the good:
-riddles you can kind of follow along with that go all over the abbey! yey
-fooooood. there's a scene in this book in which animals are tasked with providing opinions on cheese and drink pairings. god i wish that was me. also hotroot & watershrimp soup sounds so good. even these animals on a godforsaken ocean voyage eat well
-Clecky and Gerul. they are good.

the meh:
-as I was suggested to do, I did skim all of the enemy-animal sections when they didn't directly involve a "good guy". this helped because yo, those sections are not interesting
-it's kind of weird that this book stuck out to me in my memory when the squad who's doing the riddling basically do not matter to the main thrust of the plot (they are a B plot!! though they're written like an A plot, so that's confusing). kinda disappointing, though having yet another conflict at Redwall would probably be too much
-lol I did notice that Jacques opted to kill off any of the "less bad" corsairs through accidents/other means instead of having to have a judgment on what their future should be like. I see you, Brian Jacques.

anyway it's a Redwall, that's what we're here for.

bye

See Piepie's review.

Don't pay attention to the cover on the paperback, it bears little relationship to the story. Mr. Jacques writes very well! Not simplistic English, but well-written sentences. Several storylines characterize this novel.

But. The characters are either good or evil (you can tell by their names) and there is some growth in a couple of them. Clecky, and the Dibbins became boring, and if Greul tells what his ole mother says one more time . . . The descriptions of the meals had by everyone I finally skipped. Guess it's a YA book.

Amazing book full of adventure and comedy

This is one of my favorite book series and I definitely think that
Brian Jacques has created a truly amazing and wonderful world
to believe in I mean I practically am in mossflower country when I read this.
I definitely think that Mattimeo is my favorite book in the series
But this book was so amazing.

I don't remember this book very well. I first read Redwall books aged 8 in 1993, and continued to read them until I was 15 in 2000, meaning I read the first 13 (and still own them all). But I do remember that this one was my favourite! Something to do with the riddles and the quest for the pearls. I also remember liking the rivalry between the rats and the lizards on the ship. 5 stars for being one of the best childhood books I read.

"I would have enjoyed a story about Grath Longfletch, the main character who is introduced at the beginning of the book and was then promptly forgotten about. I also would have enjoyed a story about Redwallers solving riddles for an important cause instead of Redwallers bumbling into the answers through sheer coincidence and then throwing the prize into the ocean. Everybody was jerks, even the good guys. Why was everybody a jerk? This book could have been a lot better, but it wasn't."

Another adventure with the woodland creatures that's once again split into a treasure hunt around Redwall and an expedition to go and rescue someone. Just as charming as the other books although brings nothing new to the Redwall table.

I can always rely on a Brian Jacques book to provide a good read. I remember this one being one of my favourites from the Redwall series when I was younger and re-reading it has been so enjoyable. Kidnap, theft, adventure, quests and riddles, heartache and heart bursts - what more could you ask for?!

These were never -good- books, but they weren't always so boring. I've never read this one, but switch out a few names, maybe trade an otter here for a badger there, and i've read this exact one.
