4.5 stars! THIS is what I expect from a Redwall book! The last couple felt a little rudderless, and while they're good books, they really weren't good Redwall books. The hares were toned down a bit, which I appreciated, and this story hit all my favorite highlights from Redwall. The characters were brave, heroic and peaceable. The food featured prominently, and the humor was present as well.

The villain was absolutely fabulous - I loved that not only was evil, but he was an unknown to the creatures of Redwall, which made him all the more terrifying. The only detractor for me was the lack of a quest, and Martin featured just barely, which was a bit disappointing. But I only took off a half star.

I recommend to fans of Redwall, as well of fans of fantasy - this is winner!

Still one of my favorites due to the great storytelling, variety of cultures, & wit. The audio book is excellent.

Ah, Redwall... Taking me right back to my childhood! Rakkety Tam was a fun tale. It's been a few years since I read the previous novel, Loamhedge.

We meet a new sinister antagonist, Gulo the Savage. He's a wolverine, and he's bad. There were parts of the book involving Gulo that shocked me. Let's just say that he and his subordinates don't just kill their enemies, they eat them too. For this reason, the book seemed darker than other Redwall books, but it definitely distinguished just how bad Gulo is. It added a scarier element to the big beast.

Rakkety Tam MacBurl was a very likeable character!

There is so much charm in these books. From the dibbun speech, to the food I wish I could try due to Jacques's descriptions, and just the whole good vs. evil plot, these stories never get old. If you haven't made the journey to Redwall and Mossflower Country, consider this an invitation! Give it a try!

My least favorite in the series so far, although it still has good narrative momentum and some aspects of creative flair (the Walking Stone being among them). 2.5/5 rounded up for two touchdowns' worth of books being pretty damn good before it.

Both the most focused - probably more A-plot than any other book up until now - and the most unfocused of the series. Tam is a real C+/B- protagonist, and none of the secondary/tertiary squad pops like they usually do. Still good enough to be an escapist read; we'll see if this is a blip in a long line of consistent quality, or the place where the series starts to see diminishing returns.

Fun accents to read, but very brutal. Other Redwall books can be read to kids, but not this one.

The accents on the audio book were so hard to understand I didn't follow the story completely. Also I don't think it's wise to jump into the series on book 17 like we tried to do.

Another of my favorites by Brian Jacques. I love this Scottish squirrel duo and their adventures, as well as all the characters they meet along the way. And, of course, the food descriptions are the best part.

Great Redwall story! Added a new element with a non-traditional enemy like Gulo.

I was obsessed with this book (and all the rest of the series) when I was 10. Much less obsessed now. Way more violent than I remembered, and missing some of the cozy Redwall factor that I recall permeating the series. Perhaps it’s a case of not being in the right mood for a book at the time I read it, but it was a struggle to finish. 2.5 stars.
