνος με τη μορφή του τιμωρού, βαραίνει στην επίλυση του γρίφου και ο αναγνώστης, ίσως και ο ίδιος ο Μένκελ αναρωτιέται εάν του αξίζει ένα ψήγμα συμπάθειας και ίσως κατανόησης. Αλλά αλίμονο εάν ο καθένας έπαιρνε το νόμο στα χέρια του και μοίραζε αφειδώς δικαιοσύνη έτσι όπως την εννοεί.
Πολλά είπα όμως και μερικώς ακατανόητα για όσους δεν έχουν διαβάσει το βιβλίο.
Σίγουρα το βιβλίο αυτό, το 6ο της σειράς με τον ίδιο ήρωα, ανέστρεψε εντελώς τη γνώμη μου μετά τον "Άνθρωπο από το Πεκίνο" αν και εκείνο το βιβλίο, μπορεί να απέτυχε ως αστυνομικό, έδωσε όμως ενδείξεις για την πολύπλευρη σκέψη και αντίληψη του συγγραφέα.
Πολύ καλή η μετάφραση του Λύο Καλοβυρνά.
Αναρωτήθηκα στην αρχή για το εξώφυλλο, η επιλογή του τρένου μου φάνηκε ακατανόητη αλλά και αυτό απαντάται στο τέλος.

Primera novela que leí de este autor en 2010, luego de empezar a ver la serie de TV. Me gustó mucho, luego ví el capítulo tanto de la adaptación sueca como la inglesa, y volví a disfrutar mucho de la historia. Me propongo leer todos los libros de esta serie, que son unos 10 y muy accesibles (alrededor de 250 páginas cada uno)

In The Fifth Woman, the sixth in the series by Mankell, it begins with 5 women brutally murdered in a remote place in Africa. The 5th woman is a tourist and her death goes unnoticed. A police woman investigates it and notifies her daughter in Sweden. This is the turning point in her life.

A series of brutal murders occurs in and around Ystad and Wallander just back from a vacation in Italy investigates. We see a true battle of intelligence. Wallander follows every clue and waits and looks for a mistake by the killer. The plot generates intrigue and dread. It is interesting how Mankell ties in the different story lines and twists and turns. He develops the characters with the plot and motive with care. Wallander becomes quite real with the authors excellent writing style.

This is a very good series by a very good author and recommended to anyone who enjoys good crime writing.
