Finally, science fiction with worthwhile and nuanced commentary that isn't overly Hobbesian! And it's wonderfully comedic as well; it's comprised of black humor that doesn't depress me after I have a long reflection of the author's messages! It pokes fun at the world, and keeps me laughing! Thank you, Douglas Adams, for not taking this world too seriously.

I felt the first book and the first part of this book were alright, in the sense that its jokes made me chuckle and I thought now and then, "Well, that's clever." However, what this part of the series led to, to the end of this second book, is just fantastic. I can't discuss it without giving away spoilers, but I lovingly appreciate the intricacy of the plot Adams wrote and how all of the seemingly surreal or absurdist humor ultimately convened into one large, amazing idea or statement about human behavior.

This is now a favorite of mine!

This series is the pinnacle of nonsensical hilarity. They’re such easy books to fall into, perfect for when you want an utterly hilarious, completely absurdly quirky sci-fi.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook as narrated by Martin Freeman. It absolutely heightens the experience, and the production was spot on.

Finally, Douglas Adams pulls me out of my reading funk.

This is not just a book of jokes, it is, but they're *smart* jokes. The book is really full of philosophy, how does language shape a cultures destiny, solipsism, interconnectivity, and the individuals relationship to not just themselves and those around them, but the world. This, however, is all lingering behind the odd and absurdity that is Douglas Adams usual style of writing.

He gets people, man. He gets people.

Solid 8 out of 10

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is a direct continuation of the first book in the series, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". You get to see the continued adventures, of Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent, and you also get to be in the perspective of Zaphod Beeblebrox and learn more about some of the minor characters in the first book such as Marvin the Paranoid Android. You also get to the characters traveling to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, which creates so many complicated paradoxes, it's mind-boggling.

Despite being shorter than the original book in the series, it feels just as long. This book seems to create and present so many more complicated and absurd ideas. For example, "The true ruler of the galaxy," "The cow that serves meat from itself," "The time-traveling elements," "The ship captain that takes multiple year-long baths," "talking elevators with drama," and many more. Along with presenting these complex ideas, the author is able to find the humor in them, and he's able to really make it funny with his well-written dialogue and great characters.

Although I'd argue that this book isn't as phenomenal as the first book, this book is still a piece of art. I loved how far some of these situations went. It's really hard to describe, but there's some really good material in this book. My only criticism is that I felt the first leg went on too long and felt like it dragged on at times. I wasn't huge on Zaphod Beeble as a character, as I felt his self-centeredness was annoying.

Overall though, I felt that this book was massively enjoyable, and I'm definitely considering reading the third book. I thought this book wasn't as good as the first, but it'd probably be really hard to top something as good as the first book. I did have some minor issues, but I thought this book was really good, and I also liked learning about Marvin in this book, (although I definitely feel bad for him). Good book!

The second strike of the prime, not so directive, example of how Sci-Fi, fantasy, humor, philosophy, and criticism can be fused to create an intergalactic road trip.

Reread 2022 with extended review

So much in such a short work
Including time manipulation, end of time, relativity of death and afterlife, monetarization of the end of the universe, human evolution and what may have influenced it, madness resulting from the insight of humankinds´ unimportance concerning the cosmic scale, etc., Adams covers a large range of topics in a small number of pages and mixes it with fabulous character description, dialogues, and weird protagonist premises.

Searching for the hidden meanings
Dissecting satire is no fun, but a difficult and highly subjective endeavor and it seems to me as if Adams has packed even more innuendos about grievances into it than in the first, more light-hearted part of his legendary series. Not dark, but a bit more in the grey area, typical growing a beard style.

Maybe the best part
It´s very difficult to choose the best part of the series, but I would prefer this one because it needs no further explanation and goes directly into different plots and the epic ending gives deep insights into human cultural evolution and lets one ask the question whose weirdo descendants we might be.

Alien 1: "I bet you might not dare to mix your genetic code with those primates because of the non-interference laws and ethical issues."
Alien 2: "Hold my beer."

I´m not quite sure if this is uplifting, pimped natural development, or just something between sexual abuse (or seduction including multiple misuses of bananas before, during, and after) of primates and a serious scientific field study by immortal, godlike alien beings with billion years of technological advance and thereby supremacy. But still enough perversion and substance abuse to have a hairy kinky time.

The rare sequel that fully captures everything the original got right. For my money it's just as witty, just as thoughtful, and just as fun as the first.

5 stars.

Spezzettare, disintegrare,
Che modo assurdo di viaggiare,
Se devo disfarmi per girare in tondo
Preferisco restare sul mio mondo.

The middle part of the world's dullest, longest, unfunniest joke begins as our heroes are separated by...probability? Who cares, really? Fortunately it's a short read so the dullness doesn't have time to escalate into full narcolepsy.
