After watching the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, I was definitely in the mood for a Dick Francis mystery. It is because of my love of Dick Francis that I was even watching those two races in the first place. Kit Fielding is one of my favorite of his characters listed right behind his Sid Halley character. An excellent mystery! On to the second Kit Fielding book "Bolt".

I've always like Dick Francis but never read the two Kit Fielding novels. I enjoyed them, the characters are vivid and I love the detail on racing. The only thing I didn't like was his girlfriend who seemed dim-witted and predictable, couldn't figure out what he saw in her. But anyway....

A mystery where no one is murdered, not even horses ?! Only Dick Francis could have pulled this off and he does it and how!!
Once again Dick Francis comes up with a unique plot, with interesting characters and a Hero to root for.
I don't think I have ever met a gentleman (in real life or in fiction) like any of Francis's Heroes. Kit (Christmas) Fielding has tons of patience, clever, resilient, charming and wins almost every race he rides in!
Along with horse racing, we get to know how media works - print and TV, how TV news are edited and aired. These might be obsolete technology, and may not even be accurate in the 80s, but it was still fun.
I am not giving full 5*, because the way Kit easily gets incriminating evidence against the Villain was a bit far-fetched.

The audible narration by Tony Britton was a treat to listen to.

He has always been my favorite

Dick Francis’s books are beyond compare. If you are interested in horse racing,or even if you aren’t, there are very few writers who can beat him. Some books center around racing and some don’t,either way you are in for a great read. I wish I could go back and read them for the first time again.
