The Little House Books were the first series of books I read as a young girl. It is a wonderful series for children and adults alike. It is very interesting to read what life was like in the 1880's in the early years of our country. It was interesting to read in my childhood, but even moreso today in a sense. I thought things were so advanced in the years I was a child - but children today have things that I didn't have and of course none of the things in our lifetimes were things that Laura and her family could have even dreamed of. Also, things were done much differently in Laura's lifetime than they were during my childhood or today. There were no large malls, or grocery stores to shop in. There was not modern farm machinery as there is today. There were no automobiles until later in Laura's life. The mode of dress was far different than it is today. I think Laura and her family might be shocked to see the way people dress today. Food was prepared differently. There was no electricity (until later in Laura's life I believe.) There were no microwaves, washer's & dryer's, air conditioners, or modern furnaces as there are today. I think this series of books are those that children today should read. It is a great way to learn about life in the 1880's. It is very informative, but most important these books are fun to read.

OMG This was Amazing! I can't believe that Laura Ignalls was able to live long enough to write all about her young life! And how descriptive it was! It had to be from a journal or else I don't know how she did it! I loved to see how we live and compare it to how they lived. This series was really good. It took me a while to read since I have so many book series to read but it was worth it.

First books I ever read as a girl. Every young girl should read these stories. Classics, that I just reread. I still have the original first version set.

My husband found this collection in a used book store and bought it for me as a Christmas gift. He knew how much I loved these books, and that I had this same collection as a child (my mom gave me this same set when I was 9 or 10). I tore through all of them at record speed, and loved them as much as ever. The day to day life of the Ingalls family, their struggles, and triumphs, brought me back to being a little girl in love with these books. The saddest part however, was, that aside from the first book, Little House in the Big Woods, NONE of them had been read. AS a girl, I read the entire set into shreds, cracked spines, pages falling out, then gone missing. The girl who owned this set, Britney Fonteyn, who was proud enough to scrawl her name across the top of the cardboard bookcase they came in, never came to know the rich, colorful, and sweet stories it held within.

I began reading this series in the 4th grade and I think read the last one during my 6th grade or the summer before. I loved back then to read all kinds of stuff but books about history or rural settings just spoke to me. I think even then I was destined to be forever in love with history. I loved the adventurous nature of Pa and Ma Ingalls, products of a time in history when men and women had the pioneering nature that whether right or wrong was the history of the United States. They lived in a generation when many grew up hearing the stories of how their fathers or grandfathers crossed the ocean looking for a better life. About how brave they were. They wanted that same adventure. They were being tempted by a government offering free land and hearing everyone say just go west to the promised land.

The Little House series is about a portion of the history of the United States and how a young girl witnessed it. Laura Ingalls Wilder has endeared the Ingalls family to many young and old readers alike. Yes they are simple but even as an adult I still enjoy reading them today.

I read this series when I was in fourth grade...so it was many many years ago. However, the story has not left my mind. I absolutely adored these books, and I'm sure I would love them just as much if I re-read them! I remembered feeling as though I was with Laura's family during every journey they went through. It's a fascinating story - and a true one at that. I'd recommend that everyone reads this series at least once in their life!

So these books are classics and some people consider them timeless and a good read for growing up. I thought they were good I made it through half the series and just kind of lost interest, I think the ending becomes predictable by the end of book five (By the Shores of Silver Lake). I have nothing against these books, I learned a lot they're just not my thing anymore. But for those who are thinking about reading them they are really fun and interesting.

I remember when I received this set for Christmas. I had already read one of the books from the library, but to own my very own set was so exciting. I loved these books and I loved the TV show. When my daughter was old enough, she read them. It's amazing how a simple but truthful story of a young girls life can completely enthrall you.

When I travel on book tours, I prefer home hospitality rather than staying in a hotel. Hotels are lonely, they require me to leave at a specific time, and they don’t have kitchens stocked with all sorts of tasty snacks. The homes I stay at typically put me up in a guest bedroom that previously belonged to a child who has since left the nest. Often the child’s books are still there.

On my recent book tour in Florida, I spent the night in my host's daughter's bedroom where I saw Little House on the Prairie on the bookshelf. I loved Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical historical novels when I was young, so I picked it up, started reading, and ended up finishing it. Reading one of my childhood favorites as an adult was so intriguing that I decided to re-read the entire "Little House" series. Amazingly, I think they stand up pretty well 70 years later.

However, I’ve recently learned that Wilder’s stories are a lot more fiction than autobiography, and that there appears to be a political slant behind them. Here are a couple of articles for those of you who want to know more, from  Boston Globe and Slate.com. Now I can't wait to read Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography

By the way, Laura’s older sister Mary apparently went blind from viral meningoencephalitis, not scarlet fever. To learn more see

Read aloud to my children. Classic story, though read with eyes toward bias.

These books are a portal to a time in history long gone, told through the perspective of a child as she grows and experiences her interesting life. I absolutely loved these books growing up and wanted to crawl into the pages and live alongside Laura. They will forever hold a very special place in my heart. <3
