Maybe, if I had not read the previous three books in the series, I would have enjoyed this book as a nice love story with only a few science fiction elements but I can´t ignore that I read the previous three, so this book was not at all what I expected.
I liked the concept of the story and the idea with the dolphins, but I think it would have been better as a subplot because with this story as a main plot this book was very fast paced in my opinion (even though it is a very short book) and only the last few pages became really exciting. It just wasn´t this funny type of space traveling like the other three books. I liked Fenchurch as a new character but I also missed Zaphod and Trillian and I thought that it was explained very half-hearted what happend to them.  Of course I liked that we saw Marvin again at the end of the book and I found his scene as well funny as kind of touching but nevertheless I hoped for even a bit more intensity for the decease of this character.
Overall this book had again parts which made me smile but through the fact that I felt a bit bored through more than a half of it, I can not really say that I "liked it", so I can give it only 2.5 of 5 stars. I hoped that the fifth one (which is also the last one written by Douglas Adams himself) will come back to the old standard of the series.

This was so differently toned when compared to the previous books, that I was mostly confused for the first third of the book. Not that it's a bad thing that this is a more straight-forward comic romance, but I did miss most of the characters (mainly Marvin, who only shows up for the final funniest/most depressing chapter, where God's Final Message is unraveled).
It's also really tight and feels sometimes rushed (which is consistent with Adams' difficulty of meeting his editor's deadline), but overall still pretty amusing.

'There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler's mind.'

This book is very clever and funny. However, it is a barrage of non-stop jokes. This can become grating after a while, and sometimes you wish for a semblance of plot. The best in the series, perhaps because it takes place primarily on Earth and also involves a love story.

Not what I would have expected! This book is very different from the first three books in the Hitchhiker's Guide series, which I supposed is apt for the fourth book of a trilogy.

I wasn't overly bothered by the fact that everything took place on earth (though the fact that the earth still apparently exists may take a bit of the underlying pathos out of the earlier works). I thought some of it was delightful, and I got a really big kick out of the Rain God, whenever he showed up. The giant robot at the end was also a lot of fun, and I laugh whenever I think of him lying awkwardly on his face on the beach at Bournemouth.

There's a shift in tone, though as well. I didn't like that as much. Adam's books have always been pretty cynical, but it's always been balanced out by the fact that there's an inherent wonder to them as well. The satire works so well because it's set against such a fabulous backdrop. When things stay earthbound, the satire is a bit more hum-drum, and the book as a whole has a bit of a darker feel.

The plots also a bit haphazard - I almost got the sense that Adams just didn't really enjoy writing this one as much. It has it's moments, but I don't think it really stands up to the first three.

“God's Final Message to His Creation:
'We apologize for the inconvenience.”

I enjoyed this entry more than the last one and this is mainly due to having a bit of a different approach to storytelling than just the random shenanigans that Adams likes to focus on. I have seen the book be described as a love story which is partly accurate. A large chunk of the novel is also set back on Earth instead of adventuring around in space which really helped to make the series a bit more fresh again for me. Apart from these structural changes much of the writing and the humor remains the same. Enjoyable enough to read about but a tad forgettable in the long run. While I think this was a good entry I still feel like the series stagnated a bit after the first two books.

Certainly not what I expected from the fourth book.

This is a pretty simple romance story with Arthur returning to Earth (somehow it's still there!) and meeting a girl Fenchurch. There's some pretty fun moments with them talking and Arthur losing her phone number. Then teaching her how to fly! They go off in search of the meaning of life and find out why the dolphins left Earth. It's quite charming.

Apparently Adams wrote this while locked in a hotel room by his editor.
