The best Dick Francis book. Kit Fielding is back and Maynard Allerdeck is still out to get him. Henri Nanterre, a French would-be arms manufacturer, is also after Kit. Danielle is having second thoughts about marrying Kit and is spending time with Litsi, one of Princess Casilia de Brescou's royal relatives. Kit has to fend off two villains, save the de Brescous, and win back the love of his life before someone kills him.

The intrepid jockey saves the day and gets the girl! Probably reading the first book in the series first would have helped as it was referenced several times, but it did not deter this from being a good book.

A good book! It is a mystery novel in which the protagonist is trying hard to catch the murderers of horses, while he faces other personal hurdles in his life. This is a good story describing his journey to solve criminal cases while managing other issues like his fear of losing his fiance's love because of his risky job as a jockey.

I have not read a Dick Francis book that I didn’t like. The story was compelling and the ending a Francis classic!

Another very enjoyable read by Dick Francis. I am definitely a fan of this author and I really like his heroes who are always intelligent and resourceful. However, I was disturbed by the cruel, cold-blooded murders of four beautiful race horses as a means for revenge.

Otherwise, Bolt was my favourite so far although I didn't realise Kit Fielding has his own series.

Another terrific thriller from Dick Francis. I had recently read Break In, fortuitous because this novel builds on the enmity of the Fielding and Allardeck families. Kit Fielding, a jockey, is successful, in love with the niece of a princess, and healthy. Princess Casilia, who owns some of the race horses he rides, and her husband, Roland de Brescou, are threatened by the grown son of Brescou's business partner. The son, Henri Navarre, wants him to cede control of the company so that they can start making guns, plastic ones that are popular with terrorists. De Brescou, elderly and not in good health, waivers, because he does not want his family threatened. His nephew almost dies after a fall from a grandstand, his niece is chased by a mugger in the middle of the night, and Kit's is almost blown up. In addition, four of the Princess's horses are killed. Kit, with the help of Prince Litsi is able to neutralize Navarre, but the real shocker comes at the end when Maynard Allardeck, who hates all the Fieldings (even though his son married one), is discovered to be the killer of the horses. He has done this in revenge since people in high up places have heard about a tape detailing his awful behavior and will keep him from a knighthood. A great read.

One of Francis's best! I've read this book at least three times now and it's still one of my favorites. The heroes, human and equine, are heroic and the villains are villainous. The plot is intricate but plausible and the racing is so meticulously described that you could be in the saddle with Kit. These are all qualities of most of the Francis books. What sets this one apart for me are first, the sheer likability of so many of the characters and, second, the absence of gratuitous torture, which became so common in his last books. Despite murder and mayhem, this is very much a feel-good book.

Champion horses are being shot and Kit Fielding has more on his plate, having to contend with a black market arms dealer as well as an enemy of his family. The book gallops along nicely to the finish line at a brisk enough pace.
