This volume continues the story of the Five Little Peppers in their newly prosperous life. If you enjoyed the first book, this and the sequels will continue to charm. If you thought Polly Pepper, her siblings and their Mamsie were too thoroughly good to be true, don't read farther into the series because they just keep on.

Despite the dates attached to the books, the stories seem to go in this order:

The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, 1881

The Adventures of Joel Pepper, 1900

The Five Little Peppers at School, 1903

The Five Little Peppers and their Friends, 1904

The Five Little Peppers Midway, 1890

The Five Little Peppers Abroad, 1902

The Five Little Peppers Grown Up, 1892

The second book of all of the Peppers family's mishaps. The number of children and the adventures they go on is so entertaining while still having some great family values woven throughout. This book changed perspectives from character to character each chapter which helped provide a full picture of all events. It is interesting to see how each one is maturing and I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

More of the same of my review of Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Enjoyable for what it is (I read it, after all) but still quite cloying.

Really enjoyed this follow up. Wasn't quite as good as the first one, but still very engaging. Can't wait to see what happens next with the Peppers.

I really tried hard to finish this, but some books just make it so difficult to like them. This is the second book in the series, supposedly taking place five years after the first. But the characters feel like they haven't aged, especially Phronsie who in many ways still behaves like a four year old. It's almost as if the author forgot that children grow up. And I didn't care for any of the characters, particularly Mr King, who does a thorough job of dominating his African American cook in the first chapter.
I didn't care for the author's writing either. There are abrupt jumps in plot without explanation and other idiosyncrasies that frustrated me. And I know this was written in the Victorian era, but it really annoyed me when the author said crying is weak.
Reading this book in the published order makes me wonder what was going through the author's mind. Obviously she had had her own ideas of what occurred in the intervening years, but she forgot to let the reader in on the secret, and this makes the jump between the books abrupt and somewhat confusing. The author eventually wrote other books to fill in the gap and I suggest that readers interested in this series follow the chronological order rather than publishing order.

The Peppers are living with Dr. King and visit the Little Brown House to see how much they have now to be grateful for. Dr. King's cousin is a crabby old goat who turns around with sorry for all she's done with Phronsie's help. All sorts of excitement happens like a wedding, broken leg, burglars and preparing to travel abroad. This is a fun read and I really enjoyed the second half.

This book came to my library from my childhood bookshelves. I don't know how many times I tried to read it, but could never figure out the characters. Which of the eight kids were the "five little Peppers"? Who was Jasper? Was he another child? A servant? What was his place in the household? How were the other characters related? It was hopelessly confusing to me.

It took all these years for me to figure out that I had the second book in a series and needed to read the first for it to make sense. Fortunately, I easily found the first book (The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew) available to borrow in Kindle format and could then read this book I have had for so long.

And now I can get it off my bookshelves. I read it. It was fine, but nothing spectacular, at least from an adult perspective, even though I am a fan of juvenile literature.

Often, I find the attempts of an author to catch up readers jumping into a series a bit awkward and even annoying. It's interesting that this one series that I tried to start in the middle didn't offer enough review for me to ever sort out the characters despite multiple attempts.

There are more books in the series. I wouldn't mind finding a synopsis of them to see how everything plays out, but probably won't bother to read the actual books.

The second Peppers chronicle tells of their life afresh in the King household. It wasn't quite as near-and-dear as #1 (which I adored, to use Polly's language), but familial nonetheless. There were darker themes in the ending chapters (robbery) so a younger audience may not be the best for this one. This one centered mostly on Polly and Phronsie. I missed the boys' interaction and creativity in this one, as Polly can often be overdramatic and Phronise just a bit too doted on as the pet.

It's the continuing adventure of the five Pepper children, three years from the first book, Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. They are all still living with the Kings-Whitneys and are having the grandest times of their lives. Things, as they are bound to, happen quite a lot, starting with the unfortunate arrival of someone who despises the Peppers. An accident occurs, as well as another burglary (just as in the first book), someone accidentally gets shot. Exciting things aside, the Peppers have many lessons to learn, not just for academics, but for character as well.
Just as the first book, I really enjoyed this one and most, if not all, the characters. Polly's friends are a little bit annoying, Phronsie is sweet as ever, and Ben and Jasper are so nice and responsible and big brother-ish. Really, really love this series.

I read Five Little Peppers and How They Grew as a child/teen, but obviously remembered none of it, as I had a terrible time figuring out who everyone was and how they fit together. By the end, I had it mostly figured out, but not entirely. So reading book one would help, I'm sure. I did not like the beginning of the book, as it opened with a scene that was incredibly disrespectful to a servant. (Which does give insight to that time period, but on the other hand technically Mrs. Pepper was also a servant, and she and her family get treated beautifully. The book didn't in any way take note of this discrepancy. I honestly thought throughout this book that the deceased Mr. Pepper was Mr. King's son and had married Mrs. Pepper against Mr. King's wishes. Apparently I was entirely wrong on that account.)
The first portion of the book was also very slow, with a lot of planning happening. The second half definitely had more happenings, but also felt disjointed in places. There was not a ton of character development. Too be fair, I think there were too many characters to develop.

I love the Five Little Peppers Series...I read it for the first time when I was in elementary school and the way the series was written...the love between the characters, how the plots are developed..are very much like the stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder..another favorite author of mine.
