Best book I've read this summer. Thought the plot was very clever.

This was a bit different from other Francis' wrok--and written in 1967. It was more of a thriller than his others, and largely set in America. I liked it, although his main character stayed a bit mor emysterious than other heroes. Also, really glad he didn't sleep with the 17-year-old. Francis dealt with the character's experience with depression in a very relaistic way, too.

Dick Francis mysteries are always satisfying, both as a mystery as well as in showing aspects of horse racing culture. This one is a little unusual in that Gene Hawkins, the protagonist, doesn't really ride, although his father was involved in racing. He is a government civil servant, although that description doesn't do justice to the work he does in vetting people, and rooting out spies. After saving the life of a casual acquaintance, he he asked by his boss to locate a missing stallion worth millions. He does, and then is set on the trail of two more missing horses and investigated a conspiracy involving the blood lines of horses and their breeding. As usual, our hero is beaten up more than once, and there are some terrific action scenes. Another unusual aspect is that Hawkins is suffering from major depression and there are many times when he debates about whether to go on with the case or just kill himself. This condition lasts throughout the novel and is very sympathetically done.

The hardest thing to follow on this book, was the main characters struggle with depression and suicidal ideations. It made the story heavier and almost frustrating. I think it was written well, it worked for the character, but it did make everything so heavy, like plodding through thick mud to get to the end.

This was the first Dick Francis book I've listened to, rather than reading in book format. The narrator was excellent in conveying the protagonist (Gene Hawkins, whose regular job seems to be background checking for an international businessman), a man who seems to have serious depression that is only held at bay by action. Forced to take a vacation, he becomes nearly suicidal. Then Hawkins is invited on a boating outing with his boss's family and some friends. It transpires that the friend has lost an expensive stud horse and this is not the first such disappearance. Hawkins takes the case, which takes him (and his boss's daughter who's about 19) to America. All kinds of adventures, both horse-related and romantic, ensue. Classic Dick Francis and certainly recommended.

Always love a book by this author. This one was written in 1967 but I find these timeless. Fairly straightforward story about finding three stallions who disappeared!

Ugh. I'm really pickin' em this summer.
If this had been in print I would never have trudged through it. As it was, I couldn't wait for it to end. I find it hard to believe that it was in the running for an Edgar Award for Best Mystery 1969, but maybe that says something about the competition. Ouch.

Remember when I reviewed For Kicks, and I said it looked like Francis had considered Daniel Roke for a "James Bond with horses" series? Well, here we have a clinically depressed Bond figure, Gene...can't remember don't care, who can't make up his mind whether to kill himself or get over himself. As in all the early Francis books, we have an unattached drifter who is too passive for words. In this case he's a government fixer of sorts whose boss (yet again) decides to give him a tough job to see if he'll "snap out of it, soldier" and get back on the rails--if not for Queen and Country, at least out of sense of duty to the hand that feeds him. But Gene here is no Sid Halley. I found him completely unsympathetic from beginning to end, half-wishing he would top himself and put me out of his misery. I'm not being unkind. I've suffered from depression myself. But I didn't choose to write about it and I wonder why Francis did.

The "American" characters use British vocabulary and turns of phrase ("mad" where an American would say "crazy" is just one mild example) and this was not helped by the audio-book narrator doing a very bad job of remembering who was supposed to use which accent and speech rhythms. It would have been much more bearable if he'd just read it straight, in his own voice; many do. Half the time he sounded bored with the whole thing. I certainly was.

I know that any prolific author will eventually write some real dogs. This is one. Do not despair, if this is your first Francis. When he's on form, it's a rattling good ride. I've never used the word "dull" about a Francis novel before (not even For Kicks), but this one was insipid. All of the real action is crammed into the last couple of chapters. If the girl has any sense at all, she'll change her mind.

Have read all of Dick Francis' books and, particularly with the earlier ones, one thing I particularly liked is that he treated his readers are intelligent people - no need for paragraphs describing things - he just made them happen and put the reader right in the thick of it! All of his books have something to do with horses: the protagonist is an owner, trainer, jockey, writer, pilot, or any number of other race horse related employments. Before he wrote books, Dick Francis was a jockey, and it shows!

Dick Francis died in 2010, but he left us an entire library of Crime Fiction. What is amazing to me about his life is that he was a successful jockey, journalist, and author after quitting school at 16. Blood Sport is the story of an intelligence officer grieving over a lost love who is tasked with finding three missing thorough bred horses. The story is engaging and the characters are multidimensional. His prose is lyrical and his images vivid. I only thought it little darker than it needed to be. Otherwise, this was an excellent Listen.

Gene Hawkins is suffering seriously with depression. He is in the civil service, a fixer, undercover work and his boss, who is real caring, Mr Keeble calls him out on a family day—back from a long-overdue holiday. Mr Keeble has a guest, a horse stud farm breeder, from the US. He has had three of his hourses kidnapped/stolen on route to his farm after purchasing them. Gene Hawkins takes on the job of locating a missing priceless breeding stallions. (The insurance has paid out)
A murderous couple brother and sister from the US and related to the uncle fraudster who needed the horses for breeding as the ones he had were sick or something like that. But unfortunately in a move to California from Kentucky the new farm was right next door to the Uncle Bart, the gangster/fraudster/murderer. So he had arranged for the brother and sister pair to murder the owner as he would most likely recognise the horses at close quarters.
Gene saves the horse owner after been knocked into the canal by a pole of the brother when they get close to save brother/sister and barge, a staged accident. The killer is a dangerous weir that drags Gene and horse owner under it and out the other side. They survive. He also from his profession recognises that the setup of the brother and sister was deliberate.
Gene he gets more action than he bargained for from a group of horse thieves who want to put Hawkins out to pasture--permanently. This happened initially when he tracks the brother and sister down to an outdoors stay place with the last of the stolen horses which he manages to steal back but Gene is recognised by the brother and is knocked out and almost burnt alive in the hut.
He also uses bugs/ listening devices to find out what is going on. He traces the other two horses. But sadly his co help, the insurance recovery agent is killed. Sadly he has a wife and kids. This makes Gene value his life and now he has to overcome from his depression because he has been given his life back.
The stud farm owner's wife out of boredom trys to seduce Gene but he directs her towards finding herself again and doing a business in decorating something like that. Also, the daughter of his boss, Mr Keeble comes and stays with the wife as well. Gene has the hots for the daughter but she is quite young so they agree if she still has a liking for him when she is nineteen well it could be all systems are go.

Gene also carries a Lugerbut for some reason can not put his hand on it when needed.

Was somewhat put off by Gene's constant suicidal thoughts. Thought they may have been less than needed for the plot.
