Not too bad but certainly nothing amazing. It’s a shame Adams didn’t flesh this out as originally intended since it was his idea. It could have been pretty incredible like the Hitchhiker series, and kudos to Jones for scratching it out at the last moment to work with the then contemporary video game, but the short production time shows; it ends up being just okay. The part with the sentient bomb was on the right track; however, that ended up being the most redeeming quality of the entire novel.

I had forgotten this was written by Terry Jones and not Douglas Adams. Perhaps that forgetfulness is due to the book being on a bookshelf in the garage behind some other books for over a decade. But having finally gotten to the Dirk Gently duology, I wanted to keep going on a Douglas Adams kick, and it is Douglas Adams related, so there you go. I didn't like it too much, though. It was the coarseness, really, more than the lack of plot or characterization. The forced moments of obscenity and vulgarity simply because they could be put in the book, for no reason I could discern other than this is Terry Jones we're talking about, and he felt the need to prove it was him a few too many times.

I can't picture this as a computer game - perhaps it was very fun (and not just "for its time"), and someday I'd like to play it. This would even make a pretty good movie, especially if one were to cut out all the Terry-Jones-being-Terry-Jones lines/scenes that don't add anything positive to the total work. It definitely has moments of genuine humor and cleverness and Adams-like sci-fi uniqueness, so it's not a total wash. I would have possibly given it three and a half to four stars (such generosity, I know) had not the detracting moments really taken a good deal of the fun and enjoyment out of a rather silly romp. Not a book I need to read again or keep, sadly.

When I learned that this book existed, I was desperate to find a copy. The brainchild of Douglas Adams, as interpreted by Terry Jones of "Monty Python" fame?! Where do I sign my soul away?

I'm very glad I didn't shell out a lot of cash for this book. It showed promise, but read like a chapter book for kids. I would not give this book to any child, though - there's a lot of sexual, R-rated antics, especially as the book gets moving. That's not to say that this is pure rat poison. The book has its funny moments, and because of those, I do not regret reading it. I do, however, regret buying it, since I will never reread it. If you should pick up this book, get it from a library, or borrow it from some poor schmuck like me who saw the names on the cover and went bananas. It's a very short read, not at all taxing on the mind. But don't assume that you're getting the epitome of Humor, because this book is far from it.

This book is like someone tried to right a douglas Adams book but didn't have anything interesting to say with it. The plot was batshit insane, but not in a good way, and the writing was at times very objectifying towards the female characters. This is bad enough, but considering that the author wrote the book naked (which he makes a point of telling you), it begins to feel a little uncomfortable.

Like "And Another Thing..." this is based on the work of Douglas Adams and was created by someone else after his death. It has fewer references to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy than that book did, but I would still only recommend it to fans of the series.

For a humorous book, the thing that really matters is whether it is funny. It is. I laughed out loud once reading this book, and enjoyed at least half of the humor.

The story is mildly entertaining, the aliens quirky, and the silly tech inventive. Some elements of the book reveal that the bulk of the material was written a few decades ago, specifically the gender-related stereotypes of the main human cast. For me, the humorous tone mocking those stereotypes and the transformations that each character experiences over the course of the story are strong enough that I don't mind the use of the stereotypes, but I could understand if a reader put the book down long before it got around to justifying itself.

A founding member of The Monty Python writing a sci fi book for Douglas Adams: what can possibly go right?

I was first gifted this story many, many, many (etc) years ago, as an audiobook. It may well have been my first! I think it was a package of four cassettes, and it was actally read by Terry Jones Hisownself. My wife knows I was/am a big fan of Douglas Adams, and of Monty Python, and this is one of those places where these two things meet. As usual, she was right, and I must have listened to these things eight or nine times over the course of the next year or two. I also looked for the video game, but either it was too expensive for me at the time, or my admittedly rather primitive computers couldn't run it. An opportunity missed, I suppose.

Anywhoo. It's many many years later, and sadly, both Douglas and Terry are gone. But their work endures, and as I was looking for a somewhat less serious read to finish my yearly Goodreads challenge, I remembered that I had this in my queue. So...why not? It was as delightful as I'd recalled from the audiobooks, once you get past the introductory part and all of its obscure alien names (probably based on Welsh?) you'll do just fine. If you remember Mr. Neutron fondly, you'll eat this stuff up, and it's a shame that it never got a chance as a movie script, because it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I probably still have the cassettes somewhere...not sure I would have anything to play them on anymore, but I remember the delight of listening to Terry relate the story of Levonius, The Greatest Mind In The Entire Known Galaxy, and his greatest creation and true love Titania. It's silly escapist stuff, and if you're of a like mind, you'll eat it up.

This is simply good comedic Sci-fi fun, if you are into that sort of thing.

Enjoyable, Terry Jones narrated beautifully. But halfway through I was looking down the tunnel for a light. By the way, I have not yet read Hitchhiker.
