Redwall books always contain 3 books. Unusually, in The Legend of Luke the middle book is a separate story: the legend of Luke. (Book 1 is travel to hear the story and book 3 is traveling back.) I think the story suffers because of this: the arc of the story is much smaller.

"The young must grow old, Whilst old ones grow older, And cowards will shrink, As the bold grow bolder. Courage may blossom in quiet hearts, For who can tell where bravery starts? Truth is a song, oft lying unsung, Some mother bird, protecting her young, Those who lay down their lives for friends, The echo rolls onward, it seldom ends. Who never turned and ran, but stayed? This is a warrior born, not made! Living in peace, aye many a season, Calm in life and sound in reason, ’Til evil arrives, a wicked horde, Driving a warrior to pick up his sword, The challenger rings then, straight and fair, Justice is with us, beware. Beware!"

“Sometimes friends do go from us—it will happen more and more as you grow up, Chugg. But if you really love your friends, they’re never gone. Somewhere they’re watching over you and they’re always there inside your heart.”

"wondering how one night’s sleep could leave her with such a fine appetite."

“You keep punchin’ Chugga’s tummy an’ I swirt water in you eye, sh’ew!”

"It was also very sad at times, but does not sadness mingle with joy, to make us grow fully into the creatures we are?"

This isn't my favorite Redwall book. I loved seeing Martin and Gnoff again (they're an amazing pair), I find the split storyline kind of hard to follow. Also, the ending goes on unnecessarily long. But at least it's cool to see some background on Luke.
