There is just something refreshing about this series! The writing style is simple yet not boring. The characters are so real that I sometimes think I could go visit them. And life on the East Side of New York for this Jewish American family in the early 1900s is vivid. I love each of the girls: Ella, Hennie, Sarah, Charlotte, and Gertie, and baby Charlie. So much fun, trouble, and love.

As I read this, I realized I had read it when I was a kid. There are some great stories in here, though I did cringe a couple times at dated phrasing (throwing like a boy versus a girl, the word midget). Other than those flaws, I’d recommend it to the next generation. There’s some very sweet ethical behavior exhibited by the kids when they’re not busy playing.

Another lovely book in the series. I love how traditions are woven into the cycle of the year.

While I ended up reading this family's story out of order it was still warm and wonderful and I loved every word. The characters are delightful and it opened my eyes to the lives of immigrants at the turn of the last century. I am grateful that Sydney Taylor took the time to put pen to paper and record a fictionalized version of the childhood she experienced as in immigrant in New York.

More adventures of Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte, Gertie and baby Charlie. Several chapters include a nurse from the Settlement House named Miss Carey and a young Italian boy named Guido who helps at Papa’s store.
Enjoyable, fast read of life in the first part of the 20th century. Good sense of what life was like at that time.

Dig audio - actually remember several scenes - how many times was this read as a kid?

I didn't realize there was more in the All-of-a-Kind family books. We really love these. Very simple but fun realistic fiction set in the 1900s New York City. The chapters are a good length to read aloud and the illustrations are nice. We all enjoyed them. Boy that Henny is still a trouble maker!

I'm sure I must have read these books as a child - I'm not sure where I picked this one up but I'm glad I did. Such innocence and fun, at the same time educational and informative. The series follows a Jewish family of five girls (and the recent addition of a baby boy) growing up on the Lower East Side of NYC in the early 1900's. The mischief they get into, their adventures around the city, their holidays, their customs, their loving family life. I would happily read - reread? - the rest of this series.

Just as lovely as the first book in the series. I really like that this addresses both lighthearted and heavy subjects in a way that kids will understand. This family is very loving and though they struggle with money, it doesn’t appear that they lack anything. A family full of love is enough for these children.
