Disappointing... definitely not of the same standard as his previous book 'Sarah'.
I struggled to finish this one, I found most of the characters unlikeable and the style very introspective and maudlin; the language & behaviour of the protagonists is very modern, there is little action and I didn't feel much sense of the ancient world.

The second novel in Card’s ‘Women of Genesis’ series, this work was published in 2001 and deals with the marriage of the hitherto somewhat reclusive and withdrawn title character to Isaac, a son of Abraham, and her life thereafter as part of that dominant patriarch’s family. Faith is paramount in her character, but so too are her developing sense of independence and force of character. Taken from the book of Genesis, the bare outlines of her story contained there are fleshed out by Card with additional characters and new situations which do not contradict the parameters of the Biblical version of the story.

As with all of Card’s writing, especially those dealing primarily with a familial setting, the development of both plot and characters is exceptionally well done and consistently engaging.

Recommended.

Not as great as I'd hoped, but I have very high expectations for Card. I enjoyed it, but I thought there could have been more character development and maybe, I don't know, less whining?

Better Bible fanfiction, keeping more so to the written explicit narrative while also humanizing and weaving in more relatable, human themes (in comparison with its predecessor) in such a way that kept much (but not necessarily all) of the original intention and spirit of the story while fleshing out the details and the characters. Stronger sequel and second in series

Card is a good writer. Ender's game is one of my all-time favorite books, but it's only more recently that I've discovered some of Card's other books. This book tells the story of Rebekah and for the most part I enjoyed it. There was one part when Rebekah's mother deceives her father and remarries him and oops, she's not dead after all which I thought was a little much. But for the most part I really enjoyed this story. I like Card's take on it, that life is full of generally good people, who are trying their best to do right, and the best they can. Having read this one, I'm curious on Card's take on the Rachel and Leah story and so I'm considering picking that one up to read as well.

This book made me crazy in the beginning. While I appreciated the inside view of Rebekah's family, and especially her relationship with Deborah, a lot of the dialogue was so vapid. It's hard to stomach "Oh poor pitiful me, why did God curse me with such beauty" for long, and it went on ad nauseum. But once Rebekah went to Abraham's camp and married Isaac, the book was much better. Seeing the interaction between the characters and feeling the turmoil in the camp was eye-opening for my understanding of these Biblical figures. I don't know that I will read any more of the books in the series, but I enjoyed this glimpse of Rebekah.

I really enjoyed this book. I started reading it while in Georgia visiting my SIL and had to hurry and request it from the library when we got back. I'm a sucker for romance and thought that Rebekah and Isaac were so beautifully written. I thought that Card did really well in describing events and the human side of them.

I enjoyed seeing the people in the Bible being fleshed out and reading some of the details of everyday life at the time in which the book is set. Card's depiction of a woman, in first person, seemed authentic (but a woman would probably be a better judge of that).

Far too much introspection. Liked when they were actually doing stuff and I was learning something of their way of life and culture, but quickly became bored when it got agonizey. Also, why is there a white woman on the cover?!

What an absolutely incredible story. It is as if Orson Scott card were actually there living this story. His writing is truly inspired. I read Rachel and Leah years ago, but will probably read it again because this time period is absolutely fascinating to me! The lives these early people lived were absolutely fascinating, and it is very interesting to me to read about. I LOVE how Rebekah is portrayed as a fiercely strong and faithful woman of god who knew from the beginning that she loved and wanted to follow God. 5 stars for sure!!!

Of all the Women of Genesis books, I enjoyed this one the most. I liked the development of Rebekah's character. An inspiring read if you can get past ancient personalities acting in ways more appropriate for modern people.
