Great story, not so much about racing as of English politics, and well written. Enjoyed this book, the characters, the antagonists, and the resolution. Very satisfying read about a young man who longed to be a jockey, but never would. Ben is caught up in his wealthy, young father's ambition in English politics and on the way is intrigue, attempted murder, and flashy women.

Dick Francis is one of my favorite authors, but this is not among my favorites of his books. This one doesn't have his usual quick pace, and it's one of only a few that I really have to push myself to finish. As an American, it is interesting seeing the British political system (so much better than ours with the strict limits on campaigning and the amount of money that can be spent), but outside of that, this book covers six long years waiting for events to happen.
Not his best, but still so much better than most of what's out there.

I rarely give a 5 star rating but reading this Dick Francis book required that I do so. Unlike my usual like cosy murders this was extremely well written and oddly timely, although written in 1997. It lacked the humor I normally like but had an understated kind which was very satisfying. It should be of special interest, not only to race enthusiasts but even more to political ones.
