A closed-door enquiry has found Kelly Hughes and his trainer, Dexter Cranfield, guilty of the lowest crime imaginable by a horse racer, throwing a race for money. He’s been framed, his reputation is scarred, he’s been banned from racing, and there’s nowhere to turn for help.
But that doesn’t mean he has to take it. He’s begun his own investigation to uncover the people who ruined his career, and to find out why they want him off the track. But when the enquiry gets too personal, asking the wrong questions might just get him killed.
It was all due to jealousy. The trainer who was set to lose his horses(and whose wife had gone mad) framed Hughes’ trainer.

This is the first Dick Francis novel I’ve read and man o’ man did I like it! It’s one of those exciting moments when you realise you’ve discovered an author that has written a lot of books and so you’ve got lots of good reading to look forward to! Given to me by a friend to take on holidays, I devoured it in about 3 days flat. Strong characters, a simple but enjoyable plot and many twists and turns kept me guessing all the way to the end. A bloody good read and perfect for a beach holiday.

Another nicely turned out Dick Francis thriller. Nice guys may finish last in real life, but in Dick Francis novels his nice guy heroes tend to come out on top.

Kelly Hughes is warned off racing for throwing a race - and he's innocent! Not one to let his career, and his trainer's business, to be unfairly destroyed, Kelly sets off to prove his innocence and to find out who framed him. In this endeavor he gains the support of the trainer's beautiful daughter and a sympathetic member of the Jockey Club elite.

This is a nicely paced book. Things move along, and it's easy to keep track of the characters. There are some nicely realized scenes, such as the Jockey Club ball.

A pleasure to read again, after twenty years or so.

The eighth Dick Francis is on-par with the first seven, though the writing has, if anything, improved over the course of time. I found that the conclusion was not quite as gripping as some of his previous books, and the final race seemed anti-climatic, but ENQUIRY is still suspenseful and tremendously entertaining.
