Another great read from Dick Francis. This is a traditional whodunit story. A wealthy father, married five times with a total of nine children, mostly grown up, is subject to two murder attempts in quick succession. He asks his most trusted son, one who had previously been estranged from for the last three years to act as body guard as he trusts him more than the others.

It soon becomes clear that the likely assassin was actually a family member, one of his wives, offspring or their spouses.

His son Ian harbours him against threats by immerging him in the world of racing which he falls in lived with. However he is still not safe and a further attempt on his life shows that Ian is also a potential murder target now.

Great characters, well written and exciting with the familiar backdrop of the world of racing, another thoroughly enjoyed read.

Such a great read following a son and his wealthy father at risk of murder by someone close to home. With 14 suspects, each possibly with a reason but equally hard to prove they were driven enough. Keeps you hooked right up until the end. As the second Dick Francis book I've read it's certainly encouraged me to read more of his work!

I've read all the Dick Francis books over the years, starting back in the 80's when I found my first tattered copy in a used bookstore. When Dick passed away last year, I decided it was time to rediscover the pleasure of his stories. I particularly enjoyed this story of family dysfunction and greed. I loved the voice of the protagonist and found the mystery to be satisfying.

A lot of what makes Dick Francis' novels so enjoyable is the interplay between the characters. The stories are almost always cracking too, of course. But here we have a great relationship between the curmudgeonly patriarch and his son that makes a very good read.

I've read this (and most of the other Francis books) about a bazillion times now. They are great comfort reading. It's been long enough since I read this one that I didn't remember whodunnit, though I did remember many of the major plot points.

I very much enjoy this sort of tight, economical, understated British writing, especially when read by outstanding narrators like Tony Britton. I just can't get enough of this style. I recently read Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey, and that gives a similar effect -- I must read more of her books. :-)

More of a character study than a mystery, a study of a large, dysfunctional family on the brink of a collapse. And my favorite Dick Francis novel, hands down. Ian Pembroke is my favorite Francis hero, nothing seems to faze the guy, and I loved his relationship with his father, Malcolm.

Hot Money by Dick Francis is an intriguing read with a bit of a whodunnit feel- with murder, crime & investigation, mystery, suspense, danger, tension, family dynamics, drama, and more.

Dick Francis novels were a familiar fixture in our household when I was growing up, as both my parents loved his books. He was amongst the first ‘adult’ reads that I explored at the time, and over the years I have read everything he’s written. I remember every time my mother read one of his books, she'd tell me about him and how he'd gone from being an RAF pilot to being the Queen Mother's favourite jockey, before retiring to become a journalist/writer.
Since my mother passed away over a year ago, I have been making my way through her book collection, finally. I decided to make reading her entire collection a part of my reading challenge for the next couple of years (she has a HUGE collection), as well as a way to pay tribute to my mum, who was such a voracious reader..... Reading her collection of books has stirred up a lot of memories, mostly of our shared love of reading. I am forever grateful that she passed on her love of reading to me.

3 1/2 stars. This one strays from the usual Francis formula: it’s a Christie-esque whodunit with a big web of suspects. It’s fun although I didn’t love it as much as, say, the books featuring Sid Halley.
