This was one of my first forays into the life of a man who has meant so much to so very many. Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time felt easily digestible to me, an outsider and an utterly ignorant one at that.

Having lived about 500 years after Jesus, we seem to know more concrete information about the life of this prophet, thought by Islamists to be the last prophet, than we do of the Christians' "son of god". He came from Mecca and is the man who brought all of the Arabian nations under one religious umbrella. He was a fighter, who raised a Jihadist army that he turned upon his own hometown, in the name of god of course.

Perhaps that sounded too snarky. I do not intend to belittle the man or his religion. My scorn is for all organized religions. However, I try to set aside my prejudices when reading non-fiction on religious matters or biographies regarding their saintly figures. For instance, some of Muhammad's deeds did not seem entirely honorable in hindsight, but that is hindsight, which is distorted by the distance of time.

Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time is a nice primer, a good first step towards greater knowledge. During these difficult times, when many of us Americans do not readily accept the followers of Islam with open arms, getting to know the history of the people is an important step in realizing our overwhelming similarities as humans, the one and only tribe of man and woman that should truly matter.

Very lovely book , divided to 5 chapters , explaining in a very simple way the history of prophet muhammed PBUH, and how the society in its time was , in order to understand the reasons of some decisions in islamic history . the book is a good source for non Muslims as it is a very lovely add for Muslims , i enjoyed much reading this book , and i enjoyed the simplicity of the tall, as this is my second book for the writer and first one " history of God " was quite complicated and long .

i certainly recommend it for everyone who is interested in Islamic history

بفكر غربي وكاتبة انجليزية كاثوليكية نشأت كراهبة ثم تعمقت في الشرق الأوسط وأديانه وثقافاته وتاريخه، ثم هالتها الصورة النمطية المشوهة لنبي الإسلامي التي تربى عليها الغرب منذ الحروب الصليبية، فوضعت كتاب “حياة محمد” ثم بعد أحداث 11 سبتمبر وضعت كتابها الحالي “محمد نبي لزماننا ، اصدار عام 2008 و213 صفحة ترجمة فاتن الزلباني ، حيث تعرض الكثير من الشواهد الهامة من سيرة النبي محمد بن عبد الله عليه الصلاة والسلام وتتناول أحداثًا مفصلية تنتقي منها الكثير من الأفكار، وقبله محمد سيرة نبي ، والقدس مدينة واحدة عقائد ثلاث وهو الكتاب الوحيد الذي قرء للكاتبة
في الثقافة الغربية تاريخ طويل من الرعب من الإسلام (الإسلاموفوبيا) يرجع لأيام الصليبيين، فقد انتشر في الأوساط المسيحية لأوروبا القرن الثاني عشر، بفعل الرهبان أن محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم كان دجالا فرض دينه على الناس الرافضين بقوة السلاح، وكانوا يسمونه بأبشع الأسماء وينعتونه بأقبح الصفات وأحطها… ومنذ أحداث 11 سبتمبر 2001 والهجوم متواصل عبر أطراف متعددة اعتبرت النبي محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم إرهابيا ومدمنَ حرب، حتى أصبحت هذه الصورة المشوهة صورا نمطية مقبولة لدى الغرب. حيث تعرض الإسلامَ الى مغالطات ، وتجرأ البعض على شخصية نبينا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، ونُعتَه بصفات شنيعة، وبقدر ما كان هناك أصوات ومحاولات من المسلمين لتصحيح الصورة، كان هناك عقول غربية واعية وأصوات وصلت بالفعل إلى البحث عن الحقيقة والتعمق في شخصية نبينا والإسلام، ومنهم كانت الكاتبة كارن أرمسترونغ حيث تنبهت الى خطورة ما يروِّجه الإعلام الغربي عن النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وعن الإسلام فقامت بتأليف كتب عديدة عن الاسلام.
يتكون الكتاب من خمسة فصول مكة – الجاهلية – الهجرة – الجهاد – السلام
1.tمكة المكرمة : هنا قريش حامية الكعبة ، الغنية والقوية بفضل حمايته للكعبة وزاد هذا الاحترام بعد احداث الفيلوهنا بينت الكاتبة كيف كان وضع مكة وقريش والعرب عمومًا والتقاليد السائدة، وأن المروءة كانت أن يكون الفرد مع القبيلة على الخطأ والصواب .
2.t الجاهلية : هنا عبادة الاصنام هبل ومناة حيث فلم تكن الجاهلية جاهلية فكر : اعظم الشعراء ظهروا في تلك الفترة ، انما جاهلية التصرف حيث كان الثار والعنف والحروب “هو العنف المُزمِن في الاعتداء على الآخرين والانتقام منهم نتيجة الغضب السريع والحساسية الزائدة للشرف والمكانة”. لذلك دور الرسول كان محاولة الاصلاح ما استطاع ثم الابتعاد بغار حراء حيث نزل الوحي علي
3.tالهجرة ذكرت أن الإسلام حثَّ على التخلي عن الجاهلية، والتحلي بالصبر والرحمة والإيثار ومساعدة المحتاجين وتحرير العبيد والمناصحة في فعل الخير، والتصرف برفق وطيبة، فالمسلمون مسالمون، واستشهدت بسورة “البلد”. بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ (1) وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
كما ذكرت الكاتبة في الصفحة 90 أن الله لم يكن حكرًا لأحد أو لناموس واحد، وأنه مصدر معرفة وعلم ونور لكل الإنسانية، واستشهدت بسورة النور الآية 35: (اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُوقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ نُورٌ عَلَى نُورٍ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ).
وكذلك الإسلام لم يكن للعرب وحدهم، وأن نبينا إبراهيم كان مسلمًا، وكذلك أبناؤه من بعده، واستشهدت بآيات أيضًا، فالتوحيد لم يكن غريبًا على العالم آنذاك، من خلال الحنفية دين إبراهيم عليه السلام

4.tالجهاد: ذكرت أن الجهاد لم يكن يعني الحرب المقدسة، ولكنه: “بذل الجهد أو الكفاح الضروري لممارسة ما أراده الله من المرء، وعلى المسلمين أن يبذلوا جهدهم في كل المجالات: الثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والروحية والعائلية، طبقًا لما أراده الله منهم، وفي بعض الأحيان سيضطرون للقتال ولكن ليس هذا واجبُهم الرئيسي” ( الصفحة 127 – 128)
وأن القتال فُرِضَ على محمد وعلى أتباعه، وكان لا بد منه في كثير من الأحيان للدفاع عن النفس أو الاقتصاد، فالإسلام ليس دين حرب وقتال ولم يقم على حد السيف قط، وإنما ترك النبي محمد الحرية المطلقة للناس، وعندما فتح مكة لم يكن أبدًا هدفه الحكم السياسي أو تجريد قريش من سيادتها، وإنما كان هدفه تغيير معتقدات الجاهلية، ونشر السلام وبناء مجتمع…
وأن القتال لم يتخذ صبغة دينية إلا بعد اغتيال الخلفاء الراشدين عمر وعثمان وعلي

5.tالسلامختمت كارن بعبارات ذكية ومتفهمة كتابها حيث قالت: “يُصر النقاد الغربيون على رؤية محمد كرجل حرب، ويقتصرون عن رؤية معارضته منذ البداية لروح التكبر والأنانية الجاهلية، التي أسفرت عن العدوان على الآخرين، ليس فقط في عصره، وإنما ما زالت متقمصة بعض قادة الغرب وقادة المسلمين على حد سواء ..

6.tوالان يتحول النبي الذي كان رمزًا للسلام والتراحم إلى رمز للفرقة والنزاع، في تطور ليس فقط مأساويًّا، ولكنه أيضًا خطير على الاستقرار الذي يعتمد عليه مستقبل البشر..”
كما تضيف قائلة: “ما لم تتعلم الحضارة الغربية ثقافيًّا وسياسيًّا واجتماعيًّا واقتصاديًّا، وتتعلم الكنيسة المسيحية، اللاهوتية، أن تعامل الآخرين باحترام، بشكل رئيسي، فسيفشل كل منهما في التوافق مع العصر، ومشاكل ذلك في المسيحية عويصة بقدر ما لمسناه في الإسلام …”

7.tختمت الكاتبة بأنه على المسلمين والغرب أن يتعلموا التسامح وتقدير الآخر، وأن يجعلوا محمدًا صلى الله عليه وسلم نقطة انطلاق لهم، فهو: “رجل مركب يعصى على التصنيف الأيديولوجي، أتى ببعض الأعمالالتي يصعب أو يستحيل علينا أن نقبل بها، لكنه ذو عبقرية أصيلة، وأسس دينا وتقاليد ثقافية، ليس على السيف، ولكن على السلام – كما يعني اسم الدين – وعلى التصالح”.

8.tومن أهم ما ذكرته الكاتبة أن محمدا كشخصية نموذجية له دروس مهمة ليس للمسلمين فحسب ولكن للعالم الغربي أيضا وأن حياته كانت قائمة علي الجهاد الذي لا كلل فيه ضد الطمع والظلم والغطرسة والكبرياء‏.‏ إن كلمة الجهاد للكاتبة لا تعني الجهاد المقدس وإنما تعني الكفاح‏، فلقد كافح محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم كفاحا مريرا لجلب السلام إلي بلاد العرب التي مزقتها الحرب‏، ولقد أدرك محمد والكلام مازال للكاتبة أن بلاد العرب كانت في نقطة تحول وأن الطريقة القديمة في التفكير لن تكفي لارساء قواعد السلام في بلاد العرب‏، لذا حمل على نفسه وعاتقه جهودا خارقة مبدعة لإخراج حل جديد كلي لبلاد العرب‏، وذكرت الكاتبة أيضا‏:‏ أن محمدا كان يمتلك عبقرية عميقة مكنته من إقامة الدين وتأسيس عادات وتقاليد ثقافية لم تستند علي السيف ولكن بنيت على السلام والمصالحة.‏

كتابٌ عظيم...استمتعت جدا بأشياء كثيرة...أولا الكاتبة غير مسلمة فهي تكتب بموضوعية شديدة و تتجرد من الأحكام المسبقة في رحلة بحثها عمن ترى أنه رجل عظيم...هي ترى أن له نصيباً من المشكاة الواحدة...و تقول عن تلك المشكاة فيما تقول :"لا يمكن للنور المقدس أن ينحصر في أي مصباح فردي، بل هو لكل البشر من خلال كل مصابيح الهداية...كان محمد من العائلة الإبراهيمية"

هي تصب اهتمامها على جوانب العظمة في شخصية رسول الله..تلك الطاقة البشرية التي حملت رسالة السماء...و استمرارية تلك الرسالة كان معجزة كذلك..لأنه كان همه الأكبر تغيير عقول و قلوب الناس...

تلك الرسالة هي الأصلح في تغيير الجاهلية و التي ماتزال موجودة حتى الآن..لأن الجاهلية إنما هي حالة عقلية..هي رحلة جهاد...و كما تقول كارين "الجهاد ليس هو الحرب المقدسة، إنما هو بذل الجهد أو الكفاح الضروري لممارسة ما أراده الله من المرء"...

انتقل رسول الله إلى الرفيق الأعلى لكن رسالته ما تزال موجودة فينا..هي الأقدر على حل مشكلات المجتمع...إنه بحق..نبيٌ لزماننا

Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time -by Karen Armstrong.

A short biography about the prophet Mohammad.

Three things i found special about this book:

1. The writer is a non-Muslim religious scholar, which in a way reduces over glorification and being biased in research and narration.

2. She focused on some of today's issues such as women's rights and coexistence.

3. The book is in English, which for me was a bit hard to understand some of the religious terms. But I believe nowadays we have to understand our religion in other languages.

Personally, I haven't read the prophet biography in a while and have forgotten some of its events, thus I was so invested in it as if I was reading a novel.




كتاب جميل مبسط عن سيرة الرسول محمد.

ثلاث أشياء شخصيا لقيتها تميز الكتاب:
1. الكاتبة هي باحثة في الأديان، غير مسلمة، و هذا الشي نوعا ما يخفف من نسبة الغلو و الانحيازية في البحث و الطرح.

2. تركيزها على بعض المواضيع الحساسة حاليا مثل حقوق المرأة و التعايش.

3. الكتاب باللغة الإنجليزية. صح كان في مصطلحات دينية صعبة بالنسبة لي، بس أنا اعتقد انه لازم الواحد يفهم دينه بلغة ثانية في الزمن الحاضر.

أنا شخصيا من زمان ما قرأت سيرة الرسول و كان في أحداث ناسيها، عشان كدا كنت بأقرأ بتشوق زي كأني بأقرأ رواية.

في حدَثين كتبتهم الكاتبة ممكن بعض الرواة المسلمين عندهم رأي ثاني اتجاههم، بس أنت كقارئ مثقف لازم تبحث و تتحرى.

My professor was so excited to have us all read this book because it would open our eyes to how misunderstood Islam was in the public view. My view had always been that there was the bad group who interpreted things violently opposed to the peaceful way they should be, and there was the majority who were peaceful and nonviolent.

Reading this book and learning the history of Muhammad, its no wonder that people misunderstand what he was trying to advocate... I felt like he kept preaching peace and nonviolence and then he went and started robbing a caravan and starting a war.

Who knows, maybe I focused on the wrong parts, but after this book I have a more negative view on Muhammad then I did prior to it.

If he had stuck to what he was preaching- if his actions truly reflected on equality and nonviolence, then I would definitely see how he was misunderstood.

I have been moved, informed and transformed in my estimation of Islam by this amply researched but easily accessible examination of the life and legacy for our times by a figure who has been alternately too glibly maligned and readily exonerated. The contradictions of his character and paradoxes of his society necessitated that kind of transcendence which is required only of great leaders in tragic situations, spiritual or political.

This was a good read for me personally to try and start learning at least something about Islam in general. This was an obviously pro-Muhammed book and painted him in a very positive light, but it contained a lot of useful information about his life and how Islam developed. I'd like to find another source, perhaps more critical, to gain a different perspective; but the book achieved its goal for me, which was to try and somewhat educate myself about a topic that is so pervasive in the news and world events, so that I can perhaps form an opinion and/or speak on the topic, with a more educated perspective. I would recommend this book.

Pushes the "sympathetic biography" envelope way too far

That begins with the subtitle "A Prophet for our Time." That's certainly not an unbiased opinion.

In short, Armstrong goes beyond throwing out the bath water of some Western total besmirching of Muhammad, to throwing out the baby of a critically-based biography of him at all.

While I disagree with people who say this is a whitewash of Muhammad's life, it is selective. Beyond that, when Armstrong does talk about some of the less noble actions of Muhammad, she always tries to put the best spin possible on his actions.

A prime example is of his retreat from his original position of full equality for women in society. The only end view one can take away from Muhammad here is either henpecked husband leading to his first advocating women's equality, or male herd-follower after changing his mind.

Neither view is that of "a prophet for our time."

Armstrong's biography is also strongly biased in its lack of criticality. There's no sense of scholarship in the way of historical-critical wrestling with either the Quran itself or the later hadith about Muhammad.

In short, Armstrong's rehabilitation of Muhammad falls short precisely because it uncritically goes overboard.

I have read or skimmed other of Armstrong's books, and do find a different attitude here, in all the ways mentioned above and more.

It's different enough to have left me wondering if has converted, or is considering it.

Like many well-educated people of my place and time, I learned practically nothing in school about the history of Islam, or even much about the Middle East in general. That made it hard to fully grasp the content of this one book. The Arabian names sounded alike to me, so that it was hard to keep many of the characters separate in my mind, beyond Muhammad, and some of his wives. My understanding of the geography and historical context was also a bit blurry. Fortunately Ms Armstrong knows she is writing for an impaired audience, and repeats her main points over and over. Probably the mainest main point is that the culture of Arabia at the time was one of fierce pride and vengeance, the show of strength, loyalty to one's own blood relatives at the expense of everyone else, and disregard for the poor because they deserved their fate. Muhammad promoted a totally different culture, one of kindness, forgiveness, humility, patience, sharing with the poor, and respect for women. She says that he had many problems in establishing the new ways because the old ways were so deeply ingrained in people, and because there were political realities that caused him to make some concessions in order to prevent the whole Muslim community from being destroyed. I have not read another biography of Muhammad, but this one is pro-Muhammad all the way. Any action of Muhammad that might strike Westerners as inconsistent with his professed values is explained as either accepted practice of the times, or better than the alternatives practiced by his enemies, or necessary because of difficult circumstances. By training, I am cautious about any biography that is too positive. In the passages describing the death of Muhammad, Ms Armstrong writes that Muhammad always insisted that he was not God incarnate, but a mortal man like other mortal men. Therefore he must have had his faults like other men. However, she does convince me that Muhammad's intention was to create a religion based on humane values, that his intention was peaceful coexistence. She also writes that he respected Jews and Christians as fellow People of the Book. And that is a step toward decreasing the fear and hostility that exists on both sides of today's divide.

Karen berhasil menggambarkan Muhammad sebagai manusia pembawa perubahan dengan visi dan karakter yang istimewa, Muhammad mengubah tatanan sosial dan kebiasaan masyarakat jahiliyah arab dengan cara yang belum pernah dilakukan masyarakat arab ketika itu. Dengan membaca buku ini, saya juga menjadi lebih mengenal pribadi Muhammad SAW dan lebih memahami keadaan masyarakat arab saat Muhammad SAW hidup. Meskipun terdapat beberapa cerita yang tidak bisa saya percaya seperti cerita tentang ayat-ayat setan, bagaimana mungkin seseorang yang dijuluki Al-amin sejak belum diangkat menjadi nabi bisa berdusta apalagi tentang wahyu Allah. Tapi secara keseluruhan, buku ini bagus untuk dibaca semua orang yang ingin lebih mengenal Muhammad SAW. Karen sangat mahir bercerita, bahkan saya sempat menangis ketika membaca buku ini seperti pada saat haji Wada' dan saat-saat akhir hidup Nabi.

Had I known this book would be a deliberate apologetic for the liberal, secular, sympathetic perspective of Islam, I wouldn't have bothered to read it. Instead of an historical account of Muhammad featuring the facts, his own words, and the explanations of his closest contemporaries, we get a deliberate message of "Islam is peace" that explains everything away. Armstrong takes Muhammad's actions and gives them her own justifications. So, some decisions are described as based upon eternal, peaceful principles, when a situational understanding might make Muhammad look selfish.

Other decisions are described as purely situational, which makes Muhammad seem conniving and sneaky, but to call those decisions based upon eternal principles would make Muhammad seem violent and vindictive. Of course, both sets of decisions are accompanied by Qur'anic justifications, so neither the faithful Muslim nor the disinterested observer can be satisfied by Armstrong's logical contortions.

After reading both Armstrong's Buddha and now Muhammad, I'm not sure why she has such a high reputation. Her works are clearly slanted toward her agenda for each. The book is clearly well researched, with all most of the endnotes coming from the Quran, Hadiths, Sunnahs and early records of Muhammad's life. That said, I find it hard to believe that you can come to the explanations Armstrong gives without deciding what they will be beforehand, and I find myself still wondering what Muhammad's story really is.
