I’m not a non-fiction reader, but sometimes I go for it, especially if recommended by someone who knows me.
This book has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time and I finally decided to face it.
I’m glad I did. Another one stroked out of my tbr.
This is a remarkable memoir. But it’s not an easy one. Several times I wanted to throw the book against the wall.
Regardless, I was engaged from the beginning.
The writing, although not flawless, is quite good.
Unfortunately the narrative was flat. There was a lack of enthusiasm and emotion.
But the storyline was well developed.
I’m amazed by her survival.
Her parents were absolutely unconventional, negligent and irresponsible.
How can you close your eyes to sexual abuse or treat it as a living experience?
The children’s innocence shown here is priceless, but then, in other occasions they can be so evil and mean against each other.
All that abuse, struggle and poverty was hard to believe and hard to take in, especially because it is not something that I would ever expect to happen in America (except on books).
I was angry most of the time because the author was too soft about her parents.
I just can’t believe how passive the kids were.
I tried to watch the movie adaptation, and Woody Harrelson was the perfect choice to play the father, but I couldn’t finish it because the structure was quite different from the book. I may try watching it again, but I need a break from true facts. I deal better with fiction.
