I was anxious and excited to pick up this book to continue the saga.

Still the first of the trilogy, A Woman of Substance, rings true as my favorite of them all.

I did enjoy this one though as well.

I read this and the two proceeding books because i actually bought the fourth book not knowing it was a series. This book is really just ok. It's a little bit predictable and cheesy.

Way too much gliding across floors, way too much sex, way too many perfect people. Barbara Taylor Bradford comes across in her writing as extremely superficial. Skimmed through a LOT of this book. And please stop calling the children retarded...it's so cringey.

3.5 stars A little slow starting but then it gets good. Am going on to the fourth book.

Sometime in the 80s I read A Woman of Substance, and I recall enjoying it a great deal. I think I hadn't read many sweeping sagas like that at the time.
Since then I've read a few more with uneven results. This one seemed to rack up the bad luck with tragedies right, left and center. Paula's ostrich policy for dealing with her cousins leads to what one might expect - surprising for such a savvy business woman who can do no wrong. This being said there's a lot of loud foreshadowing, so much is announced well in advance.
It seems I still have a book in the series on my TBR (which these days means in one of the many packing boxes stored since our move back to France).

I liked the first two better, but I DID like this one. It just wasn't quite as good as the first two.

An engaging story of a strong woman who has to fight to keep her place. You really pull for this likeable character and stay engaged throughout.

The Harte series will forever be one of my favorites. I don't recall exactly the years I read these books (late 80s to early 90s), but unlike some books, the stories are not those I'll forget and wonder, "did I read that book or not?"

Woman of substance was magnificent and the sequel was very good but enough is enough already. I can’t read any more of these books the author should have quit while she was ahead.
