The prologue completely identified me; I thought this was a new novel and read it anyway, although it is a series of short works. What floored me most was his art critiques; this guy is multi-faceted in ways I hadn't known and, as ever, writes with intelligence and great humor.
Like many short writing anthologies, it's totally hit or miss. The best stuff is in the travel section. There is one excellent poem. There a few good insights in the essays. But a lot of the stuff is totally disposable. And try as you might Tom, you will never get me to like mayo.
When I met her I wanted to protect her, after I got to know her, I wanted her to protect me. Jennifer Jason Leigh's director from Dorothy Parker movie.
It pains me to give this book 4 stars because the writing is absolutely electric and fun and a pulse you can't find in society anymore. God it was so refreshing. Butttt yea there are unfortunate moments of racism, sexism, and the first birth pangs of the "diversity is ruining quality" movement. so. yikes.
very disappointing. mostly old essays on various topics, and music reviews. Feels like overall, he's too busy being clever to actually do much with his subject.
I picked this up from the local library after reading Tom Robbins’ obituary. What a hoot! These short pieces are outrageous, always generating a laugh or at least a smile. My favorites include the two Africa stories and the Kissing story. Mr Robbins wrote with extreme exuberance. Gonzo like. Very entertaining.
Bite-size Tom Robbins. These fascinating stories vary and vary and vary—just like the man himself, and his books. A fun way to dig in to some shorter TR fiction.
Tom Robbins'in bazı dergi ve gazetelere verdiği yazılardan oluşan kitabı.
