It was ok, but I must say that I don't find it particularly easy to read, so it's not pure entertainment, because I have to pay attention all the way trough the book. Moreover, I prefer the first novel to the second, even if there are Odin and Thor in the second one!

Very funny! These are good books to have around if you need some light reading. I knew someone who was depressed from reading too much heavy philosophy in college, so I lent him these books. He was laughing out loud soon after.

Love the books, even enjoyed the TV series, but found this very confusing and difficult to listen to.

This was just about the most random book I have ever read. In short, pretty much exactly like Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy in Four Parts.

I thought the first story, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, was a lot more linear and easy to follow than the the second, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.

They both had some excellent lines, and Adams' trademark humor and witticisms are present in both, but just in terms of reading a story that I could actually follow? Infinitely the first.

I've grown to love Terry Pratchett's (likewise random) style of writing, but even Pratchett seems to focus more on a particular event or series of events. Adams just seems to write out pieces of a novel and piece them together with super glue. I'm not a huge fan, but overall, still glad I read it for the humor, just as I was for the Hitchhiker's series.

Have saw the serial and the movies and read the books individually and as omnibus and different sets, hardback, still in my library, says a lot. Date wrong, just saw it to review.

This omnibus contains the stories Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (DGHDA) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (TLDTTOTS).

I really liked the DGHDA, which I read years before (probably shortly after reading THGTTG), but Dirk's other adventure turned out as quite a disappointment to me. Where the one was truly absurd, the other felt somewhat.. cheap. Absurdity (as all writing) needs proper thougt before being put to paper. TLDTTOTS sometimes seemed to lack it.

Then again, perhaps my taste has grown more critical in these few years, or my expectations were just too high.

DGHDA: 4 stars
TLDTTOTS: 2 stars

I am methodically listening to audiobooks from A-z at my library and this happened to be the first one. To be fair though it was only the audiobook of the Dark Tea Time of the Soul.

It turned out to be exactly what I expected, lots of zany but hilarious non-sensical stuff. Just like all of Douglas Adams books.

Wow, I remember Hitchhiker's Guide being difficult to read, but this was nearly impossible. I only finished it because it was a book club book! The first half is disjointed, confusing, and does not inspire you to care about any of the characters (and there are many). They begin to intersect with each other about halfway through, when the title character is introduced, but things don't improve much. Don't bother unless you're a big Douglas Adams fan!

Part of what makes this book a let down is comparison to hitch hikers guide which was always going to be a tough call. The rest of what makes this book a let down is the terrible plot, characters and writing. The concept is great (and indeed several concepts which I have seen done better elsewhere) and there is the odd flash of Adams comedy genius but it is just to hard to follow. I means it is supposed to be a bit mad but you get to the anticlimactic end of each book and feel like your time has been wasted.

Dirk is a much more mature and intelligent brand of humor. It is seething with world-weary sarcasm, and is definitely worth reading; they're great. but do not expect them to be at all like the show.... in Max Landis' words, you can't adapt Douglas Adams because his brilliance lies in his narration.
